A Hairy Situation

June 22nd, 2011 @ 12:40 pm by Mrs. Macarons

I’m stylistically challenged when it comes to doing my own hair. Ninety percent of the time it’s in a ponytail and out of my face; otherwise it’s one of two options:

Naturally, for the wedding I want to do something special, but it’s been a point of contention between Macs and me. He loves my long hair and has always envisioned it cascading over my shoulders in soft curls.

And while I love this look, we’re getting married in Florida, outside, and in September. Those environmental factors + my fine hair = curls for less than an hour or two. I don’t want my hair to look great during our first look and ceremony, only to turn into a stringy, piecey mess by our first dance. That leaves me with some sort of an updo, and finding one we both like has really been a challenge.

According to Macs, tousled chignons remind him of “house cleaning” hair, while more structured ones remind him of ballerinas.

Frustrating, right? I was finally able to find two inspiration ‘dos he liked, but I wasn’t sure how they’d look on me.

By this time, I knew I needed to schedule a hair trial with someone, even if I wasn’t 100% in love with either of the looks. So I did, but I just had this sinking feeling in my stomach that it’d be a waste of money. I was mentally sabotaging my trial and it was still several weeks away. Those looks were those women, not me. I was seriously afraid I’d never find a style that’d work.

Am I alone in thinking that I won’t look like me?

Well, you won’t look exactly like you…you will be wearing a wedding dress and will be all fancied up (which I am guessing you probably don’t do everyday…no?) ;o) But, I bet you will find that you will look like yourself…just a fancier you! (That is how I felt anyway!)

You could always have your hair touched up before the reception after the ceremony if you do the curls.

Also, you never know until after the trial, perhaps you will like the updos once you see them on you.

Or just keep looking for something that is more “you.” Good luck.

Have you considered a half-up-half-down do that works with your hair type and texture, instead of working against it…ESPECIALLY given the conditions you’ll be wearing it in? Or you could ask the stylist to give you an updo that would be lovely for the ceremony, but one that you could let down and “rework” for the reception…one that you wouldn’t have to futz with.

Not alone at all–I went through the exact same misgivings before the hair & makeup trial. Hope everything works out!

I too have long fine hair and I don’t know what to do with it. I’ll be getting married outside next May, and while my fiance loves long curly hair, I’m afraid the curls won’t hold all day. But I don’t know if I’ll like my hair up either since it’s ALWAYS down. Ugh, what a pickle we are in!

Awww, well if you want to look like your normal self with your long hair, you can totally do that. You could try and straighten your hair and make sure it’s all smoothed out and has a nice layered cut or something.

BUT I think you would look absolutely stunning with a nice up-do! And I think you can easily still look like you. It’s not like you’re getting a face plant! Maybe curls is not the answer though, since that is pretty far from your normal hair.

good luck deciding! :)

how about if you have the look of the first one, and then have her teach your MOH how to put it up into a nice updo… I find that something like this works AMAZINGLY!

It’ll kinda be like when you bustle your dress… you bustle your hair too :)

You’re soo not alone. I’ve been putting off my hair trial because I feel so lost! I feel like I haven’t set eyes on an inspiration ‘do that’s totally *me* (and I have absolutely no idea what *me* is, lol). Anyhow, I love your inspiration photos—they’re lovely styles for ladies with lots of beautiful hair (like you)!

I wouldn’t be too concerned about what Mr. Mac says he likes or doesn’t like. Most men (although not all) aren’t really good at knowing how different things will look on you when they see it on someone else. Chances are, you could do something you like, and he wouldn’t even realize he wasn’t supposed to like that style. Because on you, it will be part of a whole picture that is a glowing and beautiful bride. ;)

It’s good that you are thinking ahead as far as possible weather conditions and anything that might make your hair less than you want it to be. I am with you. I am growing my hair out again - two months before FH proposed, I cut off 12in to donate to locks of love (thanks dear! lol) so my hair was pretty short. It’s growing out now and is past my shoulders. 90% of the time, my hair is up in a ponytail or twisted into a simple bun. I can’t stand it being down unless I’m going somewhere nice and even then…I hate things touching my face and so I’m going with an updo as well. We’re getting married in May so the weather could go either hot and sunny or chilly and windy - both conditions of which are not conducive to a happy hairstyle.

Now, as far as Mr. Mac goes, I agree with Mrs. Lox - when the time comes - unless he’s super detail-oriented and opinionated - he won’t even realize the difference. His eyes will be all for you. And as far as whether or not you’ll look like you, you will :)

My hair is always down and the only times I’ve ever had fancy updos is for the 3 high school dances I went to and my MOH’s wedding, so I totally know how you feel about not feeling you. I think a trial is a great idea so you can really get a feel for how you’ll feel with all your pretty hair up on your head!

@Miss Seal: This is SOOOOO me! I have no idea what I want to do with mine and I’m not sure what “me” is. Honestly…”me” is probably a ponytail or a bun with a scrunchie around it! I was in my current position for almost 4 months when I blow-dried my hair one morning and the FL humidity decided not to rear its ugly head so I ran a straight iron over it and wore it down. Even the engineers I work with were stopping by my office or stopping me in the hall to comment on it. One of my co-workers mentioned that I had NEVER wore my hair down before because she had wondered how it would look down. So for the wedding??? No clue! REALLY hoping an “inspiration” pic will drop out of the sky and magically land in my hand when I’m leaving work one day. If that could happen within the next few weeks, that’d be great! :-}

I was more stressed about the hair trial than my make-up trial. We photographed both styles so I could decide later… at one point I wasn’t happy with either. We are our own worst critics.

Have you thought about experimenting with curling techniques to see if any will work for you? Putting wet hair in sponge rollers before I go to sleep keeps my hair curly all day no matter what. Might be worth a try!

you sound like me as far as your everyday hair-dos! But you also have a picky fiance! I know I’m definitely wearing mine up, because I’ve noticed in pictures, I really don’t like the way it looks down. But definitely find something you love just so you feel GORGEOUS on the day of your wedding!!!

honestly, I’d go into the trial with a handful of photos and a handful of adjectives to describe how you want to look/feel on your wedding day. then let the stylist do his/her magic and see how it works out!

We have the same conflict at my house and for the wedding. Mr. D prefers my long, curly hair (my standard ‘do’) but I love straightening it. love throwing it up into a ‘messy bun’ and forgetting, and miss having bangs…wild hair thoughts are creeping back into my mind..!
