Texas Twosome: Cake

June 20th, 2011 @ 2:14 pm by Mrs. Plaid

As y’all might recall, I decided from the very start that I would be making my own wedding cake. I’ve been dreading writing this post ever since. Unfortunately, our cake did not turn out the way I’d hoped.

I think I just over thought the design and didn’t anticipate how muggy it would be in late October in Texas outside. Don’t get me wrong, it tasted delicious. However, the actual look of the cake left a little to be desired. It started melting. I was going for simple and sparkly. Instead I got drippy and sticky. And sadly, I’ve been beating myself up over this ever since our wedding day. I kept seeing the wedding as my one opportunity to prove to my family and friends that I could succeed as a cake designer. Unfortunately, in my eyes I failed.

But since I promised y’all cake, here’s the cake!

I did, however, love how the groom’s cake turned out. Brains!!!

On the actual day, I knew it was melting, even before I walked down the aisle but I just had to put it out of my mind and tried not to dwell on it the rest of the night. And like I said, at least the cakes tasted yummy!

Poor zombie—the guests ate all his brains before he got a chance to gobble them up. Up next, it was time to get down and boogie!

OMG you have no idea how excited I was to see this post! I am using the very same cake topper (entirely differnt theme, but same topper)!! I haven’t, to date, seen a cake use that particular topper.

It looks gorgeous though. I think you are being hard on yourself, I wouldn’t have known if you didn’t say anything.

we all have to start somewhere right? i think your cake looks lovely and you could totally succeed in the cake business - practice makes perfect. I love your cake topper - i chose it as well but it ended up not fitting my theme so now it sits on my bedside table :)

I agree with everyone above - your cake looked so pretty, and fresh and delicious - I know it’s hard to see something you made yourself with objective eyes, but I promise, if I was a guest at your wedding, i’d be oooh’ing and ahhh’ing over both it and the groom’s cake. Great job!

You guys are super sweet. Thanks! The wedding cake was funfetti with vanilla french buttercream and the groom’s cake was chocolate cake with chocolate french buttercream and fondant.

Also love your cake topper. :) I’m sorry your cake didn’t turn out like you’d envisioned. It kind of annoyed me when people told me my obviously effed up cake looked as good as my inspiration/they couldn’t tell it should have looked different, so hopefully that means you’ll know I REALLY MEAN IT when I say that I wouldn’t have known your cake didn’t come out how you wanted it if you didn’t say so, since I say it at the risk of being kind of annoying. ;) I think it looked great. And the brain cake is hilarious!

I love the idea of your cake, esp the lemons as design, never seen that before! I’m sorry you were disappointed with how it turned out but I think it’s lovely!

I think it turned out very lovely. What are the flavors? It held up very well considering this heat wave we are having in Texas. I say continue on with your dream of designing cakes. This is one of millions to come. Besides give me a ugly cake that taste good anyday because I have had some disgusting tasting beautiful cakes.

I think the cake looks good! Don’t let it discourage you from cake designing! Take it as a lesson, if you’re still not happy with it.

The brains cake is awesome, btw. :)

Your cake looks absolutely beautiful! I made a friend’s wedding dress a few years before and I spent the day criticizing the hem or the darts or the cut. I knew then that I wouldn’t be able to make my own dress. No matter how many people came up to tell me how beautiful the dress was, all I could see were the flaws. Remember, we’re our worst critic. It really does look beautiful. I love the contrast with the fruit.
