Mrs. Elephant's Picture
Mrs. Elephant, Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 27, Financial Operations Analyst Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, IT Student/Store Manager Engagement Date: March 29, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: The Tribute Golf Club About Me: I'm a Philly native creating roots deep in the heart of Texas. I might be a little obsessed capturing those Kodak moments of anything and everything (mainly on vacations). I've become more of a gamer thanks to Mr. Elephant, who I met online and can't wait to spend the rest of my life with. We are planning a wedding based on our favorite colors, blue and green, with a travel theme for 150 of our closest friends and family. Hopefully our long (2-year) engagement won't kill me!
About Mrs. Elephant

Once we checked out of the hotel it was time to head up to the Tribute and for me to experience a mini meltdown.

The thing with the Tribute is that part of our wedding package included rooms for the bridal party and groom’s party to get ready in. One of the major perks (and added selling point for us) is the size of the Crowne suite for the bridal party which is then the Newlywed suite for the night. This place is huge, and I loved the fact that we wouldn’t be on top of each other while getting ready.

The catch is, if there is a wedding the night before the room is not available until 1 PM(gotta let those newlyweds sleep in). If this was the case we would have been in a smaller room until the bridal suite was available. Lucky for us, there was no wedding the night before so we were able to get into the room as early as we wanted. I let the venue coordinator know that we would be getting there around 10:30 since our hair and make up team would be starting at 11.

We arrived at the Tribute, got some carts to haul all of our suitcases and dresses upstairs and found out that the room was locked. No problem. We headed down the hall to see if the housekeeper had a key to let us in. She didn’t, so one of my girls went downstairs to the pro shop to ask if they could open up the Crowne suite. One of the guys came  running upstairs and knocked on the door. I was a little confused, since the room was blocked off for us, and lo and behold, there was a response from inside. The pro shop guy asked how long until they could get out of the room, and then told me it would be some time for the couple to get out and have the room cleaned.

Cue mini meltdown.

I started to tear up and told him that he needed to get that room cleaned up as fast as possible since our hair and makeup team were on their way and I did not want to have them set up in one room to then move into another. I was upset because I wanted to get settled and begin to enjoy the morning.

Mama E and my girls calmed me down. We headed down the hall to wait in another room while that person vacated the room. Bethany (the venue coordinator) came up and apologized profusely for the breakdown in communication. It turns out the couple in the room was there to help out with the golf tournament or were friends with an employee or something (in my mini meltdown state I wasn’t really paying attention) and they had another room for Saturday night, but since the big suite was open Friday night they decided to sleep there. Bethany informed us that the room would be cleaned that second and we would be in it in no time. She also offered some mimosas to help calm me down (free alcohol is always a plus).

Mama E and I enjoying mimosas once we got into the bridal suite

Looking back I realize that this was nothing to cry over, but in that moment I saw it as a sign that everything that day was going to go wrong. I so wanted to be the “zen bride” but my emotions got the better of me. There are definitely worse things that could happen and I’m happy to say that the only other tears that fell from my eyes that day were happy tears.

Did any other brides have non-zen moments during the planning period or on their big day?

We are doing the same thing for our wedding — getting the big suite in the AM so all the girls can get ready and then staying there for the night as newlyweds. Let me tell ya I would be FREAKING OUT if that happened to me, so I totally don’t blame you for having the meltdown. So happy that everything worked out and that you got mimosas to calm you down. Mimosas make everything better don’t they?? :)

I probably would have threatened to kick the door down and knock some heads in if I were you so clearly you are much more level headed than I. I’m glad everything worked out for the better though.

I don’t blame you a bit. It may seem small in hind sight, but it was assumed that you were good to go, and that all you had to do was show up!

My non-Zen moment was when my fiance’s sister knocked on my door (I was getting ready alone) and asked if she could wear a white dress to the wedding–and she held it up for me to see. This was the last thing I wanted to deal with–my MIL had mentioned she was trying to talk her out of it, and to be honest I didn’t really care. But her marching over to my room an hour before I got married because my fiance told her to get my permission irritated me to no end at that moment. I told her: if she wanted to wear it? Fine. If she wanted to wear something else? Fine. I was short and ended things quickly, and pretty much shut the door in her face. Not my greatest moment. :)

I would have reacted exactly the same way! I think that there are acceptable excuses for bridal meltdowns, and this was definitely one of them! Good to see that you had a happy ending!

@Misslizzy: They say it was a breakdown in communication but it did really suck to start the day off waiting around.

@TinyTina: Oh yes they do!! hehe

@Phantom: Oh man, I feel ya! Mr. E’s sister asked me prior to the wedding what colors I preferred that she not wear. I said white and red. What does she end up wearing after asking me this? A white dress. I won’t lie, I was a bit ticked when I saw her show up (during family portraits), but I couldn’t do anything about it so I just moved on.

Maybe it was good that happened early in the day so you could get your non-zen moment over with early and enjoy the rest. It is an awesome room though and totally worth freaking out over!
