About Mrs. Ladyfingers

The vendors have been selected and the down payments all made. The dress has been purchased and is sitting in Bridesmaid Esquire’s closet. The makeup and hair artist has been booked. My workout routine and better-eating regimen has definitely given me a body I am happy about.

There’s just one itty, wittle problem.

A Hands-Off Approach to Wedding-Day Beauty (or, Don’t Be So Picky) : wedding beauty saint petersburg Lf1 lf1

Personal photo…obviously.

Yeah. My hands.

(Warning: potentially nauseau-inducing detail below, depending on your level of squeamishness)

See, I have this nasty habit of picking at the skin around my nails and my cuticles. I do it without even noticing. This photo was taken on a pretty good day, actually, but when I get nervous or stressed out (like, oh, how I’ll be more and more over the next five months?), I pick and pick and often get bleedy parts and scabs around my nail beds.

Gross.

I’ve tried the tricks: Putting stuff on my nails that tastes gross (only works for nail-biters, and while I do bite the skin, too, I’m not above just picking with my nails). Getting manicures (I just ruin them without regard for how pretty they look or how much I spent on them). Sitting on my hands. Short of wearing mittens until the big day, I’m at a loss.

My bridesmaids have suggested I get a manicure a couple of days before, but I don’t see how that can help. If I’ve been going at it pre-manicure, my fingers will already look like Freddy Krueger got a hold of them by the time I actually get my nails did. So right now I’m trying to stay hands off about it. It’s hit or miss.

Did you have any physically damaging bad habits pre-wedding? Did you successfully curtail them, at least until after you were married? How?

O I do that too! It’s awful and so gross. Sometimes I’ve been able to stop for a month or so, and constantly moisturizing my hands helps sometimes because there isn’t so much to pick. Hope something works for you because if so, I’ll steal the idea.

Good luck!

Go get a manicure… Then grab some cuticle oil and carry it with you. This will soften the nail bed area and the skin around it, making it less tempting to bite. Remember you want PRETTY nails for your day!

Get manicures on a regular basis (weekly) because they will trim any excess skin off and leave you with not much to mess with. Other than that, take Biotin daily. It’s a vitamin that helps your nails become strong and it also helps your skin and hair (bonus!). Lastly, Sally Hansen makes a great vitamin cuticle oil. Cover your nails and cuticles all day every day. The good news is that you can use this as often as possible. Not only will it make your nails nice and soft and pretty, they will be too slippery to pick. Good luck!! :)

I have always been one to bite my nails but especially pick at the skin around them, nervous habit. Prior to my wedding I made a conscious effort to use hand cream to hope smooth my cuticles and while they didn’t end up half bad the day of (and looked ok in pictures) I hadn’t actually kicked the habit. Fast forward to- well about 3 weeks ago - something happened and i just stopped. I noticed my nails growing out a bit and got excited. Since then I will sit down 2 or 3 times a week and give myself a home manicure and throw some clear polish on them. im seriously amazed at how well i have done - now that i see how pretty my nails can be i hope i don’t resort back to my bad habit of biting and picking. its a habit i never thought i could kick.

I have a nasty habit of biting my nails and picking. Manicures helped get my hand back in shape, but didn’t help with the biting. It wasn’t until I got acrilic (sp?) nails that I was able to stop. They are much harder to bite through and even when I do, it hurts my teeth. They took a little bit to get used to but it helped!

@MrsCopeland: Good call on the Biotin and the cuticle oil! Weekly manicures aren’t going to happen right now, but I should be better about doing them at home :)

@totheislnds: Glad to hear it - I did start polishing my nails on a regular basis, just a muted color, and it’s actually helped a bit!

I have the same problem! I’ve just been trying to be mindful of when I’m doing it, but if I’m stressed or bored, forget it! I started using cuticle oil every day (Mango Magic from Sally Beauty, which smells ah-ma-zing) but I still get hangnails. My nails have started peeling too, so I’m going to get some Biotin this weekend. I hope that helps!

I do this too, and used to also be a nail biter :( but what helps me is keeping nail clippers in my purse… whenever I have a little hangnail or dryspot that I find myself picking at, I clip it with the nail clippers. And yes, like others say moisturize moisturize moisturize!!

You know what works?? I used to have issues with this. Then i started using a cuticle nipper. http://www.amazon.com/Earth-Therapeutics-Cuticle-Nipper/dp/B000S9T7RU
If you use one of those every time you go to pick (but multiples if you have to for your desk @ work, purse, etc) and just make a clean nip, theres nothing there to pick at and you don’t have the blood!
IT WORKS!

I do it too ugh. The best way to get out of the habit is to go for regular manis (which sucks b/c it gets expensive) or start doing your nails yourself. The nail polish can be a reminder to stop mid- pick/bite. Also the little bits of nail polish flecked everywhere gets so annoying. It helps me a bit. I just have to actively make the effort to quit it. Goodluck!

OMG–I do the same thing. It’s such a bad (nervous) habit of mine, and it can be stupidly painful. Having a cuticle nipper definitely helped, and I also make sure to use super moisturizing hand cream (I like Neutrogena because it doesn’t feel greasy afterward).

i have the same problem, I do manicures and am always armed with cuticle nippers it does a lot less damage than pulling or picking. The other trick I use is CND solar oil.

I have several and put it on a couple times a day when I get the urge to pick. It makes your cuticles and nails so much healthier there’s less to pick and it smells really good! And its great for your skin too, i brush it on my nails and cuticles let it sit for a while then add a little hand cream or lotion and rub it all in.

I always been bad at this. I’ve recently started just keeping a tube of eucerin intensive hand creme at my desk, and any time I’m tempted at work I just put lotion on my hands. I find it cuts down on the urge.

I just can’t afford weekly manicures or I would do that. I also play lots of sports so my nails are always short-that pretty much cured my old nail biting habit.

OMG I do the EXACT SAME THING to my skin/cuticles!!! So in that respect, you are totally not alone. I also have recently attempted to stop biting my nails. (Nervous habit)
I’ve been doing fairly well, but my nails always have jagged edges, even after filing, and they are so thin, they break all the time!

My Fiance has this habit. I’m so worried about pictures of our hands together at the wedding :-(

You’re DEFINITELY not alone, I do this as well. I’m embarrassed by it because I don’t realize I do it! I try so hard to quit, too. I hope I can stop before my wedding. My post-engagement hand grabbing from relatives/friends was stressful for me because I didn’t want them to see my fingers-I can only imagine a wedding! :(

I pick at my nails and the skin around my nails. all.the.time. I have gotten a little better but they are still no where near “wedding ready”. I plan on getting my first mani soon and am going to get acrylics for the big day. I also have a habit of playing with my hair- like really bad. It has broken off and won’t grow out in certain places b/c I’ve damaged it so badly :( I thought this would stop after I got engaged b/c I’d be conscious of having an upcoming wedding, but it hasn’t helped. I just hope it can be hidden when I get my up-do for the big day.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize… Try Shellac nail polish when you get your next manicure. It lasts for weeks! It stays beautiful with out chipping. Hopefully, having beautiful nails will curb your picking habit! It works for me. I keep looking at my nails and I can’t believe they are mine!

@Misslizzy: This made me giggle! I’ve got blisters on my fingers ;) Not bad as a last-ditch effort!

@spitfire229: Aww, that stinks when it’s something you can’t control :(

@kaynotsee: I feel you. My fingers used to be SOOOOO much worse - I would have red bleed marks down the side of practically every nail, and cuticles just EVERYWHERE. It’s a bit better, but it’s taken time.

I’m loving all the product and technique recommendations - keep ‘em coming!
