The Ring Is the Thing

June 28th, 2011 @ 10:18 am by Mrs. Cannon

One of my favorite things about all this wedding stuff is all the mail that’s involved. I buy a lot of things online, and no matter how stupid the contents of the package are, I get excited over them. So, imagine my delight when Mr. Cannon brought in the mail and announced I had received not one, but two packages. *Yay, mail!* I was a bit confused, however, because I was only expecting one. He handed both of the packages to me, and I noticed that they both had a return address of the place where I purchased Mr. Cannon’s ring. Hmmm, odd. I only purchased one ring. On the invoice they had listed the ring and the ring box as separate items. Could they have sent them in separate packages? That would be an, um, interesting choice, to put it nicely.

So, I opened the first package and handed the contents to Mr. Cannon. It was both a ring and a ring box, so my theory of separate packages was wrong. He attempted to put it on and it was too small. I was annoyed because I had ordered the size he had said. He was annoyed because that was the size they told him to get when he got sized. I quickly grabbed the packing list to make sure I didn’t screw it up and order the wrong size. Size 8.5? That’s the wrong size. How could it be the wrong size? Me, make a mistake? Never! Much like Mary Poppins, I’m practically perfect in every way. (Totally kidding here in case this flies over anyone’s head.) But I was positive I had ordered the right size. Then I noticed that the name on the packing list was not my name, nor the address where I live. I looked at the ring. It didn’t even look like the one we ordered. It finally hit me. The company had packaged up someone else’s ring and accidentally stuck the wrong shipping label on it. This was not Mr. Cannon’s ring. Call me Can-cy Drew. I solved the Mystery of the Two Packages.

So, we opened package number two and it was the right ring! Mr. Cannon tried it on and it fit. He was happy with it, and I was happy he liked it. It is truly the most boring ring in the world—white gold with absolutely no adornments or anything. But that’s exactly what he wanted, so that’s what he got. I had kind of expected him to want something a bit more exciting—maybe along the lines of Mr. Cinnamon Bun’s or Mr. Bunting’s ring. But he had a very clear idea of what he wanted, and what he wanted was simple and boring. And he got what he wanted.

Here’s a more detailed shot, in case you don’t believe me that there are no details.

As for the other ring, I sent an email to the company’s customer-service department explaining what had happened and said that I would be happy to send the ring back if they provided postage costs. They wrote back and said they were mailing an envelope with postage paid to my house so I could send it on to the correct person.

Even though Mr. Cannon and I are totally satisfied with the ring we received, I’m not sure that I would use the company again due to that whole situation. I know mistakes happen, so that doesn’t really bother me as much as the idea that they just had me send the ring on to the right person. I would have expected that they would want me to send the package back to them while they sent the other person a different ring to insure quality control. Or at least to make sure that she got her ring in a timely manner. I mean, I could have sat on that package for as long as I wanted and that poor woman would have had to wait. The ring wasn’t engraved or anything, either, so it’s not like there was some great defining characteristic that meant this ring should be sent to her over any other. But I seriously doubt that I’m going to be in the market for another wedding ring for Mr. Cannon anytime soon, so they probably don’t care.

I agree with you, yeah, mistakes happen… but they shouldn’t have asked you to send the package. Again, you could have totally sat on it, let it collect dust… I would also think twice about ordering from them.

Getting packages in the mail for wedding items was so much fun! I also think that they would send another ring to the customer and have you send the ring back.

That is very odd behavior from the company. I’d be interested to know who you purchased the ring from.
Mr. Cannon’s ring looks awesome! And it sounds like it’s exactly what he wanted so that’s great!

that’s the same kind of ring my fiance wants. very plain.

Also, I’m in a customer service job and unfortunately it’s more cost effective to have the package shipped right to the recipient than to have it shipped back to the company first. Having the package arrive late is a risk some companies are willing to take.

Unless they other woman called and said she needed her ring immediately, the company won’t bother sending another shippment (and sometimes not even then).

Thankfully I don’t sell anything as important as wedding rings and my customers understand the extra wait…

I’m glad you weren’t the woman whose ring was miss shipped!

I also find it odd that they would put the responsibility on your shoulders to mail out the other ring. We had a similar thing happen with car parts; Mr. Tartlet ordered a $50 part and they lumped in somebody else’s order with his for a $2,000 part. o.O This company had us send the mistaken item back to them straightaway, though!

Oooh I love Mr. C’s ring. Very simple and elegant. That is so strange that they had you send it directly to the correct recipient. Way to solve the case Can-cy Drew!
