Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich's Picture
Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich, Washington, DC/Cape May, NJ Age and Occupation: 28, School Counselor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 40, Collegiate Athletics Engagement Date: March 27, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Congress Hall Hotel About Me: I am a school counselor who spends my day wrangling children and my nights attempting to be creative with wedding projects. My enthusiasm for each of these activities far surpasses my skill. Thank goodness Mr. Cucumber Sandwich is there to pick up the pieces and be the voice of reason about my DIY tries. I have an obsession with terrible romantic comedies (‘From Justin to Kelly’ anyone?, anyone?!?), competitive Scrabble play, and hot dogs. I could eat astronaut ice cream for every meal and can’t seem to resist buying more shoes. Our wedding is going to be a true hodge podge of semi-destination, tradition, Yuengling, New England charm, with just a dash of ‘Jersey Shore’ thrown in. It has been six years in the making and I can’t wait to marry my best friend.

Stand By Me

June 29th, 2011 @ 11:26 am by Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich

I have two Sammie sisters, so I knew I would always have at least two bridesmaids. Of course, I asked them immediately after getting engaged. This was before I discovered DIY wedding crafts and the hive. Now I have seen so many adorable and crafty ways to ask your ladies. I wish I could have a do-over.

I wanted to ask them in a cute way instead of just blurting it out over the phone, but the cards I DIY’ed were atrocious. Thank God I don’t have any photographic evidence of the cards, but even if I did I would be too embarrassed to show you. I sent them a card (let’s just say it was on computer paper folded a couple of times and handwritten) and two different books on being a bridesmaid.

I restrained myself from highlighting different passages in the book that I liked or thought were important…barely.

I waited awhile to ask my other three bridesmaids, and thankfully my DIY projects went up a notch (a small notch). For my two best friends from college, I sent them “will you be my bridesmaid?” cookies from The Flour Pot in Ambler, Pennsylvania. Super cute and I left the DIY to someone else!

Smart all around! They both loved the cookies and said yes.

For my final bridesmaid, I had to come up with something different because I plagiarized the bridesmaid-cookie idea from her. I looked around Etsy for ideas for cards or crafts. After looking at the prices, it seemed a little crazy to spend that much on one card and shipping. Like many brides before me, I saw a cute card and thought to myself, “I could do that.” I must have had bridal brain because I don’t know any other time in my life when I have thought those words.

As luck would have it, I can do that! It wasn’t the most elaborate card that has ever existed, but it is the best card I have ever made (and only one, for that matter). The only thing I made sure to do first was to measure the envelope I had and then work from there. It was all on card stock and printed on my computer. I used card stock that I had around, glued it to the front of the folded card stock, and VOILA! It was good enough that she said yes!

So now I have five bridesmaids: two sisters, two friends from college, and one friend from high school.

Anyone else ask their girls in a cute way? How did your first DIY project turn out?

I have that b-maid book! (I bought it way back when I was in my very first wedding as MOH…I found it very useful!) Anywho, I made cards - used strips of organza and ribbon to make a mini-dress and then fashioned a paperclip into a hanger! It was time-consuming, but fun! Little did I know that was just the beginning of DIY madness!

I also DIY’d that same “Will you …” card, except I just put mine on cute paper.

I totally didn’t know about all the fun ways to ask either! Those cookies are so cute! My MOH was over the phone after getting engaged and my other bride’s maid was at a picnic.

Those cookies are so cute! How could you say no when you get a cookie like that?

Those cookies are awesome. I texted and emailed and called and just asked in person. Totally lame, in hindsight.

I totally considered going the cookie route but instead went with some slightly atrocious looking DIY cards, lol. The card you made looks great!!!

I asked in person, except for the one BM who lives on the opposite coast (I called). Then I gave each of them a “care package” which included:

1. card thanking them for accepting and telling them how awesome they are
2. tape measure for when they order their dresses
3. a little bottle of hand sanitizer that says “i love bling!” and had a picture of a ring on it - represents me
4. apple scented lotion that represents FI
5. 5 pieces of chocolate that represent the 5 BMs
6. “bridesmaid” tanks

I work at Things Remembered, and since I was asking my BMs (half-sister is MOH, 2 besties from HS and my college roommate) shortly before Christmas, I chose silver ornaments in the shape of an angel, and engraved on each:
“Name
Sister
Friend
Angel
Bridesmaid
It’s all the same to me.”
and on the back,
“Merry Christmas!
Love, Andrea”

They were actually pretty affordable with my discount.

I have since added on a 5th gal… His younger sister, as a second maid of honor (he has two best men!) and asked her with a card from etsy I had customized to match our wedding colors.

I gathered my together and took them for lunch to ask them to be my bridesmaids. Each was unaware that the other girls were going to be there. It was a fun way to introduce some of my friends to each other and to just have a fun time!

Although I haven’t quite finished the project….

I’m going to ask my bridesmaids with bottles of wine since we are getting married at a winery. I’m taking bottles of wine from the winery and removing the back label. I’m writing each one a short, personalized letter to each of them telling each one how much she means to me on a new back label with the last line being “Will you be my bridesmaid?”. Each new back label will be affixed to the bottle. I’ll be hand delivering each bottle and my plan is to share the bottle of wine with them at some point in time before the wedding. That way I know we’ll be sharing some one on one time together before the wedding while enjoying the yummy wine and they will have a personalized keepsake of the occasion.

I bought that book for my MOH and I added post it notes to some pages, highlighting things and discouraging a few others as well as adding private jokes and a few little drawings :P
