Mrs. Ladyfingers's Picture
Mrs. Ladyfingers, Saint Petersburg, FL Age and Occupation: 30, Marketing Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Sports Writer Engagement Date: December 24, 2010 Wedding Date: November 2011 Venue: Palma Sola Botanical Park About Me: I hail from Oklahoma, he was born and raised in Long Island. Fate brought us together, and now we live in a cute little rental house with our nutty dog, and our aloof cat. We both love to read, watch movies, explore our town, and laugh like hyenas. When I’m not obsessively wedding crafting, I enjoy stalking style and decorating blogs, making collages and painting, napping, thrifting, rearranging our bookshelves, and being a total weirdo with my friends. Hi!
About Mrs. Ladyfingers

Mr. Ladyfingers and I had never been anywhere outside the continental United States, so when it came time to talk honeymoon, the world was literally our oyster (well, not literally…but figuratively, definitely). Initially, we didn’t think we’d be able to do a real honeymoon. At the time he proposed, I was going to school part time for interior design because I was really unhappy with my journalism job and needed a backup plan. We planned our wedding date around my school break as it was, and we would probably only have been able to swing a mini-moon at best.

Then, though, fate stepped in. I found a job I loved, left the job I’d been unhappy at, and decided to put school on hold. I’d done lots of soul searching, and as I took a break for spring term to get acclimated to the new job, I found I really didn’t miss it; while I’d enjoyed learning about interior design, I’d also learned that the business side of things didn’t appeal to me at all.

With no more part-time school, my schedule had opened up wide. Our overall budget was still on the low side, so we planned a weeklong trip to St. Augustine, somewhere neither of us had ever been but still within our state. It’s a very romantic spot, the oldest city in the United States, and seemed to fit our honeymoon bill.

(Fun fact #1: I often type too quickly and spell “honeymoon” “honeymood.” Freudian slip? Methinks so.)

Then, as so often happens with me, a thought popped into my head. “You know,” this thought said, “you guys should really look into cruises. They’re affordable and fun, and will take you places you’ve never been.” Sometimes my thoughts sound like Kathie Lee Gifford.

So we started doing some research. I did way too much research, confusing myself and Mr. Ladyfingers beyond belief. Norwegian seemed reasonable, but then I learned that many travelers were unsatisfied with the cruise line’s tendency to nickel and dime. Royal Caribbean was the cream of the crop, but a bit outside our reach. For a minute we considered Celebrity, but while it was more affordable than RC, it would still leave us with less money to play around with at the fancy non-inclusive restaurant or the fun shore excursions.

What did we finally end up with? Carnival! Yes, I read that there are a lot of kids on Carnival, and that it’s the more “budget” of the cruise lines—that uttered with a derisive tone by those who prefer a classier ride. But it seemed to suit us just fine, and we were able to book a seven-night cruise rather than five and get a balcony rather than an interior cabin.

So at some point post-wedding, we’ll be cruising the Eastern Caribbean seas, stopping at the Bahamas, St. Thomas, Grand Turk, and Puerto Rico. Woohoo!!!

(Fun fact #2: When applying for a passport, the official told me I got an A+ for filling everything out correctly. An A+! Man, did that ever please me.)

How did your honeymoon plans evolve? What did you end up with? Are you combo-ing a mini-moon with something more extravagant later? Or booking your ideal getaway right away?

We just did our 3rd Carnival Cruise for our honeymoon (Bahamas, St. Thomas, St. Maarten), and it was great! Cruises are definitely overlooked, but they’re such a budget-savy way to vacation. My bit of advice–I’ve seen the Royal Carribean’s biggest ship, and while it’s amazing and all, there’s no way you’d be able to do everything on it in a week! (ice skating rink, really?) That would just frustrate me!
Anyway, happy cruising! And make sure to book everything/sign everything with the name on your passport!

We took Carnival for our honeymoon too! It was a blast — wouldn’t have changed it. At first Mr. H was afraid it wasn’t going to be “classy” enough, but we got a nice suite and it was perfect. :)

We also did cruise and it was also our first time to even ride a cruise ship. I cannot forget that trip because we didn’t know that there would be a storm. So while traveling, I was half scarred of not getting back. But fortunately the storm settled and my one week vacation became a dream heaven.

i think a cruise is a great idea, esp for a first time out of the country! you’ll get to see a few places and maybe make yourselves a list of places to go back to if you really had a good time there! sure, carnival may be a bit cheesier than other cruise lines, but i think you will have a good time.

we wanted to go somewhere in the world neither of us had been. and because we’re getting married in the summer and wanted to go (far) out of the country, our choices were limited - and expensive - for where we could go in the middle of july. so we decided to wait until the fall, and we’re going to spain for 2 weeks! so excited! it will be not nearly as hot (and most importantly, nearly as tourist-ridden) in Sept, so it should be relaxing and fun. but because i refused to go straight back to work, we are going to a little place in the hudson valley for 2.5 days after the wedding, just to relax and decompress. there is a pool and good restaurants nearby, and maybe we’ll even go hiking one afternoon if we fee like it.

i hope you guys have a great cruise!

Carnival can be as kid friendly or not as you want it to be. There were never too many kids whenever I went.

Carnival ships are beautiful and very very classy. Not at all “budget” in the bad sense.

We’ve cruised twice with Carnival and thoroughly enjoyed them. Last time we had a balcony and it was SO nice… barely needed to leave the room it was so relaxing.

Enjoy your cruise–it’s like being in a floating resort!

We’re thinking about doing a cruise as well. My sweetie has never been on one and I think it would be a great way to travel relax and destress after the wedding day.

Sounds like doing your research really pays off! Congrats! If you have time while in St.Thomas I would highly recommend making a trip to St.John(St.Thomas’ little sister to the east). St John is my favorite place in the entire world!

Yay, so glad you guys will get to go on a honeymoon! I’ve heard of great things about Carnival from both folks with kids and without. I’m sure you guys will have a blast, and the two extra days and a balcony will be well worth it!

I took my 1st cruise a 2 years ago with Carnival and LOVED IT! The FI and I are thinking of cruise for the honeymoon since he’s never been on one.

And OMG so jealous you’re going to Grand Turk…that was my favorite stop. If you’re up for an excursion on Grand Turk, try the swimming with sting rays/snorkeling. Hands down the best ’swimming with sting rays/snorkeling’ option out of our options. Oh and buy your own snorkel gear (we got our at Wal-Mart) if using other peoples creeps you out!
