Mrs. Cannon, Toledo, OH Age and Occupation: 27, Financial Analyst Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Assembler Engagement Date: February 28, 2011 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Epworth UMC & Ward Pavilion About Me: I'm the curious combination of being a go-with-the-flow, laid back, obsessive planner. I try desperately to stay as busy as possible at all times (and am succeeding big time right now!) My biggest loves in life are Law & Order: SVU, Community (the show, not the concept, although I like that, too), ice cream, white cheddar popcorn, beer, hiking, knitting, decorating, writing, being outside, spending time with friends and family and musical theater. Mr. Cannon is pretty sweet, too. We've had a lot of fun traveling and having adventures all over the country, but have finally moved back near our hometown to settle down. We're planning a low-key, colorful, fun wedding and an awesome-to-the-max reception.

Dressing Myself

June 21st, 2011 @ 4:08 pm by Mrs. Cannon

One huge, unavoidable aspect of weddings is the dress. It’s not even A dress—it’s THE dress. I have had a pretty clear picture in my mind of what I want for years. I used to be a bookseller and I did a lot of magazine perusing on my lunch breaks. After working my way through the tabloid trash, weekly “news” magazines, “health” mags, and feminist, craft, political, and snooty business monthlies, I would pick up the bridal magazines. At some point during my bridal-magazine-browsing days, I came across an ad for Melissa Sweet. The model was wearing a short dress, and I fell in love. But after doing some pricing research, I quickly fell out of love. Melissa Sweet will never be in my budget. Oh well. I still adore the idea of a short dress.

Once we picked a wedding date, I started an inspiration folder on my desktop to save images for the wedding. (My lazy version of an inspiration board, I guess.) I started to notice that all the dresses I had saved were overwhelmingly

  • short
  • ’50s style
  • with crinoline or taffeta
  • simple

In fact, they were so simple I began to think, “Man, I could make these myself!” Once I got that idea in my head, it would not leave. Now, I’m not a a super seamstress, and I’ve barely sewn at all in the last few years. So I knew I would have to get some assistance. Cue my grandma!

I emailed Grandma to see if she would be interested in helping me. (Yes, email—my grandma prides herself on being a modern grandma.) I let her know it was totally cool if she didn’t want to help—it’s a lot to ask of anyone, let alone someone who lives over two hours away from me. If she said no, I would probably have called Bombshell to see if she would help. (Bombshell was on the fashion board for 4-H and is a pretty awesome seamstress herself.) If Bombshell said no, I would probably have given up on the whole sewing-it-myself idea, because I just don’t have that much faith in my sewing ability. But luckily it didn’t come to that because Grandma said yes! She also pointed out that we don’t have much time so we really need to get going.

So, I’m looking through patterns and trying to get everything together. We’re planning on working on it and at least getting a muslin together this weekend so we can get an idea of fit. (That basically means making a practice dress out of cheap fabric to see how it will work before using the good stuff.) I have to say I’m super excited about this. Not only do I get to avoid the high-pressure sales floor and pushy attendants, but I don’t have to face down a tag with a number that will make me frown. On top of that, I’ll get to spend some extra time with my grandma creating a one-of-a-kind dress.

Also, as a fun side story, I used to go down to my grandma’s house for a week every summer and she would help me sew my own outfits. One of the most memorable outfits I created included awesome rainbow shorts—and now they seem almost prophetic! Who would’ve guessed the girl with the rainbow shorts would someday have a rainbow wedding?

I can’t wait to see what you come up with! I can sew a mean button but beyond that forget it.

@Miss Macarons: Ha, since I wrote this it has turned into “My grandma is sewing me a dress” much more than she is helping me sew a dress. I have done no sewing.

I also LOVE the short, vintage-inspired dress look. I got my dress from a small bridal shop in NYC called Lovely. They carry this awesome designer Elizabeth Dye who operates out of Portland. You can find her here: http://www.theenglishdept.com/. She sells some of her dresses on Etsy too.

This is so cool! I can’t wait to hear how it turns out! You’ll not only get to design it yourself — but love/cherish it so much more b/c it’s made with grandma’s blood, sweat & tears!! Verrrry cool, Cannon! Verry cool!

I’ve sewn in the past; cheer skirts, little baby dresses, but would be terrified to take on such a big project! Yay for sewing grandmas!

My grandmother made my prom dress. I still have wonderful memories of shopping for patterns, fabrics, fittings and the beautiful finished product. Unfortunately she didn’t live to see me get married. Cherish every moment of this time with your grandmother. I can’t wait to see the dress!

I made my dress! My aunt gave me her dress to adapt and I loved the way it turned out. It is so special to have family be a part of your wedding in that way :)

Omg yay! I want to sew my own 50’s inspired short dress with a poofy skirt! I may do a corset like Mrs. Poodle did, but basically the same idea right??

You should check out the dress that Mrs. Perfume made it was stunning. I was going to order it for my wedding reception dress, but alas, that is another story. She or her mom has an etsy shop now and she sells that dress, maybe she can give you some pointers.

I’m making my dress too! I haven’t sewn a full garment in years, but just bought this pattern from etsy (I need sleeves due to a nasty scar) http://www.etsy.com/transaction/52014182
Plain, tea-length, non-white coming up! Congrats on saying no to overpriced floof, and getting to hang out with your grandma!
