Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich's Picture
Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich, Washington, DC/Cape May, NJ Age and Occupation: 28, School Counselor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 40, Collegiate Athletics Engagement Date: March 27, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Congress Hall Hotel About Me: I am a school counselor who spends my day wrangling children and my nights attempting to be creative with wedding projects. My enthusiasm for each of these activities far surpasses my skill. Thank goodness Mr. Cucumber Sandwich is there to pick up the pieces and be the voice of reason about my DIY tries. I have an obsession with terrible romantic comedies (‘From Justin to Kelly’ anyone?, anyone?!?), competitive Scrabble play, and hot dogs. I could eat astronaut ice cream for every meal and can’t seem to resist buying more shoes. Our wedding is going to be a true hodge podge of semi-destination, tradition, Yuengling, New England charm, with just a dash of ‘Jersey Shore’ thrown in. It has been six years in the making and I can’t wait to marry my best friend.
About Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich

When we left off, Mr. CS was fading fast and couldn’t believe we had two more venues to visit that day. With the help of a little seaside fudge and the promise of an adult beverage, Mr. CS trudged on. He is such a trooper. Our next stop was the Hotel Alcott.

This was a beautiful venue and perfect for our price range. They were super accommodating, and almost every upgrade you could want for a wedding was included in the package. Chiavari chairs, you got it! Table overlays, of course they are included. Had our hearts not been set on Congress Hall, this would have been a perfectly adequate place to have our wedding. There were a couple of downsides, though, but no venue is without fault (except Congress Hall!). Hotel Alcott didn’t really have a place to have the ceremony if we decided we wanted to have it on site instead of at the beach. They did have a courtyard, which was as tiny as it was cute. Also the ballroom seemed a little small even for our small-ish wedding.

After our visit to the Hotel Alcott, we carried on to Congress Hall. To say our visit was glorious would be an understatement. Krista, the event planner, was a dream. She immediately gave us a heartfelt congratulations on our engagement and asked to hear the story. Mr. CS was thrilled because those customer-service aspects are very important and telling to him. Enough hearing about my venue/Krista crush—bring on the pictures!

I H.E.A.R.T. you, Congress Hall. There was one more venue to go, though. Our quest was not over yet. The final day led us to the Southern Mansion.

This was by far one of the more beautiful wedding venues. It has exquisite gardens and would have needed very little decor. The tables would all be set up on the wraparound porch, but the porch is only wide enough for one table at a time, which might make it hard for guests to mingle. We wanted mingle-age.

Sadly, the dance floor was down a flight of stairs and in the basement. This would make it impossible for any of our ADA guests. Deal breakers. :( It was beautiful, though.

Back to the ferry we went, to compare notes and decide. It was kind of a one-sided debate, but I like to let Mr. CS think he has options.

Did your fiance need convincing on what your perfect wedding location would be? How much do you love Congress Hall!?!

My FI and I both settled on a venue because it was close to home. They ended up shutting down so we got to go searching for our perfect venue and after the freak put of my venue closing four months before my wedding I did not want to settle. I ended up getting a gorgeous venue called The Orchard, note: its brand new and GREAT prices and they too throw in almost everything!!! They have uplighting on site AND a photo booth so you dont have to mess with more outside vendors! Chivari chairs for the reception garden chairs for the ceremony, gorgeousness around every corner! I’m stocked. only downside is I have to push my wedding back. all in all not a big deal. I’m so excited!!!!!!

I LOVE your venue!!!! So gorgeous! But yeah, we both kind of decided on our venue–we originally wanted the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, which was waaayyy too expensive for a place that didn’t include anything, but wanted that style of place (spanish revival) so set to looking for other places, together. It was fun!

Oooo i recognize this venue from a wedding my photographer shot! its gorgeous!

if you are wearing a veil, be sure its fastened pretty well, in the pictures of the wedding I saw, it was so windy, the bride’s veil flew off her head right as she was heading back down the aisle!

LOVE those Tiffany walls and the checkorboard floors!!! You are right, Congress Hall is the way to go. I love the history involved. We were able to get married in a place that has a ton of family memories in it, and it was truly magical. Took a little convincing for the hubs, but once he saw how much it meant to me, he was sold

<3 Congress Hall. That seemed like an easy decision.

Ours was fairly easy. I went and looked and took pictures, as it is 15+ hours away from where we live. Then even though I had decided, came home, shared my experience and booked the place I wanted.

FI gets to see it for the first time in two weeks. It is nothing super special, but it fit our list of requirements and will be beautiful once decorated!
