Mrs. Ladyfingers, Saint Petersburg, FL Age and Occupation: 30, Marketing Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Sports Writer Engagement Date: December 24, 2010 Wedding Date: November 2011 Venue: Palma Sola Botanical Park About Me: I hail from Oklahoma, he was born and raised in Long Island. Fate brought us together, and now we live in a cute little rental house with our nutty dog, and our aloof cat. We both love to read, watch movies, explore our town, and laugh like hyenas. Hi!
About Mrs. Ladyfingers

In the initial days—OK, hours…fine, minutes—after getting engaged, I did a lot of freaking out. As in, financial freaking out. This was mostly a result of my trying to decide everything within a week with no information whatsoever. I judged the price of things by the first few places we stumbled upon, and had a meltdown thinking there was no way we could save a reasonable amount of money in the time between our engagement and our wedding.

Soon, though things began to look up. We knocked some things off the list right away—limo, f’rinstance—and relegated other items, like bridal-party gifts and pre-wedding beauty treatments, to our own personal budgets. We have some very connected friends with very talented buddies, and managed to book our photographer and DJ based on personal references. We found our hitherto uncovered venue from a bridesmaid, and our sweet graphic-artist friend designed and printed our invitations as a wedding gift to us.

Plus, I planned to DIY a lot. But I love crafts. And I love buying craft supplies. So it was a win-win-win: I get to shop, I get to make pretty things, and guests get to ooh and ahh.

I was particularly adamant about the floral aspect.

Fifty to one my wildflower bouquet would not look nearly as nice as this.

“Flowers are WAAAAY too expensive!” I would screech. “You put ‘wedding’ on it and all of a sudden it’s stupid costly. I am picking wildflowers.”

Sanity surfaced a bit: “Haha…wildflowers. Nah, I’ll just go to the farmers’ market the morning of the wedding.”

Um, that insane plan lasted about five minutes.

“Fine, I’ll order in bulk and make my own bouquets and centerpieces, and it will be awesome and cheap.”

I would tell people this, though, knowing in my heart this wasn’t what I wanted. I wanted people to say I was nuts. That I should hire a florist. That I could find somebody reasonable. I wanted a bouquet and centerpieces designed like I could have never done on my own. I wanted a professional to worry about it, rather than me. And really, I didn’t want to order flowers online and stress they wouldn’t get here on time/be the right color/work well together/be of good quality, even though I obsessively researched review after review. I also really didn’t want to transport these suckers from home to wherever to the venue, and then basically beg a friend to arrange them for me.

OK, so…maybe a florist *wouldn’t* be such a bad idea. But with so much of our budget being delicately trimmed away, would there be room for another vendor, especially for such a potentially pricey detail? And, more importantly, would I be able to squelch my love of pretty in favor of staying on target with our budget and staying true to my “I like it simple” credo?

Did you have any DIYs that morphed from crazy to slightly less crazy to “can I really do this myself”?

Oh wow, that’s a bold plan, doing all the flowers yourself - hope you found a compromise that makes you (and your budget!) happy! We DIY’d all the flowers for my sister’s wedding, but ordered them wholesale from a florist in a nearby city, so we could be sure the colors/types were exactly right - my mom ended up doing all the centerpieces, bridesmaids bouquets and ceremony arrangements on the Friday before the wedding, but it took her about 14 hours and it was ALL she did. I think as the bride, it would be really really hard to have enough time to do it and still enjoy your wedding, though, so while I definitely relate to the moments of budget-panic leading to ginormous DIY commitments, flowers were definitely something I knew I’d have to leave to the pros, at least in large part. If you ARE still thinking of DIY’ing (which - girl, GOOD LUCK, and make sure you have lots of wine!), check with florists in large cities near you - we were able to buy all the flowers for my sister’s wedding wholesale from our usual florist, and he was amazing about making sure the flowers were exactly the right kind and color, and even arranged working some special magic on a lot of 200 roses which came in totally closed to make them bloom fully by the wedding.

Flowers were something I was planning to leave to the pros. I can get pretty crafty, but flowers weren’t going to be part of that.

My mom is doing mine with help from her sisters and friends. Maybe delegate?

Had we decided to use real flowers, I absolutely could NOT have done it myself. But, since I didn’t care that much about flowers, I went the faux-route and did all the bouquets/centerpieces/etc. months in advance, and it totally saved my sanity (and a lot of money). If you really want to DIY but are that worried about it, I do recommend going faux. Our flowers looked beautiful and no one noticed any of them weren’t real!

There are so many creative and amazing brides out there who do their own flowers that it made me believe I could and should do our flowers, but there is something to be said for knowing your limits. I hope you found an awesome deal on a florist who can give you amazing flowers!

I just got a groupon for a floral design class. I decided if that goes well, I am going to be insane and try to DIY the flowers. If it makes me want to pull my hair out and cry, it’ll be florist time!

I agree you have to know your limits. For our wedding we dedicated the Friday before to flowers and setting the venue up. It took 4 of us about 6 hours to do all the flowers (18 centerpieces, 4 bouquets, 9 cocktail table arrangements). They turned out amazing–everyone was so impressed but they are time consuming so plan the time in and ask for help. We got all our flowers from Sam’s Club for about $400 and there were a TON of them. The flowers come in needing lots of water and brown petals removed so that is a couple hours of work a few days before the wedding–but like I said–it save me about $2K

I’m also in the crowd that left flowers to the professionals–I didn’t have a prayer of translating what I had in my mind to the arrangements! Hopefully you found the perfect compromise between your budget and your vision. :)

Not being a flower person, I know I don’t want to waste the money on something that isn’t important to me. Oddly enough, for not liking flowers, I absolutely detest fake flowers. Now, I understand they work for some people and turn out beautiful, but for me it isn’t even being considered. I am going the completely different aproach and making brouch and/or pearl-bead bouqets and bouteneres. I can make them months ahead of time, get many of the supplies for free or little cost, and it is much more “me”. Added bonus for myself is that while it will resemble flowers abstractly, I dont have to hear “oh your flowers look so real” because,I’m sorry but its usually true, that basically translates to ” well if you couldn’t get real flowers, I guess these will do”.

I also struggled with this decision, but ultimately did them with the help of friends & family. I did very little DIY, so this was essentially the only thing I had to “worry” about the week before the wedding. I set up a little flower arranging party on the Thursday before our Saturday wedding. It was so much fun and only took about 3-4 hours. I also wasn’t very particular about my flowers and was going for the messy look. I would answer the following questions first: Do you have help? Is the look you’re going for conducive with having a bunch of inexperienced arrangers throw them together? What other projects will you be tending to the week of the wedding?

I LOVE flowers and despite all the arrangements I’ve made over the years there’s no way I’d attempt it for our wedding. I’m sparing my sanity and leaving it to the pros as well.

Oh I know how you feel! Initially, I was going to DIY all of our centerpieces (but have a florist do our bouquets)…but in the end I realized that it was probably going to be my mother who would be taking care of the bulk of the task, as I’d be busy when the wedding actually came up. So: we found a florist to give us peace of mind. I’m sure you probably already found one…but just in case - my florist was absolutely amazing, and Macarons is using her as well ;)

You know, I got a lot of grief and advice from people insisting I should hire a florist when I decided to do all of our arrangements and bouquets. We had 14 floral centerpieces, 5 bridesmaid bouquets and my bouquet. I have to say I was ecstatic how everything turned out and I think everyone is a little too anti-diy when it comes to flowers, and when you get the hang of arranging, it’s not so difficult. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever so much as plopped flowers in a vase and I did great.

HOWEVER, the caveat is that I had a lot of help. I had 4 bridesmaids to help with arranging, and my brother and fiance helped with the initial unpacking of the flowers, which involved a lot of leaf and thorn stripping, hydrating, etc. But if you have enough help you can totally do it! If anything, just get a florist for any huge arrangements you’ll be having. I’ve posted a link to pictures of my wedding.

YES! I totally feel ya, ladyfingers! I was so sure I was going to do our flowers…and with each passing month my confidence (and desire) wilted. I finally conceded that I needed to hire a florist. Though I definitely think it’s possible to DIY the flowers—I just realized it wasn’t worth the hassle and energy for me! I get overwhelmed very easily so I opted to buy a bit of my sanity ;) Looking forward to seeing what you decide, lady!
