Mrs. Ladyfingers's Picture
Mrs. Ladyfingers, Saint Petersburg, FL Age and Occupation: 30, Marketing Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Sports Writer Engagement Date: December 24, 2010 Wedding Date: November 2011 Venue: Palma Sola Botanical Park About Me: I hail from Oklahoma, he was born and raised in Long Island. Fate brought us together, and now we live in a cute little rental house with our nutty dog, and our aloof cat. We both love to read, watch movies, explore our town, and laugh like hyenas. When I’m not obsessively wedding crafting, I enjoy stalking style and decorating blogs, making collages and painting, napping, thrifting, rearranging our bookshelves, and being a total weirdo with my friends. Hi!
About Mrs. Ladyfingers

In the early days of planning and the fluster of page-bookmarking and image-saving, I came upon this super fantastic image…

…and decided I had to make OUR initials for OUR wedding. I searched far and wide for paper-flower tutorials, and finally found one that seemed simple enough that even I could do it.

Yeah, turns out I was wrong.

First, I bought the wrong kind of glue because I couldn’t find anything called Crystal Effect. The folks at my local arts and crafts store were no help (big surprise), but I finally found what looked like an alternative in Ye Olde Scrapbooking Aisle: Glossy Accents by Inkssentials. It promised to dry to a hard, clear, glossy finish—just like I like ‘em—so I loaded it up with a circle punch and a slew of paper in our wedding colors, and carted her home.

Awesome glue.

With this more securely drying glue, the paper-flower-making process became much easier, but still not a cinch. If I’m moving too quickly, or zoned out or tired (as usual), I’d screw up. I would get the flower all perfectly positioned, with the glue on the paper circle that would adhere to the back of the flower, and secure everything in place, poise the circle over the flower, and—BLAMASDH (a technical sound)—the flower would pop open, the circle would end up on my hand, and glue would be EVERYWHERE.

I also figured I’d just cut our initials out of one of the thousand pieces of poster board I had around the house. And ended up with this:

You don’t even want to see my ampersand.

Not bad, considering they’d be covered with paper flowers. But then I made a special trip to Joann because I needed to get some gray ribbon for our invitations (more on that later), and did you know that Joann is SOOOOO much more awesome than Michaels?! Seriously! Really, it is. You should go. I browsed the aisles a bit, and not only found a huge collection of Martha Stewart party doo-dads, but also I found these:

Huge, sturdy, blank paper mache letters! Holy yes!

I have a lot of paper flowers to go…

I’ve got just over five months to turn all this…

…into this.

But soon enough, these adorned, color-coordinated initials will be ready to fancy up the wall of our venue!

Thanks! I hope this turns out good, also. The other day I considered chucking it altogether, but I think I’d regret it. Pull for me here!

Yes, Michael’s SUCKS. they lie about EVERYTHING (such as they DO honor competitor ad’s even if they ARE in the next city over which is over an hour away).
Nope, don’t hate ‘em at all…. ;)
Soooooo glad you had another store to go to!!!! YAY for Joann’s!!!! The flowers look great and I can’t wait to see the finished product!!!!

YES. Generallyl Joann’s is SO much better than Michaels. We are also lucky to have a AC Moore in town which is better than both IMO.

@lolo7835: I have never been to an AC Moore! The closest one is 90 miles away. But I grew up with Hobby Lobby, which was also pretty awesome. I love craft stores.

I love this idea!! I definitely want to do this…are you using just your (soon to be) last name, or both first nams initials and last name?

@btbhigh5er: We’re just doing our first initials, and I want to do an ampersand betwen (&) but I can’t find one anywhere - and I CANNOT cut a decent one out for the life of me! If anybody knows where I can get one, let a girl know ;)

Super cute! I LOVE the colors and the button you are doing in the middle!

Just an idea for an ampersand - can you print an outline of one out on the computer and trace it onto cardboard? I know you’d have to print it out on multiple pages (and tape together before tracing) to make one large enough, but if you want it really bad, it might be worth it!

Glossy Accents makes everything so sturdy! It’s what I used for all my paper roses, and those things are TOUGH.

Your paper pinwheels are so, so cute! And, I’ve also had better luck at JoAnn’s.
