A Season to Marry

June 24th, 2011 @ 11:52 am by Mrs. Funnel Cake

With the decision to take our time planning our religious ceremony, Mr. Funnel Cake and I started mulling over seasons and dates that would work for our wedding. Ohio has some pretty extreme temperatures ranging from -5ºF/-21ºC in the winter to a sweltering 104ºF/40ºC in the summer. It’s also not uncommon for temperatures to drop by up to 50ºF/10ºC in a single day.

We nixed a winter wedding pretty fast because the last time I visited Ohio in the winter I nearly froze my Swiss-climatised arse off in my mother’s house. We also nay-ed summer because the extreme humidity and wall of heat when you walk outside is not something I wanted reflected in our photos.

Spring was up for contemplation, but it is rather temperamental at times with lots of random downpours. We also felt we’d be a bit stressed with less than a year to plan a spring 2011 wedding and spring 2012 was a bit too long of an engagement for us. That narrowed it down to autumn 2011, which meant I had to let Mr. Funnel Cake know THE decisive factor for our wedding date:

The Ohio State University football schedule would without a doubt dictate when we would marry. Mr. Funnel Cake, who is not a sports guy, was a little horrified when I explained how you HAD to consult the schedule (which is usually posted a few years in advance online) before planning a wedding.

In my family’s eyes, you simply cannot have a wedding on a homegame day in Columbus. For one thing, they shut down portions of the highway on big game days. (No joke.) Hotels are usually packed, traffic is a mess, not to mention the fact that my entire Ohioan family needs to watch the game. A wedding is just not as important.

Do you want to compete with all these people for a hotel? I think not.

Mama Funnel Cake knows how fast the non-game days and non-home game days get snatched up in the bridal world, so she was quick to go over the 2011 possibilities with me. We settled on a date in late October so that Indian summer would have passed, the autumn colours would hopefully be in full glory, and it wouldn’t be extremely cold yet. Hurrah, we had a wedding date!

I’m getting married this October in C-bus, too. We went with the Buckeye bye-week for allllll the reasons you mentioned above. I would NOT have been okay with people checking the game scores during my wedding!

My guy and I decided on the date of our first date. April 1. I love it, because 1)It’s April Fools day and fits us perfectly and 2)he’ll never forget it. Only problem is it’s during the last two weeks of hell in my tax office, so that’ll take some reckoning. I love my April Fools Day wedding!

I hear ya! Though, my SIL is getting married on the weekend of the very FIRST home football game of your rivals - the Wolverines - in Ann Arbor…. Um, this kinda concerns me. She is much braver than I.

Ha, my parents met attending OSU and most of my extended family still live in C-bus and I had no choice in becoming an Ohio State fan since I was a wee little thing. So, yeah, I totally get this.

Let me guess, “Hang on Sloopy” will be played at the reception? :)

my parents live in columbus, but since i didn’t grow up in ohio, i still don’t GET the whole osu obsession thing. my friends who have season tickets would 100% have NOT attended our wedding if it were on a home game day. (sweet, thanks guys.)

We decided November was our favourite month and that the 4th was a great day to have a wedding. The weather in Colorado can be just as unpredictable so we are taking a gamble! Last fall the colors were still wonderful at that time because we hadn’t had a frost, but Halloween usually marks the first snow…. so we could be having a white wedding, or a fall one!

As soon as I saw “Ohio” and “Fall” I was like “nuuuuuuu–Buckeyes!!!” ;) I think the same football intensity would apply here in A2 as well, especially since we’re hosting the UM-OSU game this year!

@KCheer: Holy crap, your SIL is brave. I hope her venue is nowhere near the stadium!

Being a HUGE Nebraska football fan, I avoided football season all together… I opted for the long engagement (18 months). Otherwise, I would be the one constantly checking my phone for updates!

The city of Lincoln pretty much shuts down on game day as well… which some people don’t understand. My cousin is getting married in Lincoln this fall… she totally picked the bye week as well!

I’m excited to play OSU this year… should be a good rivalry for years to come!

We just embraced the fact that our wedding will be on a home game weekend. Luckily, we’re in a different town and the Illini haven’t been overly hot over the last couple of years, so hopefully people won’t be busy checking scores throughout the wedding.

LOL we planned our wedding around Ohio State’s football schedule as well. My husband went there, as well as most of his family, so even away game days were off limits for me. Thank God there was a by-week in 2010!

@Mrs. Tartlet: I still feel worried whenever we hang out in a2- like people know I don’t belong! Or that my grandma will find out I was there and be ashamed of me. And one of my favorite parts about living in Toledo is that the fans are pretty split down the middle. OSU/MI game day is a total blast at pretty much any bar because every fan on in your colors is instantly your best friend and everyone on the other side is teased mercilessly. (Of course it doesn’t hurt that OSU has won every game since I’ve been legal to drink…)

@MissCasey: My boss at my last job went to Nebraska and is a huge fan. He was so excited to join the Big 10 so he could harass me on a more regular basis during football season.

Being from Ohio I definitely understand the all-consuming mentality that can be Ohio State football.

We avoided football season altogether. We got married at our alma matre, and they don’t allow weddings on homegame weekends. And we didn’t want to do it on an away day either…both of us would rather watch the game! When we were picking dates, the away schedule wasn’t set in stone yet, so we decided that rather than risk guessing the bye week wrong, we would rather have a spring wedding.

Of course, then we had the stress of waiting to find out if the spring scrimmage (which also brings thousands of visitors to campus) would be on our wedding day…luckily, it was the next weekend!

We originally planned on getting married in the fall of 2012 - and we picked November 3 based solely on Penn State’s schedule (Go State!). But then! with the re-alignment of the Big 10 - their new by weekend is October 13th. And with it, our new wedding date is October 13th! Why fight it? It just makes everyone happier :)

I totally understand this! My fiance and I are both Virginia Tech alums, and football rules our household in the fall. We are also huge Caps/hockey fans, so that schedule was important, too! We ended up settling on a Friday wedding actually, so that we didn’t have to miss a hockey game OR a football game! It’s funny how sports schedules dictate the dates of other “important” things… :)

Well, we originally wanted to marry on the anniversary of the day we started dating, because it was also the day FI proposed (June 12). After lots of haggling with my folks, who wanted me to at least wait until Christmas (um, no) We decided we didn’t want to marry any later than October, because we didn’t want to get too far into the “in” season for fall weddings. We were going to go with the 22nd, because it seemed fair, but the venue we wanted only had one weekend left open. So that’s how we ended up with October 29th.

We are date twins! When we originally booked our venue, OSU did have a game that day and we planned on playing the game on the tv’s to make everyone happy but they ended up changing their schedule and are now game-less on our date! Go bucks and thanks for not playing on our wedding day!

I do not blame you AT ALL for avoiding a home game weekend, even if the OSU program has a few wounds to recover from this year ;)
