Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich's Picture
Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich, Washington, DC/Cape May, NJ Age and Occupation: 28, School Counselor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 40, Collegiate Athletics Engagement Date: March 27, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Congress Hall Hotel About Me: I am a school counselor who spends my day wrangling children and my nights attempting to be creative with wedding projects. My enthusiasm for each of these activities far surpasses my skill. Thank goodness Mr. Cucumber Sandwich is there to pick up the pieces and be the voice of reason about my DIY tries. I have an obsession with terrible romantic comedies (‘From Justin to Kelly’ anyone?, anyone?!?), competitive Scrabble play, and hot dogs. I could eat astronaut ice cream for every meal and can’t seem to resist buying more shoes. Our wedding is going to be a true hodge podge of semi-destination, tradition, Yuengling, New England charm, with just a dash of ‘Jersey Shore’ thrown in. It has been six years in the making and I can’t wait to marry my best friend.
About Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich

Picking our wedding date turned out to be a happy accident. Originally when Mr. Cuc Sandwich and I first thought about getting engaged (many, many, many, many years ago), we imagined a fall of 2010 wedding. Sadly, the time frame we talked about for him to propose came and went. He did not put a ring on it.

So after calm discussions (hahaha), we decided to move the wedding back to the fall of 2011. When we did get engaged there would not have been enough time to plan and save for a wedding. There wasn’t any reason for us to stress about the wedding before planning even began, so we just pushed it back a year. Having a wedding in the fall was my idea, and Mr. Cuc Sandwich has been gracious enough to go along with it.

The day we got engaged, my fifth phone call of the morning was to my dream wedding venue (coming soon!). After getting sample prices back from the venue, I realized maybe my dream venue was perhaps too much of a dream. Sensing my dismay, Mr. Cuc Sandwich was determined to make it work and suggested either a Friday night or a Sunday on a holiday weekend when the rates were lower. With a huge amount of luck, the venue was open on Sunday of a holiday weekend in the fall!!

So really, the venue dictated our date more than we did, but in the end it turned out fantabulously (it’s a word). We didn’t have an attachment to any date in particular, so this was fine by us.

How did you pick your wedding date?

Picking June 4th was a no-brainer for us! It’s my parent’s anniversary, DH’s parent’s anniversary, and it landed on a Saturday this year. We’re looking forward to celebrating our anniversaries together every year!

@MsFarmer: We’re getting married on my parents’ anniversary as well!

My parents’ anniversary falls on a Saturday this year, and I have always wanted a fall wedding, so it was perfect. It’s also a long weekend for most people which worked for us since we will have quite a few out of town guests.

Well, we had originally picked July 16, because I wanted to make sure that the weather wouldn’t be TOO hot, but no chance of rain, either.

But, due to family drama and some other issues, we had to set our date back a month. So now August 13 it is! We picked 8/13 because the best man’s wife is due to have her baby on 7/31. So we wanted to make sure they had enough time to recoup after the baby to come!

Haha! Had the identical experience (in fact we almost took the same Sunday of Columbus Day ‘12) but after leaving our meeting with that venue, awoke from the Crazy Spell, and realized we weren’t willing to not have a spring wedding, nor were we willing to invite 75 random people/pay for food we weren’t going to eat! But congrats on finding a way to work within the bold parameters I know the venue sets!

Picking our day was easy: our dating anniversary, which also happens to be April Fools Day (not a date my guy will likely ever forget–it’s his favorite holiday)

I wanted a fall wedding as well. And October wedding in particular, our venue had all of October available so we got lucky and got first choice. We chose October 22, 2011. I love the sound of it. It was either that, or October 16, 2011. and I am so glad we decided with the 22nd, because the week after we put the deposit down, we found out that his cousin (who is also getting married, and at this point we had NO idea when) and her fiance are getting married October 16th. :) We would have had a catastrophy. Its funny how it worked out! Cheers to fall weddings!

I’m glad you were able to get your dream venue by going with a different day! We picked the Saturday that was close to the day we started dating.

Our wedding date was dictated by a combination of our schedules and other weddings scheduled that time of year. Sounds like it worked out perfectly for you! Also, yes, fantabulously is absolutely a word.

We chose 7/4/13 because it falls on a Thursday (we will save beaucoup bucks with our vendors), and friends and family can make it a long weekend to party with us. We’re also telling folks that we wanted to be married on the 4th of July so that we’ll always be guaranteed fireworks on our anniversary in one way or another. :)

Our wedding date was also, basically, picked by the venue. we knew where we wanted to get married, and they happened to have a cancelation for the room we wanted between the time we called(a saturday) and the time we went to meet them(3 days later on tuesday) we figured it was meant to be so we snatched it up!

Looking forward to seeing your dream venue! We also went with an “off” day to save some $$$, but our initial time frame was centered around Mr. Tartlet’s time off between finishing school and starting his job.

@MsFarmer: @Sunshine1810: My parents got married on Labor Day weekend but I was worried it would be too hot.
@Crown: Great idea!

We totally let our date be picked by the venue and when our teacher sisters and college student brothers could be there. Can’t get married without the siblings!

We chose our date because we wanted an “off” day, thinking it would be easier to find vendors for our small wedding. It’s hard to be a small wedding in a big wedding world. BTW… I think you are my date twin. :)

Oh and P.S. we were planning an April wedding trying to avoid the wonderful heat in SC. We went to look at a venue in the local area that the fiance’s mom had suggested and when we mentioned the date, the owner told us all of April was already filled. When we went back later to look at it set up, we mentioned to the owner that we’re going to have to give in to the wonderful summery month of July (it’s my only month off from medical school, so however much I’d like to believe I can do a million things at once, I should try to not have a nervous breakdown for the wedding). Again, he told us there was one Saturday left. Most of our guests will be traveling, so as much as I wanted a cheaper Friday or Sunday, it just wouldn’t have been too fair for the wedding guests, and my MOH probably wouldn’t have been able to make it. So seriously, it was only May AND THERE WAS ONE SATURDAY IN JULY LEFT?! So there’s our wedding date.
