Fickle about Favors

June 30th, 2011 @ 3:05 pm by Mrs. Macarons

Macs and I have spent a lot time brainstorming ideas for our favors. We’ve tried to include little bits of us throughout our wedding and hoped to do the same with small tokens of edible appreciation.

In an ideal world our wedding would be budget less. Pierre Hermé would send his amazing macarons right to my doorstep, perfectly packaged and ready to grace our tables. Macarons were a memorable part of our Bunnymoon and the reason I chose my moniker.

Mrs. Perfume seemed to have great success with hers, but after reading about Mrs. Turtle and Mrs. Rainbow’s attempts I wasn’t quite ready to give it a shot. Miss Bacon was planning on making them too, until she found an amazing baker that didn’t sell them for an arm and a leg. I still haven’t let go of this idea entirely but for now it’s on the back burner.

Our next thought was potted herbs since both of us have pretty successful green thumbs. Ms Seahorse grew Basil plants from clippings and seemed totally doable given the rate our garden seems to be growing.

But Macs brought up a good point with our guests. Most of them are from out of town and we didn’t want to risk our plants being confiscated by the TSA. Hrmph.

So where does that leave us for now? Tea. Nonperishable and easy to transport, it’s the simplest of our options so far.

Mrs. Parfait has a thing for bunnies and found some adorable silhouette tea tins which served as great inspiration. I’m not going to lie, my inner girlie girl would have demanded bunny shaped marshmallows but I have a feeling it’s about as labor intensive as macarons, and not exactly guy-friendly.

While I’m not totally in love with the idea, we’re quickly running out of time. If only there was a magical wedding favor fairy that could come up with something amazing and take this responsibility off my plate.

How long did it take you to decide on favors?

OMG Bunny shaped Marshmallows!! The macarons weren’t so hard, though. Definitely try your hand at them before throwing that option out. I believe in you!

You know they make bunny shapped marshmallow peeps, right?

A pair of these repackages in a clear confection box with ribbon would be the sweetest (pun intended, sorry!)

Trader joes sells macarons- $5 for a box of 12. They are kind of small so we wrapped two in tulle and tied a ribbon around it for our favors. They are delish and super cheap!

We went back and forth on different edible favors and ended up making the chocolate favors for our guests. They took some time, and my mom did want to just give up at one point, but I think our guests loved them.

We’ve been engaged for 15 months now and I’ve changed my mind on favors about 30 times (no exaggeration). It’s one of those elements that has stumped me for a long time. I think macaron favors would be so cute for your wedding though!

I knew we wanted something edible but have gone from palmiers to candy to homemade cake pops. I haven’t decided 100% but I am leaning towards Turkish Delight candy because I am half turkish….and such a delight to boot! ;)

The favors were the very first thing I settled on! Right after we got engaged I jumped online looking for inspiration, and found it with pictures of tree saplings. The saplings were wrapped on the bottom with burlap, a ribbon tied around, with a tiny tag attached with the wedding date and initials of the couple and care instructions on the back. It was perfect for us because we wanted an outdoor wedding among the trees, overlooking the ocean. AND, my brother and his wife are tree-planters up here in Canada during the summers. We also loved the idea of our favors lasting so long after the wedding, and them being symbolic of our love as they grow big and tall. Then there’s the environmental aspect too. Other than the venue it’s really the only thing we’re totally sure about at this point!

Ooh, plants are such a cute idea. Too bad TSA’s a b#&*@.

I’m sure you’ll decide on something lovely! IMO, favours aren’t a deal breaker on a good wedding so I’m sure your guests will like whatever you do. We just picked buckeyes to honour my alma mater so it was a really quick decision. :)

I’m a BM for my friend’s wedding in a few weeks, and for her shower we did potted herbs (basil and oregano) as the favors. My roomie and I took home 1 of each, and within a week the basil died. I’ve talked to a few people with more of a green thumb than us and they said basil is hard to grow - just a word of warning if you go that route!

@firebugj16: That’s odd, I’ve actually found basil to be quite easy to grow. Maybe the plants were too cramped in the pot they came in? I’ve also heard they don’t like to be overwatered, so if they came in a pot without any drainage, that might be why…

@JenniferG: We ordered the plants from greenhouse via online, and apparently the 1st batch of basil were dead when they were delivered so this was our 2nd batch! maybe the greenhouse has really bad basil?

@firebugj16: That could be it. Mine I’ve grown from seed that I got at Target, actually. :)

@ebmarshall: Aww, I’d hate to inconvenience you or someone else with something like that. I just ran across a blog post about how some Super Targets are selling them, so I’m going to give that a shot. Thanks for the offer though!
