Mrs. High Wire, Dallas Age and Occupation: 23, Legal Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Director of Communications Engagement Date: October 9, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Clark Gardens About Me: My loves include yoga, anything spicy, our eccentric cat, our rambunctious dog, and Mr. High Wire, of course! Like the steadiness act of the tightrope walker, this gal is busy balancing life while planning a wedding to the man of her dreams. We’re hosting a laid-back, vintage-inspired, bird themed wedding with heavy doses of love, good eats (did someone say tacos and margaritas?), and endless Texas charm. Mr. High Wire and I are so happy to have you along for the walk across the tight rope.
About Mrs. High Wire

While I write this, we are at 99 day until our wedding! Um, folks, did you hear me right?

Only 99 more days with my current last name, 99 more days of legally being single, and 99 more days of being Mr. High Wire’s fiancée.

But since the post title is alcohol related, I thought we’d dive into the good ole imbibing section of the High Wire wedding.

Our lovely venue allows you to supply your own alcohol. I consider this a really good thing, because we can really tailor our alcohol purchase to what we and our guests enjoy and don’t have to worry about altering any drink packages or struggling to meet any consuming minimums.

I do want to put this out there: I’m not a big drinker. Like, at all. Not even when I was in college. I’ll have a glass of wine now and again or a mimosa at a rare brunch outing, but that is about the extent of my intake.

It isn’t that I have any moral stance against it or wasn’t exposed to any drinking—quite the opposite, actually. I just can’t get over the taste, you guys. Booze tastes yucky to me!

Silly side story: I once waited in the pouring rain (with no umbrella) for TWO HOURS to meet Bethenny Frankel and get her to sign a bottle of her Skinnygirl Margarita…and I didn’t even like the taste.

But, I do know that our friends and family like to celebrate with a good adult beverage now and again, and I am 100% happy to provide it to them on our wedding day. And I also plan to partake in a glass of wine or two on the wedding day since I’ll probably be feeling rather celebratory!

Me after three drinks (i.e., way too many) – Personal photo

Beer is the drink of choice for most of the people in our lives. And I definitely wouldn’t label any of them beer snobs either, especially not Mr. High Wire. (Bud Light is what he drinks when he’s feeling “fancy,” OK?) So, in order to appeal to the masses we’re going to go the easy route and order a few kegs. My only request was that they be hidden behind a cloth-draped table and served by a bartender (i.e., no keg stands—keeping it classy here, people!). Luckily, that was a requirement from our venue, so it worked out perfectly.

Additionally, our caterer is providing a margarita machine to go alongside our tasty dinner menu, and two bartenders to serve drinks throughout the night.

So, here’s where you guys come in, if you’d be so kind as to help me out. We’ve got a few kegs, a margarita machine, and some white wine on the menu (for my low-tolerance-level drinking if I’m feeling excited). Some people will want some mixed drinks, and most likely toward the beginning of the night before they switch to beer. (Liquor before beer, you’re in the clear; beer before liquor, never sicker.)

Google has provided me very little in the alcohol-shopping-list department, and I have no idea how much of everything we need (red and white wine, assorted liquor, mixers, etc.). I also still have pretty much no idea how many guests are actually going to be in attendance, but let’s just say 150 and hope for the best.

How did you decide how much of each type of alcohol to provide at your wedding? Clearly I need a lot of help here.

A local liquor store provided this handy dandy list http://www.joecanals.com/party_planning.html.

At the moment we are sticking with vodka, gin, whisky & rum, with select mixers (OJ, cranberry, tonic, coke, lime juice, etc.). I’m also including on the “drink menu” to be framed at the bar “suggestions” like a “Shirley Temple’s Evil Twin” (AKA - vodka, sprite & grenadine)…

PS - I was SOOO surprised how *little* liquor was needed for our 130ish wedding list & got extra bottle of each… but I had a similar situation at our engagement party and was surprised how beer was number one choice with a signature drink as a number two and wine and other liquor as stragglers…. but I guess if you/the fam know(s) your crowd a bit it could help(?).

if you’re in CA, BevMo lets you return unopened bottles of alcohol. This is a good way to make sure you’ve got enough, and not get stuck with 10 year supply of malibu rum when people don’t drink much.

We looked at about 5 different drink calculators to help with our estimates, then we thought about what our guests prefer to drink and went from there. I would estimate high on the things you prefer to drink so that if you can’t return the extras you won’t be stuck with a bunch of stuff you don’t like. Plus, after a few drinks people will drink whatever you’ve got ;)

You get four pours to a bottle of wine. Most will drink two; budget 2.5/3.0 per head (all guests) and you should have plenty.

We just got married in the first week of June and provided our own alcohol for our wedding of about 165 people.

We had two kegs (of two different types of beer), 15 bottles of red wine, 15 bottles of white wine, and assorted liquors (I think we bought vodka, whiskey, triple sec, gin, rum and tequilla, along with assorted mixers). At the end of the night both kegs were low (but not empty) and half of each type of wine was gone. We had bought two bottles of each type of liquor (the 1 L bottles) and only one bottle of each type was consumed.

Our wedding was an outdoor reception and unfortunately it was 90+ degrees so many of our guests only drank water, but hopefully this gives you an idea. :)

This June’s issue of Brides has an article called “Your Ultimate Guide to the Bar”. I found it very helpful and you should still be able to find the June issue. But quickly!

Well we discovered on the night that our guests weren’t really big drinkers, with a few small exceptions. We have loads of drink to try to get rid of now! :(

We had 110 adults sitting down to dinner, so we got 16 bottles each of white and red wine. We had 8 bottles of red wine left the next day.
Our caterer advised us to cover the main beers here - bud and heineken - bulmers, (alco cider) and vodka, gin, whiskey, with the emphasis on vodka. He suggested 12 LITRES of vodka. I about keeled over, and just couldn’t bring myself to buy 12 bloody litres! I bought 8 in the end, and we only used 4.5.

I really think the best thing you can do is buy at places you can return unopened bottles to, even if it ends up a little more pricey than somewhere else - at least you won’t have a spare room half full of drink 6 weeks after your wedding!

I’m glad you posted this because I’m going to be in the same boat! My mom was thrilled our venue also allows to bring our own alcohol, because the cost of alcohol per person (especially when half the guests wouldn’t even be drinking) is ridic. I was thinking of coming up with a signature cocktail that would match my wedding colors. that way it’d be easy to just buy most of the stuff that goes into that and then just having some other simple sodas & liquor so people can have a simple vodka & sprite, or whatever. I also love the idea of the margarita machine!

Unfortunately I have no advice because we went with the bar package our venue offered, but wanted to say that a margarita machine sounds AWESOME. Yum!

Well, its not surprising if you did not drink much in your earlier days, you will not like the taste now. You do not need to freak out if you don’t like the taste; you are not a freak or anything. It’s just that your tastes are different from most alcohol-drinking people. You can always fall back on a delicious mocktail and enjoy it as much as others enjoy their drinks! Btw, happy married life!
