Miss Sweet Cream, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Public Relations Account Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Outside Sales Engagement Date: July 4, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church / Rosebank Winery About Me: Born in the ‘burbs of Philly, it took some time living in the Big Apple to realize that I’m a girl who likes her roots. That’s why the mister and I bought a 1950s house on a charming street not too far from our childhood stompin’ grounds. This could also be the reason why our hometown is the scene where we are planning our super sweet, totally charming, BBQ-for-supper wedding that I never knew I always wanted. I DIE over DIY projects and live for vintage, heartfelt inspiration. I obsess over all things mid-century (from forks to furniture). Love is… cartoons and flea markets, and I am known to whip up a mean banana cream pie. I met the Mr. in grade school and after that boy took me for a spin on the handle bars of his BMX, I knew that things would never be the same again. Besides lovin’ my Mr., I also love to plan, sew and create, and that’s just what I’m doing as I navigate through the details, creating a laid-back day that oozes charm; one that will go down in (at least our) history as the Best. Day. Of all time.
About Miss Sweet Cream

Before I even thought about a dream wedding cake, I knew one thing.

There just had to be a vintage wedding cake topper on top.

I envy those brides who use their grandmothers’ cake toppers. You can just imagine your grandma many, many years earlier in your very shoes: a fresh new bride with her one honey on her super-special day—your parents and you just a twinkle in her eye.

Well, I didn’t necessarily have the luxury of using Grandmom Sweet Cream’s cake topper…I don’t even think that she had one in her 1940s wedding…or maybe she did. My super-sweet seasoned grandmom (I have forever promised that I would never tell anyone her age) can’t seem to remember. But she did let me know if she does have one it’s mine!

But I do have access to adopting someone else’s grandmom’s topper…maybe not someone I know…just someone…out there. You may or may not remember that I’m a fool for “antiques.”

Just look at the batch of exquisite, charming bride & groom figures that could grace the top of one of the most special sweets that may ever hit your spot.

I love that they include bits of antique paper and passementerie, along with pieces of sheet music and feathery doves.

So while out on an antique trip where I was scouring flea markets and antique stores hunting like a hawk for good deals and all things retro, I stumbled across this:

My Sweet Spot on Top of the Sweet Spot : wedding cake decor philadelphia Img 068 IMG_068

To tell you the whole truth, we weren’t even engaged yet!! (I know!)

I wasn’t even creating inspiration boards or stalking bridal blogs, oohing and ahhhing over the complete insanity that is out there with all you creative, thoughtful brides in the blogosphere. I was just a “waiting bee” before I even knew that the term existed, and here I was paying five dollars at a flea market for this little lovely. But it just caught my eye, and I knew that we were meant to be. Mind you…we knew that we’d eventually get married…we just didn’t know when.

I cannot wait for it to grace the top of our super-special confection!! I know that there is fluffing still to be done on the vintage netting after taking it out and bleaching it…and some spiffing up here and there…but I think that it’s perfection! If only cake toppers could talk—I wonder the story it would tell!!

So it sat—well hidden—in the top of my closet, and I never mentioned a word about it to anyone. Until now…to you—the whole hive!! (I hope Mr. Sweets isn’t reading this!)

Tell me—did you get something wedding related (even though it can be brutally embarrassing) when you were “waiting” for the ring?

Are you a vintage-cake-topper bride, too!?

I bought a dress pattern. WAY before we got engaged. It was on sale. Such a unique short vintage dress. I couldn’t help myself. Not sure if I will use it for sure now that we are engaged but I will make it into some kind of dress if not a wedding dress.

I started my antique bottle centerpiece collection before we were officially engaged- I even told the etsy seller what it was for, and she gave me a good-luck discount!! I was embarrassed at the time, but I feel like it’s really common.

I bought some wedding magazines, I knew it was coming but I just didn’t know when and a friends of mine basically forced me and then we spent the night flipping through them drinking wine and watching Say Yes to the Dress…very embarrassing to admit!

I’ve been scouring Etsy, Ebay and local flea markets for just the right vintage cake topper since I got engaged in April! Thanks for the fun post!

Very cute!

We were together 7 years before we got married, and other than peeking at bridal magazines here and there and using my best friends wedding as an opportunity to check out wedding stuff on the internets, I didn’t hide anything away. I actually figured we were never getting married!

I didn’t buy anything in particular, but I certainly got some ideas before he put a ring on it! I love all of these toppers! Vintage is looking wayyyy better than another DIY at this point too, so thanks for this post!

FYI: To those vintage-cake-topper-lovin’ peeps: I’m also going to do a flower wreath going around the topper that the florist is throwing in for a few dollars (mind you I am using some pretty “weeds” and some billy buttons)… but thought it would bring that extra “pop”

What a great find! I didn’t purchase anything in particular for the wedding prior to getting engaged, just looked at inspiration online.

I bought bridal magazines. I don’t think that helped speed up the waiting process though, hahaha.

So cute! Haha I made a big purchase before we got engaged, I bought the dress, though he didn’t know till much later (after we were engaged). In my defense, it made logical sense. He had asked my parents (he and my family are horrible at keeping secrets) and we talked about the date we wanted. I figured since I’d be busy in school during our engagement, might as well buy it before. Bad idea though, too much pressure before the engagement haha.

I love flea markets and thrift store finds.

I have been tempted at times to purchase something wedding related, but so far I have resisted. I’m still a waiting bee.

I was too afraid to jinx myself by purchasing anything remotely wedding related! What a great find. :)

OMG! I have the bride and groom in the first picture! They are salt and pepper shakers. I found them at a thrift store for only 29 cents!

I am on the prowl for a vintage cake topper too! But all the ones I find are either creepy or just completely the wrong look (I’m a brunette and my fiance is blonde…I want the cake topper to be like that!) I feel like once I stop looking I will find it, but time is quickly ticking away!

My vintage topper will be the rhinestone crown my mother wore on her wedding day 54 years ago. I’m keeping it a secret, and I can’t wait to see the look on her face.

I was thinking about just doing a monogramed acryllic heart, but that first picture has me falling completely in love! They’re so cute! And would look so cute on either side of a pic of the first kiss as man and wife.

We used my grandma’s cake topper from the 40’s they were made out of bisque ceramic with crepe paper clothing. It even cake complete with a little bit of 60+ year old crusty frosting on the feet. :) Because the were so little and the cake so big, we had the baker put on an extra cake “bump” or a mini layer to give them a small platform of cake to stand on so they weren’t swallowed up visually. Here’s a picture. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jomijolicoeur/2840181884/in/set-72157607178283838

@AlmostMrsOka - Shut the front door! I am so stinkin’ jealous!! 29 cents for that gorgeous pair?? I actually have a bride salt shaker I got for 50 cents and am always looking for her groom. One day they’ll meet again, I just know it ;)

@thefunkyjunky - From my lips to the vintage/antique/flea market gods’ ears, I will pray that you find your perfect cake topper soon!

@Crown - what a great idea! I’m sure that she will be extremely touched!

@Polkdal - That would be an amazing pic!!

@akehurstm - OMG. How precious!!! That is awesome that you got tot use hers!! I especially love the fact that there is a little bit of the 60+ year old frosting on the feet. That is a really really cool detail!!!
