Mrs. Marmalade's Picture
Mrs. Marmalade, Norwalk, CT/Raleigh, NC Age and Occupation: 27, Administrative Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Army Officer Engagement Date: December 31, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2011 Venue: Old Cadet Chapel/Highlands Country Club About Me: I'm a Tri-State area "lady," through and through. A big chunk of my life has been split between NYC and Connecticut, and I'm finally heading down south to live with Mr. Marmalade. Our long distance relationship has been one adventure after the next, we've spent time in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia, thanks to his military career. Next to Mr. Marmalade, my loves include live music, useless trivia, shoes, design, and my crazy half-tiger kitty, Oliver. I have a passion for food and wine, and I've been known to travel long distances to get my hands on the best meals. I come from a tight-knit big fat Greek Ecuadorian family---we're loud, we talk with our hands, and we spend hours talking loudly with our hands over large meals. I'm going to miss them so much as I pack up and begin my life, far away from home. But with Mr. Marmalade by my side, I'm ready to take on whatever may come. Next up: our wedding!

Can We Register for a Lomo?

June 20th, 2011 @ 10:46 am by Mrs. Marmalade

Because I really want one.

No? How about a pony?

I’ve always wanted one of those, too. At least more than I’ve wanted serving dishes and salad bowls and such.

A couple weeks back my mom asked me where we planned to register, and I told her I wasn’t sure but I didn’t only want stuff for the house. Bewildered, she stopped and asked me if I were crazy. Then without skipping a beat she asked me what color towels we wanted. My mind went blank. White? Yes, white. “Mom, we’d like white towels.” Of course she thought that was a bad idea, too, but I recovered quickly with, “Um…blue. We’d like blue towels?” Satisfied with that answer, she left me alone. Hopefully Mr. Marmalade will like the non-white towels.

I know that registries serve a purpose and maybe I’m saying this a little prematurely. But why can’t we register for things we want? Not just items for the home. I’ve heard of sites like Honeyfund that allow you to register to help pay for your honeymoon. Or the Alternative Gift Registry, where you can “register” for non-material items or ask your friends to donate to your favorite charity. Those sound like wonderful alternatives!

I’m not saying that we won’t register for our own KitchenAid Stand Mixer, because I’m sure we will. But why do our registries have to be so traditional even when our weddings or even our relationships aren’t? It just doesn’t make sense to me. I’m sure we’d be thrilled with whatever we recieve for our wedding, if people decide to get us anything. But if we’re supposed to take the time and create of list of things we “want” for our house, doesn’t it stand to reason that we should be able to register for things we want for ourselves without running the risk of being called tacky?

Before I go, here’s some food for thought:

Come on. That’s a badass wedding present.

Did you register for for nontraditional gifts? If you did, how was the idea received by your friends and family?

Register at Target or somewhere they also carry items that aren’t just for the kitchen or bathroom. You could register for a blue ray player, in-line skates, a fire pit for the yard or whatever you want! I’ve found that most people just want to get something that is for both of you and something you’ll actually use.

I totally think you should register for all of those things, especially the pony :)
I love non-traditional registries, you really get to see a couple’s interests and get them something you know they will appreciate.

SO wants to register at Cabelas.

I say register for whatever you want. Your guests are going to understand your personality and that you would totally use those bikes as a couples activity and appreciate them better than a punch bowl.

I registered for a Lomo at B&H Photo ! And, we got it! I can’t wait to take it on the honeymoon :).

We got museum and opera memberships, movie theater gift card, and someone bought us the cutest octopus stuffed animal. I say go for all the non-traditional gifts you can!

Okay, maybe not the pony. :)

We registered at REI and Amazon.com, in addition to Bed Bath & Beyond and Macy’s, as my mother wanted. She told me no one would buy something off Amazon or from REI, but the first gift we’ve received was from Amazon; and a lot of our friends LOVE that we’re registered at REI.

Also, with an Amazon registry, you can install this toolbar and register for things from anywhere online. We didn’t do that (it might have been dangerous for me) but I love the idea!

We registered with Honeyfund, which was a new thing for our friends and family. We were worried about what people would think, but it worked really well (no one complained to our faces, anyway). Pretty much everything was bought off the Honeyfund, and it got much more action than the items from our “traditional” Sears registry.

Since our wedding, we’ve been invited to three weddings of people who were guests at ours, and they’ve all had Honeyfund registries too!

I think the key was having a traditional registry/items in addition to the Honeyfund.

Check out amazons “universal registry” option. It let’s you register for things from a million diff websites (incl the traditional) and has it all conveniently located in one location! It’s amazing. My cousin-in-law registered for so many random thing- including Museum passes and such!!!!

We registered in two places - Bed, Bath and Beyond (for more traditional items) and Amazon. Amazon lets you add items from other websites as “Universal Registry Items”- we registered for a Samovar like this one: http://www.ekaterinas.com/Detail.bok?no=1209 and got it! :)
We also put donations to 3 different charities on our Amazon registry and people donated! We also mentioned on our website that people could donate if they feel like it. We went and did some research on which charities are better than others and gave a choice of 3 we thought were good (and also had meaningful to us causes - like Dana Farber, since both my parents died of cancer and my MIL was going through chemo when we got engaged). I think people actually liked the charity option a lot.

I think its a different day and age and considering most people live together before they get married, they already have most household items. As a guest I enjoy giving people something they will really use whether it be a camera, a bike or money. Never done the donation before, but I think its an excellent idea.

We registered for a little grill, and fire pit. We wanted to register at REI but there was all of 2 things we wanted, so we decided that with any money we get we can just buy them.

I love seeing non-traditional registries that speak to the couple’s interests! Our good friends had various board games on theirs because they often host game nights; it was so fun seeing them in use after their wedding. :)

We are registering for a raft through a local company! I’m curious to see how its received…I anticipate friends will contribute towards that more than family. Good luck!

Thanks for the link to Honeyfund…we’re definitely going this route. We need NOTHING for the house.

I have to second everyone who’s mentioning Amazon. One of my friends who lives far away got married last year, and they registered on Amazon using the universal wish list button. It was amazing. I loved the range of what I could get them–they’re really nerdy, and I could have gotten them anything from dishware to a new gaming console if I’d been so inclined. I will definitely be registering there. One registry, keeps it simple, it’s relatively easy to keep track of and update, and you can register for almost anything under the sun.

And yeah, I don’t know what I’d do with new dishes. We’re at an economic point in our lives where we live in a smaller apartment than we used to (moving into a big city for grad school does that)–so we don’t have enough space for our own stuff, let alone more stuff.

We still have old, mistmatched, university house stuff… so we need new house stuff bad! However, I’m going on a Disney honeymoon (cruise and Disney World) and my travel agent sent me info to register for it. It doesn’t pay for the actual trip, but people can buy a spa treatment, parasailing for two in the Bahamas, a fancy adults only dinner, bottles of wine, etc so of COURSE I registered. When I told my mom though she flipped her lid and says that she will NOT let me tell people about it because it is soooo horribly tacky. I think I’m just going to secretly tell people anyways hehe

I say go for it! We are another couple that registered on Amazon.com, and we’ve gotten more than a few chuckles at the fact that we have Donkey Kong on our registry :) But people love buying gifts that are more fun than a few forks. Our new hammock from our registry is probably one of our favorite gifts!

I like the idea of non-traditional registries. Like you said, if people are willing to accept (and want you to!) you making a list of presents you want them to get you, why not list the things you actually want?
On the other hand, I think I have some relatives who would freak out a little bit about things like honeymoon registeries, so maybe make sure you have some more traditional stores/items in the mix so that people who really want to get you towels can get those.
