Mrs. Marmalade's Picture
Mrs. Marmalade, Norwalk, CT/Raleigh, NC Age and Occupation: 27, Administrative Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Army Officer Engagement Date: December 31, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2011 Venue: Old Cadet Chapel/Highlands Country Club About Me: I'm a Tri-State area "lady," through and through. A big chunk of my life has been split between NYC and Connecticut, and I'm finally heading down south to live with Mr. Marmalade. Our long distance relationship has been one adventure after the next, we've spent time in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia, thanks to his military career. Next to Mr. Marmalade, my loves include live music, useless trivia, shoes, design, and my crazy half-tiger kitty, Oliver. I have a passion for food and wine, and I've been known to travel long distances to get my hands on the best meals. I come from a tight-knit big fat Greek Ecuadorian family---we're loud, we talk with our hands, and we spend hours talking loudly with our hands over large meals. I'm going to miss them so much as I pack up and begin my life, far away from home. But with Mr. Marmalade by my side, I'm ready to take on whatever may come. Next up: our wedding!
About Mrs. Marmalade

Finally, our venue!

I’ve put this off for way too long. As I mentioned before, it was a tough choice to leave our dream venue. So tough, that as much as I love our current venue, there’s a little part of me that still wishes we could have stayed with the original site.

But there’s no sense in regret, especially not when this place is so perfect for us!

I wasn’t sold on having a wedding in New York state, but as time went on, I began to see that it didn’t matter what I wanted, as our local options were very limited. Looking back on it, I wish I could have told myself to chill out because the Hudson Valley is not that far and our venue is awesome!

So let me introduce you to the Highlands Country Club. It’s a small private club located near the Hudson River.

This is the area where we will have our cocktail hour; there is furniture that will be placed there. (They were cleaning up from the night before, so things are moved around a bit.) And see that fire pit on the right hand side? There’s three of them, and they will be lit toward the end of the night.

Mama and Thia Marmalada making a surprise appearance!

This is the main reception space. The furniture you see there will be outside for the cocktail hour. I love this room. It’s elegant, but it doesn’t have the feel of an overly gilded “wedding factory” I was trying to avoid. And see the stacks of chairs in the back? Did you notice that they are Chiavari chairs? Because I did! The white Chiavari chairs belong to them and are part of the standard setup! Woohoo! Nothing extra to rent!

Here’s a another look:

The tables are oblong and I love that too! This may be completely and totally neurotic to admit, but I was having trouble designing the table decor on round tables. It’s probably because so many of my inspiration pictures contain long banquet tables. OR, it could be because I was over-thinking things again.

There are two fireplaces, located on opposing sides of the room. Here’s a closer look. It’s a perfect spot for some vellum-wrapped luminaries!

And that’s pretty much all there is to our reception space!

Seriously. It’s a small venue, and that’s part of its charm in my opinion. But there are a couple other pics I should share. Starting with a very important area:

This is the restaurant that is connected to the club, also known as Tavern. For our wedding, the restaurant will become our bar (get it? important area?). I love the rustic and eclectic feel of the space!

Here is the solarium. It’s where I plan to put our DIY photobooth. It’s also where cocktails will be held in case of bad weather. (I’m so superstitious I had trouble typing that out—fingers crossed!)

Last but not least:

You Can't Always Get What You Want : wedding raleigh venues P107002 P107002

This is part of the bridal suite. Just wanted to share because I love the charm of it. We’re not getting ready there.

That’s it! Small. Elegant. And completely not what I thought we would end up with. Let’s see how it stands up to my venue checklist:

1. Close to Home - Not really. It’s about an hour away. But an hour is an hour and a half closer than the original venue. So check!

2. Easily Accessible to Travelers - Yep! You can fly into any one of the NYC area airports. And for my friends living in NYC, you can easily hop on a train from Grand Central and be at the local train station in no time (and the stop is a minute down the road from the venue).

3. Cost - YES!!! We’re saving so much money that we’ll be able to invite 20 more people and stay within our budget! I can’t tell you how happy that makes me.

4. Flexibility/Simplicity - Yes. I don’t have to worry about coordinating so many vendors here. And we would be able to move our date if Mr. Marmalade’s schedule changes.

So lesson learned. My aversion to any place that had the words “country club” (or “banquet hall,” “wedding wonderland,” etc.) proved to be silly. My need to be different proved to (once again) be a pain in the butt. I mean seriously. This place is what I needed, even if it’s not what I originally had in mind. But in life, and especially in weddings, you have to roll with the punches and relax a little.

Just like those Rolling Stones said, You can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, well you just might find, you get what you need!

(Who knew the Stones were wedding experts, too?)

Were you surprised, like me, with the venue you ultimately ended up with?

YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW EXCITED I AM…to have a Hudson Valley Bride on here. I think the Highlands is gorgeous. I know you will probably be getting into all this in the blog but for my immediate gratification, would you mind PM’ing me some info aka cost p/p, capacity etc.

Thanks so much!

Your venue looks lovely, and SO charming - i really love the “curtains” on the covered terrace, and yay for oblong tables, they’re my favorite too!! I hear you on the tiny sad voice though - similarly, I really really didn’t want a country club, but ended up at ours because the price, convenience and location was too easy to pass up, after our first choice venue proved to be impossible to work with - our current venue is totally pretty, but sometimes I still mourn my erstwhile relaxed-chic beachy wedding :( (especially when they announced the newest bee’ and her venue - our first choice! both fun and a little sad for me! but, happy for her!)

Seriously this venue is AMAZING! Most people would die for free chivari chairs and a non-tacky decorated place - wood floors, schmancy fire places, lovely plain walls (seriously, what is up with gross wallpapers at venues??) …sigh, it is just so perfect. Good choice Marm - I can’t wait to see your wedding here!

Marm, I’m in love with your venue. White Chiavari chairs aside (that I’m totally drooling over right now), the hardwood floors and gorgeous chandelier? The solarium? The place is a dream!

YaY for Hudson Valley Brides! My husband and I got married in Stony Point, NY in April, which is only about 20 minutes from the Highlands Country Club.
HCC is a beautiful venue, and I was going to go check it out, however it wasn’t able to hold the amount of people on our guest list. :( We did end up finding another beautiful venue though. :) Can’t wait to see your wedding pictures!

Addendum: Don’t be too good of a blogger that Highlands decides to bump prices up. LOL!

I think this happens with so much in wedding planning. Our venue was the 1st we looked at because it was the best price. I didn’t think we’d like it, but I was totally wrong.

We just had our wedding at the Highlands last month! It was absolutely the perfect venue for us….and I hope for you too! Adrienne is so great to work with! And if it rains (or sprinkles, as it did for us), the solarium is so ideal for the ceremony - we made a last minute switch, and I’m so glad we did. If you want any ideas, our wedding was up on SMP a few weeks ago: http://www.stylemepretty.com/2011/06/10/hudson-river-valley-wedding-by-robert-and-kathleen/

Feel free to get in touch with anything (I’m originally from CT too - right down the street from Norwalk)!

I love how so many people are commenting about this place! I went here for a christmas party years ago and this was my first choice for a venue. We went the Vegas route, but you’ll have a beautiful wedding here :)

I feel like you and I are kindred spirits! My fiance is also in the military and was stationed in NC for two years. We are from Rockland County, NY and I was really interested in Highlands until I called and they could not accommodate my 200+ guests. It’s a beautiful venue, best of luck!!

Woooo! Yay for Hudson Valley brides!! My own big day is just 2 weeks away! We looked at the Highlands Country Club too, but ended up on the other side of the river :) It’s truly a great venue though and I can’t wait to see what you do with it! Congrats :)

@Ashley:
Hi! I am interested in Highlands as my venue also. I haven’t had a chance to see it in person yet. How many people were at your wedding? It looks small from the pictures. I was also wondering if the bar/dj/band were set up in the reception room or elsewhere? I can’t tell where they would fit! Thanks!!
