Miss Sweet Cream, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Public Relations Account Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Outside Sales Engagement Date: July 4, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church / Rosebank Winery About Me: Born in the ‘burbs of Philly, it took some time living in the Big Apple to realize that I’m a girl who likes her roots. That’s why the mister and I bought a 1950s house on a charming street not too far from our childhood stompin’ grounds. This could also be the reason why our hometown is the scene where we are planning our super sweet, totally charming, BBQ-for-supper wedding that I never knew I always wanted. I DIE over DIY projects and live for vintage, heartfelt inspiration. I obsess over all things mid-century (from forks to furniture). Love is… cartoons and flea markets, and I am known to whip up a mean banana cream pie. I met the Mr. in grade school and after that boy took me for a spin on the handle bars of his BMX, I knew that things would never be the same again. Besides lovin’ my Mr., I also love to plan, sew and create, and that’s just what I’m doing as I navigate through the details, creating a laid-back day that oozes charm; one that will go down in (at least our) history as the Best. Day. Of all time.
About Miss Sweet Cream

Of course a little post-wedding vacay seems like a good idea after all the work that is done preparing for the walk down the aisle…but I was dying to know who thought of this marvelous idea of a brand new couple getting whisked away to a locale, whether local or exotic, near or far…

For bees who were even a slight bit curious, let me share.

It turns out that there are a couple different stories circulating about how the honeymoon came to be.

Some say that back in the day in Europe, for a month’s time, the newly married couple would drink a little vino, known as mead, made from fermented honey. Some even say that this would help with fertility…I guess honey used to be thought of like that. Who knew?

Later, grooms used to capture—yes, you read that right—their brides for a period of one month and take them into hiding. Even though the groom assured the family she’d be OK, sometimes her friends and fam would go out looking for her to bring home. It was the husband’s hope that within one month’s time his bride would be knocked up before the bride’s family found them.

The honeymoon didn’t even start to be romantic in any way—so they say—until the 1500s.

Go figure! You are welcome for the mini-session, and if that ever comes up on Jeopardy you are totally set.

Well, thanks to some honey wine and captured girls, we get to party it up with our new hubbies or wives in someplace tropical, or someplace romantic, or just someplace where you can be together.

Mr. Sweet Cream and I started thinking about the honeymoon kind of early on. With a wedding in October and a strong desire to get away right away, we were limited in our options. For all you fall brides out there who don’t wanna be rocked like a hurricane, here is a shortened, edited version of what we came up with:

  • Hawaii
  • One of the ABC Islands
  • Mexico
  • Spain
  • Italy
  • Barbados
  • Jamaica
  • St. Lucia

Mr. Sweets wants something “tropical.” “Cultural experience” wasn’t high on the list. Neither was cool or cold temperatures. Don’t get me wrong—we are dying to go to Antarctica one day. We also have Europe high on our bucket list.

But with a wedding being planned, it would be impossible for us to plan that kind of trip. But we did know we wanted to fly somewhere.

So we crossed off some choices, and due to cost, flight times, and hurricanes, we narrowed it down to two. We wound up picking our location…but just let me share with you where we aren’t going.

Mexico!

Specifically, Cabo San Lucas.

They had it all: sun, sand, dolphins, snorkeling, tequila tasting, race tracks, horseback riding on the beach, glass blowing, Cactus ATV tours, and a place called “Lover’s Beach.”

Mr. Sweet Cream! Tell me why we aren’t going to Cabo again?

Oh yeah, because he wanted something even more tropical. As if Cabo weren’t tropical enough, silly man! The honeymoon that could have been. Sigh.

Don’t worry. Mr. Sweets did promise me we’d go one day…just not for the ’moon.

Did your potential honeymoon locales get narrowed down because of the time of year? Are you doing something tropical? Cultural?  Local? Did you cross off a destination on your honeymoon list that could have been amazing?

Hi from another fall bride! OMG finding a honeymoon location was not easy! We are getting married in October right in the midst of Hurricane season. From your list we weren’t even comfortable with the St. Lucia, Bahamas and Jamaica options due to the fact that they are still in the hurricane zone and do occasionally get hit. Not a risk we were willing to take! For us it was either Mexico (Pacific Side) or Hawaii. It turned out to be an easy choice since we only have a week off, Hawaii was much too far for us to go. We will be going to Puerto Vallarta for our honeymoon and can’t wait! Curious to see what you decided on!

My SIL went to cabo on their honeymoon and loved it! my brother has also been and loved it! i really would love to go but i’m with your hubby on this one, even though its beautiful and tropical its more cliffs and rocks than white sandy beaches and the water is a much deeper blue then that of the carribean. still beautiful though as far as i can tell - i’ve only seen pictures.

we were def influenced by the time of year - February - we needed to go somewhere pretty far south to get the temperatures we wanted, we had gone to the bahamas a year before in march and though it was nice it got chilly in the afternoons. So we settled on Negril, Jamaica - perfect weather all week long and the resort was amazing - best vacation i have been on yet.

great post, Sweet Cream. We are also getting married in October, but FMIL is planning our honeymoon as a surprise. I am so excited to find out where we will be going! But we won’t know until the wedding day or maybe the day before. We gave her 10 “criteria” and then we are supposed to pack to those criteria. She has awesome taste so I cannot wait! :)

I wouldn’t mind the mead and the month of travel, but the idea of being captured for the honeymoon is kind of frightening. We had to cross a lot of locations off due to the time of year and brevity of our time off, but hopefully we’ll still find something fabulous. Can’t wait to see what you and Sweets chose!

We thought about Europe - like Italy or Paris! It would’ve made things fairly easy too, because I have family in Europe, so we could’ve gone to celebrate with them and then head to our honeymoon. But then I think we both decided we don’t want a cultural experience for the honeymoon, no matter how badly I want to travel Europe one day! Then my fiance suggested a cruise. But I just don’t see that as very intimate. I see myself on an island also. Maybe in a hut on the water, so I can walk out my backdoor and see nothing but endless blue water. Oh my gosh I canNOT wait until my honeymoon!

Another October bride here! We also wrestled with the same things - we wanted warm temps and lots of sun, but European areas (Italy, South of France, etc.) are somewhat cool that time of year, and we didn’t want to be square in the middle of a hurricane path, either. So we’re looking at Barbados! I think it looks beautiful. As a matter of fact, I think we’re going to try and book our trip tonight!

Mr. Tartlet loooooooves tropical destinations! We decided on a cultural/food-centric honeymoon, though. Looking forward to seeing what you two chose!
