Going Paper

June 19th, 2011 @ 4:20 pm by Mrs. Cannon

There are tons of paper-flower tutorials out there. I Googled around a bit and also used an Offbeat Bride thread on paper flowers to find a few I liked. My process for picking which flowers to make was pretty much:

  1. Look at paper flowers. Decide if I like how they look when complete, knowing that they will probably not look as good when I do it.
  2. Look at the tutorial. Does this seem like something I can reasonably expect I will be able to do?
  3. Will it require buying a bunch of stuff I don’t already own and will never use again? How expensive is said stuff?
  4. Try making one and see how it turns out.

So far I have made quite a few of these two types of flowers. I might make another type or two as well, depending on how much time I have. I used the tutorials I linked to, but I do have some advice beyond what the tutorials say based on my own experience.

For these guys I didn’t do the distressing or glitter stuff because it’s not my style. I bought this punch from Amazon. I hot-glued pipe cleaners to the bottom so they can be arranged into a bouquet at some point. And I just used a Q-tip with the end cut off to curl the edges.

For the other flowers, I cut out petals for each flower (using one full page for each flower) and asked Mr. Cannon to help with the crumpling step. It gave me one less thing I had to do, and he was more than happy to crumple so he could get involved without having to get too creative. I also left a little space in the middle of each of the flowers to feed the pipe cleaner through to give them stems.

Some blue flowers

I’ll post a finished bouquet when I finally have one—and I might add some more flowers to my repertoire before then. If so, I’ll link up the tutorials and show you how it’s going.

Is anyone else forgoing real flowers?

We decided to forgo real flowers in the candle centerpieces for my bestie’s wedding. We used this tutorial from Martha: http://www.marthastewart.com/photogallery/paper-flowers?lpgStart=1&currentslide=3&currentChapter=1. They came out really well for only about $5 for 10 centerpieces!

Oooh, if we were living in Cbus, I would think about going the non-flowers route, but I don’t want to have to worry about smashing my bouquet during flight so I’m going the easy-real route.

Your flowers look like they’ll be so pretty and fun!

Beautifully done. How long does it take you to do one of the yellow roses? I love how they look!

@Ms. Library: Thanks for the link! I might do some of these- they’re really pretty!
@Miss Funnel Cake: If I was having to travel for the wedding, I’d make it so I had to pack pretty much nothing because I’d be so worried about losing something or destroying it. I don’t know how you guys keep from completely freaking out planning everything from so far away!
@mariewest: I’ve been doing a bunch at one time, and I do each step for all the flowers at once, so I don’t have time for just one. But they are much faster than the other flowers (those take 2 hours for one flower!). I can bust out 20 or so in an hour or so. And they can easily be done assembly line style if you can wrangle a fiance, MOB and some bridesmaids to help out.
@Mrs. Lox: Thanks! I actually think they look way better in person, so I’m hoping when a professional photographs them they look nicer.
@miss.qwerty: Thanks! I can use all the encouragement I can get. I’m definitely to the “burnt out on making flowers” point, so every bit of encouragement to get them done helps a LOT!

I’ve made a ton, and the bouquets and the gm/groom bouts are done, but now the parents want bouts/corsages…. It’s only about 12 more flowers to make but I’ve just been putting it off again and again and again. Maybe tomorrow.

I really like those! I found the tutorial of the rose, but we ultimately decided against them. They were too “pretty” for what we were going for! I love how simple they are… Can’t wait to see a full bouquet!!! :)

Great flowers! They look amazing. I’m another non-real flower bride. I made clay flowers and I love them. They sit on our mantel where I enjoy them everyday.

My fiance and I started in December making paper flowers for our September wedding. We have over 700 now, and 4 different styles. The craziest part is that since we’re using so many different colors and types of paper, it looks more like 700 different types of flowers than 4! Each one is unique and different and I LOVE them. I can’t wait for the big day to arrange them as centerpieces and make my bouquet and family bouts.

We’re not using real flowers either! Yours are coming along nicely, which reminds me that I should get started on ours. :-) I’m heavily leaning towards either crepe paper or fabric ones, but we’ll see.

I decided to go with seashells for almost everything rather than flowers (the exception will probably be my bridal bouquet).

If I had known how expensive and time-consuming it was going to be, I think I would have done either paper flowers or bulk flowers from the Internet. I’m happy with how things are turning out, but dang, it turns out that unless you have some serious beach/crafter fu, seashells and stems and vases and glue and all that good stuff get expensive FAST.

@kimimary: How are storing all your flowers? I’m making crepe paper flowers and our wedding isn’t until September. Any suggestions/ideas?
