I am an aspiring foodie with a weak spot for the unusual and I love semi-reality food television. My other loves easily include laughing as a form of exercise, a book that I can't put down, summer baseball games, espresso with whipped cream, couch potato days and nights with the ridiculous Mr. Bacon, and our two kitties, Lincoln and Sawyer. We're planning a faux-destination wedding for 150 of our closest friends and family in the city we've both adopted as home that has a modern, yet whimsical twist and as many personal touches as we can manage.

Layers of Love

June 29th, 2011 @ 1:53 pm by Mrs. Bacon

So we left off at cake. What good cake it was, but we had two great options to pick from: Amy Beck or Luscious Layers. Both great cakes, both great flavors, both great people in charge, so how to decide? Time to take a look at what else they had to offer,

After looking at the sketches from each place, we were swayed by the varied tiers that Luscious Layers offered and some clever interpretations of our idea. We wanted a skyline cake with each layer representing a part of our past, present or future. The first tier would be London to represent where we met, Chicago in the middle to represent where we live and South Africa to represent our future and honeymoon. They had a great portfolio of Chicago skyline cakes and put together a dynamite mock up of what our cake would look like.

To top it off, Ashley from Luscious Layers took our sweet table idea to a whole different level. We were trying to brainstorm through cookies that worked with our various themes and icons, and she offered up the idea of making mustache cookies and putting them on sticks like the props we’ll have in the photo booth. Brilliant! I love that she just took elements of our wedding and ran with it and pulled lots of elements together. Besides, the bakery makes total delish macarons and is able to provide them for the wedding at a super reasonable price. No last minute DIY baking project like I had planned and within our budget? Sign me up!

The ladies at Amy Beck had great cakes, but in the end, Luscious Layers took the cake (Haha, I crack myself up!). I’m not sharing the final design yet because I’m super excited and what it to be a surprise, but I will let it slip that our flavors are Red Velvet with Cream Cheese frosting, Almond with Whipped Cream and Fresh Strawberries, and Coconut with Coconut Cream. I can’t wait to eat this on the big day!

What were your big points when picking a baker? Are you having more than one flavor in your cake?

Sadly our cake comes with the venue but I might have to set up some tasting appointments to weigh my options. Your cake flavors sound delicious and I am jealous of the macarons!
