Mrs. Funnel Cake's Picture
Mrs. Funnel Cake, Zürich, Switzerland/Columbus, Ohio Age and Occupation: 24, Visual Communication Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Application Engineer Engagement Date: May 30, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Catholic church followed by a botanical conservatory About Me: I'm an American designer who moved to Switzerland for love after a fairytale beginning at the top of the Eiffel Tower. I love travel, photography, museums, learning German so I can speak with my mother-in-law, cooking (eating), cuddling, and I'm not afraid to try something new even if it terrifies me. My Swiss/Brazilian man and I are both down to earth people planning a traditional Catholic wedding in my hometown with some quirky cultural exceptions to reflect our different backgrounds. We look forward to celebrating with friends and family from all over the world in a classic, sophisticated fusion of heritage and love.
About Mrs. Funnel Cake

Like everything else, I began my engagement ring search on the internet to get a feel for what I would like and how much it might cost before we headed to shops. As a newbie bride-to-be, of course I stumbled onto the Tiffany site first, of all things.

I choked at the prices, but it’s Tiffany, so what do you expect? I actually figured that the overpriced Tiffany prices would be more in line with Swiss prices than anything else. After a little while browsing, I realised that I thought a single stone was a little boring for me.

I stumbled upon this beauty and figured I would want something similar. I mentally noted the $1500 price point for the modest .5 carat size, and figured this would be a starting price point for jewelry in Switzerland.

Mr. Funnel Cake did not do any homework before we went out to look, and you can imagine his utter shock when they placed a similar .5 carat multi-stone ring on my finger and told us it was about 1500CHF. He started sweating and I told the jeweler we’d think about it so we could excuse ourselves and leave.

Out of the store…Mr. Funnel Cake confessed he had NO idea a ring would cost this much. He admitted he didn’t have this much available for a ring budget at the moment, and if I wanted a ring like that he would have to save up for it. He might have even gone on a little rant about how it makes much more sense to pay for an expensive watch, because he can appreciate the engineering in crafting them.

So why don’t you just be patient and wait Miss FC?

Well, at this point, I was booked for a flight home to the US in a month to attend my brother’s wedding and I wanted to have my “real ring” in time to show the whole family. It would be the only time I would see them before our own wedding 18 months later, so I reeeaally wanted to be able to show them the ring when they would all ask to see it.

I told Mr. Funnel Cake I could help pay for the ring. We could even go halfsies if he wanted. I thought this was fair since he wasn’t even expecting to buy an engagement ring in the first place. But he flat out refused. He said, “No, this engagement ring is a gift from me to you. I will pay for all of it.” He wouldn’t even accept if I would help him pay for it while he was saving up for it… he didn’t want me putting any money down for my ring at any point.

With Mr. Funnel Cake still traumatised by his first ring quote, we continued on our increasingly uncomfortable search for the ring.

Were you surprised by the costs of rings?

I wasn’t, not really. My FI had a ring of his grandfather’s and used one of the diamonds out of that, went to a local jewellery store and had one made–it cost about $500, and with 14K rose gold!

Will Blue Nile ship internationally to you? We got my ring from there and the prices are wonderful, and we had no sales tax. Not sure how it would work with importing something so expensive though through customs. Of course, you could always have it shipped to your home and get it while you’re there… You could at least speak with him about getting a lesser expensive starter ring with a gemstone you like and then wearing it as a right hand ring later! (or, uh, left hand ring if the Swiss are like other Europeans who wear their wedding rings on the right hand)

We were not surprised. FI brother got engaged 2 yrs before we did and after learning what his brother paid, FI knew he was going to pay close to that amount oor more to get the type of ring he wanted to get me. And given the size and quality of my ring we knew it would not be cheap lol

Aww, poor Mr. FC! It’s so cute how adamant he was about paying for your ring.
We weren’t very surprised with prices cause I used to work in a jewelry department and I love to online gawk at jewelry (especially Tiffany). Plus I would send Mr. P ’suggestions’ of rings that were like 25k+ just as a joke. He did not find them funny. :)

Completely shocked. I did not look at rings before we became engaged and I wasn’t a huge fan of the ring at first, thought I might want a little more ‘bling’. After doing a few innocent searches of new settings, I picked my jaw off the floor and developed a new-found love for the gorgeous ring that my FI picked out…

@Lone Star: I started looking a lot at blue nile as well, but Mr. Funnel Cake was adamant that he wanted to buy from a concrete store because he doesn’t trust buying stones/precious metals online. :/

@honeymead: wow, good deal!

@Miss Pony: lol, Miss P, why ever didn’t the Mr think $25k is funny? :P

@lmoss78: aha, glad you like your original ring. It’s crazy how expensive they are, right?

I was initially very against Blue Nile myself. But I did some research, including looking at the better business bureau and read up on them, and I was glad I did. My ring is amazing, was purchased for way below value, is appraised and insured correctly, and their customer service is great. Both FI and I bought our wedding bands off of there too (courtesy of a 10% off coupon email!). I mean, blue nile does returns for free (even engraved wedding bands!), so if you take it and have it appraised and it doesn’t appraise for what it’s supposed to, you can return! I had a pave diamond fall out in my setting and they replaced it and repaired for free within a week! They also do free resizing for the first year. Also, I found concrete jewelry stores felt much more like they’d sell me something fake than Blue Nile (just the pushy vibe, you know?) If Blue Nile sold fake things, they wouldn’t be in business– nor traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange!

@Lone Star: Yeah I would totally buy from them! But alas, I cannot convince the man where to spend his money. :( He wanted to see it and hold it in his hands…

Honestly, I knew that engagement rings were expensive, and I just couldn’t justify making my future husband spending that much on a piece of jewelry.
So that’s ultimately why we decided on an Asha. I didn’t want to have that ‘we’ll upgrade someday’ looming over our heads if he got a CZ, so an Asha was a great option. So we were able to get my dream ring sooner than I expected! :)

Aw. Well, the ring is his deal, so I’m sure he’ll find something lovely, and it’s quite right to do what he wants. It’s very honorable for him to want to do it himself. Perhaps then a nice placeholder silver ring to show to the family! :)

Not engaged yet but I am a total gawker at all things sparkly and shiny, and I just think the prices are cah-ray-zy!

The BFs mom has already said she would be more than willing to chip in and help with the cost of a ring, but I still can’t get over the price tag, no matter who is paying. The one I want on the low end is $3000. I always like the expensive things.

Jewelry prices have always amazed me! I never could believe that a simple white gold chain could cost $150! However, my concept of jewelry and jewelry prices have been completely altered. My fiance’s mother is a customer jewelry coordinator for a west coast jewelry company, and I have got to see how inflated jewelry costs truly are. For example, I have a beautiful custom made ring that is has a nearly flawless 1 carat princess cut solitaire diamond on a hand engraved white gold band. My fiance got my ring for $2,100, but if someone would have ordered the same ring through the jeweler it would have been an $8,000 ring. Further, I selected two half eternity wedding bands (I have a thing with symmetry) that are 1/2 carat each. These bands retail for $1,250. We got both rings for $615! Yes, we got two bands for half the price of one! Then my fiance’s ring matches my hand engraved band but is a 6mm band. His ring would retail for $3,800, but we got it for $1,100 (don’t ask me why a man would want a ring that expensive- even at cost!!).

I guess the moral of the story is that we all pay entirely WAY to much for jewelry! Jewelry companies are marking jewelry up by as much as 6 times the cost!

My Swiss-French fiance bought me that exact Tiffany engagement ring, and even though I look down and am sometimes shocked that I’m wearing a Kia or Hyundai on my finger, he says he’s never regretted buying it. For himself, or me.

They are the shiniest diamonds I’ve ever seen (vvsi 1, color E), and I love the smaller 3 stones and the more vintagey look. they are more dramatic and beautiful than my girlfriends gigantass solitaires.

My guy picked a similar cut and style for 1600 I was totally shocked and felt guilty of the price!

I was not shocked, as I have always had a penchant for shiny, expensive things. Mr. LK, on the other hand, nearly fell out of his chair when we first started shopping online…. and then quickly adjusted his ring budget accordingly.

Lovely pick!

I was not surprised at all, he on the other hand adjusted himself like Mr.LoveKiss.

Very pretty! To be honest, we have nil in the budget for our bands and I have not even begun to look (I’m afraid of sticker shock)

Ha! Patient Cat is cracking me up!!! I had no idea what engagement rings cost when Sparks and I were talking about our future. To this day, he refuses to even HINT about how much mine was. I think it’s very gentlemanly of him ;)

Oh my god, this was SO me. Engagement ring searching even brought us to tears. I wanted something heirloom quality but also something that was within price range. FH got hung up on diamond clarity rating.

We ended up finding a beautiful vintage diamond ring with a great center stone and amazing setting. The center diamond, had we purchased it alone, would have been about 8000 US. Since we got it vintage, the setting is platinum and the whole ring cost us 1700 US out of pocket. WIN!!
