You Can Ring My Bell

July 1st, 2011 @ 1:49 pm by Mrs. Ladyfingers

I’m having ring issues.

High-class problem, right?

My engagement ring is perfect. It was my mother’s, and while for a very long time I wanted my grandmother’s ring (also handed down to me) as my engagement ring, when Mr. Ladyfingers got down on one knee with this shiny, wide, yellow band and sparkly marquise-cut diamond, I knew it was meant to be. The ring and I, that is—I already knew that Mr. Ladyfingers and I were meant to be. I’d told him all along to ask my dad for my grandmother’s ring and he did, but my dad gave him my mom’s ring. Whether he heard wrong or what I don’t know, but I love my unique ring; the fact that it makes my mother a part of the planning process even when she can only be here in spirit only makes it even more special.

Now, the wedding ring.

I have been all over the place with this wedding-ring decision. First, I wanted a thin band. Then, I wanted a still-thin-but-a-bit-wider channel-set band. A plain band would just make too much gold on my hand, and anything too wide would make things a bit impractical on my ring finger.

Then, I decided I wanted a white gold ring and to simply store away the engagement ring as a keepsake.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized I love yellow gold. It looks best on me. I wear it in most of my other jewelry. It looks, to me, more “vintage” and “antique” than white gold. And I really do want to wear both my band and my engagement ring on the same hand. Forever.

I also like unique, obviously. My inspiration pics run the gamut from simple but one of a kind to common but a bit flashier.

After all this internet research, I fully realized one important thing about myself: I am tactile. I need to be WITH my options, in their presence, looking at them in a store. I need to try them on and test them with my e-ring and without. Mr. Ladyfingers would be easy—but I might drive both of us a little nuts in our wedding-ring search.

Do you have an e-ring that was not part of a wedding set? Was it difficult for you to envision what you wanted? And did you end up with something far from what you’d originally envisioned?

I’m all over the place when it comes to my ring!My engagement ring is an antique piece that belonged to my great aunt.

My mother gave FI her grandmother’s ring as well as a diamond solitaire that she doesn’t wear anymore. FI is having granny and my mothers ring made into a new piece with a matching wedding band. But I’m really attached to my engagement ring and I go back and forth with just keeping it, having it re-shanked and getting a band to go with it. OR Having FI design me a new set. I can’t decide.
I think that since my engagement right isn’t really that ‘flashy’ I will keep to wear when we travel!

My ring is also a vintage ring and all the rings I loved online I HATED in person! It was hard to find one that felt right with the vintage style, but I found it! (I got really sick of ring shopping- it wasn’t as fun as I thought it would be-but worth it!) I urge you to go and try on as many rings as you can until you find something you love! Good luck!

My MIL has almost that exact same ring - she has an oval diamond instead. She has 2 bands that are the ones with diamonds on them, not in them. If that makes any sense.

I love that you can have a piece of your mom with you while wedding planning. I think trying on bands to see what you like with it is a great idea so you can see and feel how they will be on your finger.

Man, I had the hardest time envisioning what I wanted, even after we’d ordered my ring! I couldn’t for the life of me picture what it was going to look like, and I was terrrrrrifieddddd.

I love the idea you are going with for you ring, personally I dont think I would add any other diamonds to the ring it may be to much. I am going thru the same thing with my ring. I wanted black and white diamonds and we couldnt find any e-rings that i liked. We ended up picking out one from the gem stone section and using that instead. I love it except my problem now is what do i put with it for the wedding band? since it is a square cut ring and the enitre ring/band is covered with diamonds I figured i woud just continue the theme and get a channel set white diamond band. Hope it looks alright. Good luck with yours i do agree that you should go try stuff on with your ring to make sure it is perfect!!

I had issues with this too! My ring was FI’s grandmother’s ring and I had a lot of trouble finding something to go well with it. We ended up getting one custom made in the jewelry district.

I love that he proposed with your mom’s ring! I agree that it would probably be best to go in and try some on with your e ring.

I love that you are usuing your mom’s ring. It is gorgeous. And you could always later get a right hand ring. As for the band, I REALLY like the band in the third picture. My ring was not part of a set, however, I am having a jewely make a band that matches my engagement ring. My engagement ring is a pretty simple style though. But I am sure any jeweler could do the same for you. Good luck!

the ring is beautiful, ladyfingers, and im sure so very special to you. i am actually probably not getting a wedding band. i wear pretty simple jewelry, and i really like my engagement ring by itself. have you ever thought of just wearing it solo, or are you set on a band?

It was terribly difficult to envision what I wanted! I don’t know why I didn’t even think about getting a set… they just aren’t available or sold in Switzerland and FC didn’t want to buy online. Took me months to find something!

I LOVE your e-ring. It must be so absolutely meaningful and special to you because of your mother. So beautiful! I’m sure what you’ll get looks great together. :)

@organicgal: Thanks! I thought about it, but I’d like a band to tie the old in with the new - I want to have a piece of the past, but also a token of the future. :)

My e-ring is a big honking ruby in a vintage-style white gold setting with diamonds. The current plan is to get a super-simple white gold or platinum wedding band and make the e-ring a right-hand ring. I adore the ruby ring, but it gets in the way when I’m knitting and cooking.

Like oatmealpie my e-ring is a combination of rubies and a diamond (looks like a flower) and I will be moving it to my right hand and keeping my wedding band solo on my left. My wedding band looks like a diamond-rope braid, so it’s a statement piece like my e-ring.

Your ring is so unique! I knew what I wanted, tried it on in real life, done and done. Hope you get the perfect wedding band!
