Mrs. Marmalade's Picture
Mrs. Marmalade, Norwalk, CT/Raleigh, NC Age and Occupation: 27, Administrative Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Army Officer Engagement Date: December 31, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2011 Venue: Old Cadet Chapel/Highlands Country Club About Me: I'm a Tri-State area "lady," through and through. A big chunk of my life has been split between NYC and Connecticut, and I'm finally heading down south to live with Mr. Marmalade. Our long distance relationship has been one adventure after the next, we've spent time in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia, thanks to his military career. Next to Mr. Marmalade, my loves include live music, useless trivia, shoes, design, and my crazy half-tiger kitty, Oliver. I have a passion for food and wine, and I've been known to travel long distances to get my hands on the best meals. I come from a tight-knit big fat Greek Ecuadorian family---we're loud, we talk with our hands, and we spend hours talking loudly with our hands over large meals. I'm going to miss them so much as I pack up and begin my life, far away from home. But with Mr. Marmalade by my side, I'm ready to take on whatever may come. Next up: our wedding!

I (Heart) Sleeves

July 1st, 2011 @ 11:38 am by Mrs. Marmalade

I do. And until I started thinking about most things in terms of “wedding,” that thought never crossed my mind. But I have a clear preference for wedding gowns with sleeves. I pushed for a dress with a sleeve, any sleeve (I only tried on strapless dresses that we could add cap sleeves to), as did my Yiayia. What does that mean? Great minds think alike?

Well, The Gloss put together a slideshow of some of their favorite gowns (and brides in gowns) with sleeves. Here are some of my favorites.

Of course! Ms. Hepburn herself. Sigh…

Princess Grace: her bridal ensemble is now iconic. She is the quintessential bride right here. And I just learned that she, too, carried lilies of the valley down the aisle. How cool is that?

And now for something a bit more modern:

This beauty from Jenny Packham’s Spring 2011 line features a romantic cap sleeve.

I (Heart) Sleeves : wedding raleigh wedding dress Bridal2 bridal2

This dress from Dolce & Gabana’s Spring 2011 ready-to-wear collection is not technically a wedding dress. But the delicate lace and flower appliques would be perfect for a short-dress bride, don’t you think?

I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to seeing more dresses with sleeves coming off the runway. Are there any styles of dresses that you love?

Sleeves are a MUST for me and it has been such a hurdle in the dress hunt. I get a blank stare when I go into some smaller bridal shops and have actually been turned away from one when they said that they “don’t do sleeves…ever”.

oooooh, gorgeous gowns!!!!!
I love love love looooove corset backs. But, of course, the gown I have, doesn’t have a corset back *le sigh*. Ah, well, can’t have it all, right?
I also love anything that shows off my back. I have a very pretty back, I love my back, and if a certain BM tells me YET AGAIN I should have it tattooed, the gloves are comin’ off! LOL!

I have to say, when Kate Middleton stepped out of the hotel on her wedding day my first thought was HURRAY, SLEEVES ARE BACK!!! Looking forward to seeing lace sleeves appear everywhere in the next year or so when I start my dress hunt :-) Is anyone else thinking of getting a strapless dress and adding a lace bolero? I’ve been swooning over this dress lately: http://blog.webboda.es/modelo-Pergola-costura-pronovias-2012/
Totally agree with the choice of Grace Kelly, she was so beautiful *sigh*

Love Princess Grace’s gown! I am also wearing a lace bolero with my gown: http://ebridalsuperstore.com/ProductSearchResults.asp

THANK you for this post. I’m trying to find a sleeved dress that I like (otherwise, figuring out how to pull off a sweater/bolero and believe it) and there are usually maybe one, two styles. I’ve even tried going to “modest” Orthodox Jewish and LDS sites and they’re just so . . . plain. If anyone knows of good sleeved dresses, please post! <3.

It seems that every time I see a wedding dress on a blog that I l-o-v-e, it’s always a Latter-Day Saints wedding requiring sleeves……but I NEVER see a great sleeved dress in person. Where are they hiding them?

I am SO with you on this. I wanted sleeves so badly on my dress! There’s something so timeless and chic about it. Loving your taste, Marmalade :)

I’m having the seamstress add cap sleeves to my dress. Hopefully it will work, if not, I’m doing a bolero. I’m with you - sleeves are best!

I love sleeves as well, it was soo difficult finding a suitable sleeved dress. I just had to get the Justin Alexander that I saw. Everyone thought the dress was brilliant.

It is nice for new brides to have her (Kate) usher in more of a demand for them. I know it was difficult finding them prior to April 2011!!! But I was lucky…

I never really liked sleeves, but I think you’re going to be in luck because of the royal wedding. I bet there are going to be a ton of new dresses with sleeves now!

I have two friends who want sleeves on their dresses. I love keyhole backs….but my dress doesn’t have one. I also love flower details…my dress DOES have that, yay!

I thought I was the only one not crazy about the current “everything is strapless” dress movement :) Even short sleeves would be good but that’s sooooo hard o find

I completely agree with you on this one, and luckily it looks like popular culture and design might be headed in that direction. Thanks to Kate Middleton and Bella Swan (*cough, Twilight), I think that the sleeve is going to make a greater appearance in stores! Good luck on your search, can’t wait to see what you find!

@Oxfordnerd: @Oxfordnerd: I actually just tried the Pronovias Pergola - the dress is divine, but for some reason I’m not crazy about the shrug/bolero with it. I think I might try to have something made from an Etsy seller to match because the one sold with the dress is just a little… off.

I’m right there with you ladies on this one! Where are they hiding the dresses with SLEEVES!?!?! Does anyone know?

Sleeves are just so classy, elegant and timeless! If anyone finds the stash, let me know!! :-)
