Mrs. Marmalade, Norwalk, CT/Raleigh, NC Age and Occupation: 27, Administrative Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Army Officer Engagement Date: December 31, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2011 Venue: Old Cadet Chapel/Highlands Country Club About Me: I'm a Tri-State area "lady," through and through. A big chunk of my life has been split between NYC and Connecticut, and I'm finally heading down south to live with Mr. Marmalade. Our long distance relationship has been one adventure after the next, we've spent time in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia, thanks to his military career. Next to Mr. Marmalade, my loves include live music, useless trivia, shoes, design, and my crazy half-tiger kitty, Oliver. I have a passion for food and wine, and I've been known to travel long distances to get my hands on the best meals. I come from a tight-knit big fat Greek Ecuadorian family---we're loud, we talk with our hands, and we spend hours talking loudly with our hands over large meals. I'm going to miss them so much as I pack up and begin my life, far away from home. But with Mr. Marmalade by my side, I'm ready to take on whatever may come. Next up: our wedding!

Lovely Lavender

June 23rd, 2011 @ 10:48 am by Mrs. Marmalade

I was headed to meet a potential florist the other night with my mom, and I remembered to bring along some examples of what I like. When I was sitting there looking through them all, I realized that I really love lavender.

When I first started thinking of what I wanted our wedding to look like, I pictured a ton of it! But then I changed my mind because I’d seen a so much lavender around the wedding blogosphere that I worried I wasn’t being “different enough.” But, I like lavender. I always have. And when I learned that lavender is a symbol of devotion, joy, and luck, I was sold!

What can I say? I’m a sucker for symbolism—especially in flowers. As a mini Marmalade, I was obsessed with my Anne of Green Gables Treasury. It’s where I first learned of the symbolism of flowers. It’s something that’s stayed with me ever since. So, who cares if I’ve seen other people use lavender? I like it, and my inner literary nerd does, too! Great minds think alike!

Here are some of my favorite inspiration pics that I took to the meeting with our florist.

I like the idea of adding some lavender to my bouquet as a backup plan. Chances are I won’t be able to get a lily of the valley bouquet (which is what I really want) because of the cost and because they should be out of season in July. So this could be a strong contender for my bouquet.

There will be some tables set up outside for cocktail hour. I would love to be able to add some flowers so they don’t look too bare. But I need to keep it simple and cost effective. I have a bunch of Ball jars I would love to use for some small lavender arrangements like these.

A sprig of lavender in a cocktail? Mmm…yes, please! I haven’t really started thinking about the bar. But once I do, watch out! I would love to create a cocktail for our reception if I can (i.e., if it’s not an added expense). A couple years back, I created a lavender syrup that would be nice. Or maybe I could create a lavender-infused gin? Yum.

And last but not least, I think lavender would be perfect for our moms! I am not a fan of the traditional wrist corsages, because they remind me of prom (and the thought of prom makes me shudder). So, instead, I want to have some posies of lavender made for our moms. I think they would like them, especially since lavender is really easy to dry and preserve as a keepsake if they choose.

So what do you think? Anyone else smitten with lavender?

I love it! I hadn’t seen lavender play such a prominent role in a mixed bouquet before.

We’re doing just dried lavender for the ceremony (pew ends, and varying size bouquets for the grandmothers, moms, BMs and me) so I’m always excited so see some in the blog world

Love lavendar. I used it to give fragrance to my clay flower bouquets and the men’s bouts. Now, we have some in our garden. It’s just awesome.

Aww, my mom LOVES lavender, so they have it growing in their back yard. And, speaking of lavender and booze, there is a beer in the Sam Adams home brew competition six pack sampler that is a lavender honey beer and it is so good. I highly recommend giving it a try.

OMG YES!!! I am smitten with lavender…always have been. I think it was because my mom loves it too and I remember it from when I was a little girl. I’m actually growing lavender in our garden this year just so I can use some at our wedding. :-)

OK, Marm. We could be childhood *kindred spirits* ;) I was OBSESSED with Anne of Green Gables (all the movies AND books)!

Love the whole idea of lavender being woven into your big day. Sounds amazing.

I just want to say that I LOVE Anne of Green Gables, one of my favorite books (still).

I think the lavender will be lovely at your wedding.

My awful wedding coordinator let me know just a couple of days before the wedding that the flowers that I wanted weren’t available, so I ended up doing my own out of dried lavender. It was really easy, and I did them all for about $100. When we were done, I made sachets out of the buds.

I love lavender, it pleases every single sense, but it looks especially gorgeous! I’m predicting a change in your color scheme to include this shade ;)

Ohhhh, I love it. Smells beautiful, looks lovely. I had aspirations to grow it earlier this year until I figured out it *might* not thrive in the Florida humidity ;)

I can’t wait to see how you use this!

We’re hoping to include it in my bouquet and some of the boutonnieres. Have you ever had lavender infused lemonade? So yummy and might be a less expensive alternative to a specialty cocktail.

I dearly love lavender, and it’s really good in sugar cookies! My cousin had it as one of her main flowers, and had it in nearly every desert I could think of. Yum!!

I.adore.lavender. I grow several varieties in my garden, and harvest it at the end of the season to dry and use for decor/gifts. I love the look of the lavender buds and white votives in the mason jars…hmmm…I think you’ve inspired me to use it too, especially since my colors are lavender and silver.

my whole wedding was covered in lavender.. people actually thought I sprayed the ceremony room with the essence of lavender (which I didn’t). Such a calming effect, reminds one of the French countryside, love it! (I will say if you use it in boutennieres that all the hugging people do at a wedding squishes them (they are not as hearty as like roses of something), but whatever.

oh my gosh i love it! mainly because you can incorporate it into your wedding in so many different aspects! i’ve always loved the sent of lavender, and have thought about for the wedding, but it won’t fit my color scheme or anything really. but i haven’t really gotten the impression that it’s overdone at all so you should totally go for it!
