Mrs. Marmalade, Norwalk, CT/Raleigh, NC Age and Occupation: 27, Administrative Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Army Officer Engagement Date: December 31, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2011 Venue: Old Cadet Chapel/Highlands Country Club About Me: I'm a Tri-State area "lady," through and through. A big chunk of my life has been split between NYC and Connecticut, and I'm finally heading down south to live with Mr. Marmalade. Our long distance relationship has been one adventure after the next, we've spent time in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia, thanks to his military career. Next to Mr. Marmalade, my loves include live music, useless trivia, shoes, design, and my crazy half-tiger kitty, Oliver. I have a passion for food and wine, and I've been known to travel long distances to get my hands on the best meals. I come from a tight-knit big fat Greek Ecuadorian family---we're loud, we talk with our hands, and we spend hours talking loudly with our hands over large meals. I'm going to miss them so much as I pack up and begin my life, far away from home. But with Mr. Marmalade by my side, I'm ready to take on whatever may come. Next up: our wedding!
About Mrs. Marmalade

Hello, Vera!

June 22nd, 2011 @ 10:48 am by Mrs. Marmalade

It was bound to happen. Who was I to think that I wouldn’t like any gowns in Vera Wang’s collection? No really, I always thought that her designs were lovely and sophisticated, but I didn’t even bother looking at her latest line. The reason? I didn’t want to fall head over heels for a dress that was way over my budget.

You know where this is going. So, meet Evelyn.

Hello, Vera! : wedding raleigh wedding dress Wd Fall wd_fall

There she is: simple, sophisticated, romantic, form fitting, and different from the more popular wedding gowns of late.

I want to try her on. I want to march right into the nearest Vera Wang boutique (with an appointment, of course) and take this gown for a little spin.

But there are two reasons that stop me in my tracks: I have no idea what this gown costs. And, as BM Lil $is so kindly put it, I have hips while this lovely model does not. She’s right—it might not be the best silhouette for me (which is what BM Lil $is was trying to say). Choosing a dress from a picture alone is probably not the best idea. But my common sense is being overpowered by my fashion sense.

So am I just headed for a major disappointment?

Did you find that the dresses you tried on looked different on you versus how they looked on the model? Did that change the direction of your bridal-gown shopping?

Don’t rule any particular cut or style out until you try it on. Dresses look completely different in person and off the hanger. A dress you’re unsure of might turn out to be the one.

So fab.

I fell in love with this trumpet dresses, but I have hips too and they looked awful on me, so I ended up with a different type of dress which I loved even more. And my dress looks awful on the model so it was a little revenge.

I wouldn’t rule out any dress out based on a model’s body, but I found I knew ahead of time what would look good on me. I think that dress is gorgeous and I would want you to try it on just to see. You never know! :)

I agree - in order to decide on a dress (especially one you have strong feelings for like the above), you must try it on! Everything looks different on you, and I am not just talking shape. I mean, some dresses just seem to fit your personality and style better - hence finding “the one”!

Oh wow…I love how that dress drapes! I’ve definitely encountered dresses that didn’t translate well to my body type. But, it never hurts to try! :D

Ahh, maybe disappointment! When I was shopping in those pricey Swiss boutiques they kept showing me Vera Wang dresses in the 6000-8000 range. (That’s like $7000-10,000)

But thankfully I didn’t like any of the stuff of hers I saw. The ones I saw were like big brown paperbags. Shapeless, dark white dresses. I was not impressed.

Evelyn looks so lovely though! You know what they say on SYTTD though… don’t even try on dresses not in your price range. It will just lead to disappointment and sadness!

Well I really think that you need to try it on to see whether it will or will not work for you…. you really never know… but then you might have to deal with some heartbreak if you fall in love and it’s totally out of your price….

Although I think the simpler Vera designs are cheaper than the ones that are covered in lace and sparkles and intricate swirls of chiffon…

I loved this dress, too. I have the opposite problem in terms of fit, though. Too much chest. In terms of price, this Vera dress is actually not that bad compared to many of the others probably due to its simplicity. Not sure if you really want to know but you can find the price on the Priscilla of Boston site.

Pretty! (Though I may actually like the one that Megan316 posted even a little better… you should totally try that one on!)

I say go try on dresses with an open mind because you never know….don’t rule anything out. I didn’t try any Vera on because I knew it was totally out of my price point and I knew that I would love something of hers. haha

Like most brides, when I went shopping, I had done some research, I had an idea of the dress that I would like. But when I got to the boutique, my mom & I looked through the beautiful dresses hanging on the racks and decided to try them on, even if they weren’t necessarily the style I had in mind. The dress I ended up picking was the 3rd dress I tried on & wasn’t ANYTHING like what I thought I wanted.

Oh my gosh I LOVE that dress! Well aside from the rule that states you shouldn’t try on a dress you can’t afford becuase you’ll end up with a major heartbreak if you fall in love with it - I wouldn’t let your hips stop you! Sometimes it works anyway, and it may just really bring out your figure. And worst comes to worst, at least you knew you tried and don’t constantly have the dress in the back of your mind!
