Mrs. Brooch's Picture
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.
About Mrs. Brooch

Are you ready, hive?

Ready to get up close and personal with the Brooch wedding? I’m dying to share our professional pictures with you and relive our amazing wedding day! It’s finally time! Here’s a sneak peek—the same one I saw during our honeymoon in Costa Rica—of our favors and first look:

I feel pure joy when I look at our photos, but I have to confess, that wasn’t always the case.

In all honesty, I was somewhat disappointed in our pictures at first. I’m not sure what I expected and my feelings may have had something to do with the great many weddings I’ve viewed online, but I was a little disenchanted.

I think I expected to see a different sort of wedding; someone else’s wedding? Maybe I expected to see a model bride, and not myself? Isn’t it funny how we imagine ourselves looking so much different than we actually do?

Then, to add insult to injury, we tried to submit our pro pics to a certain mainstream wedding blog. We knew it was a gamble, but I thought for sure nothing could change how I felt about our day. Then, we got rejected. Can you imagine? I felt pretty… well, rejected.

A few days passed and the pictures began to grow on me. In fact, I began to love them. Like, really love them. I printed off a few black and whites and hung a collage in the hallway of our house. Each day I walked past them, I began to fall more deeply and madly in love.

With the arrival of our thank you notes from Wedding Paper Divas, I finally had the ’ah ha’ moment I had been waiting on. I can honestly say, I was finally just as in love with our wedding as all the beautiful, featured ones I’d seen across the web.

I began to see past what wasn’t there, and focus on everything that was! The raving reviews that came from our family and friends helped a lot, too. Hearing their reactions, I realized my perspective was obviously tainted. How could it have not been after years of ogling at nothing but beautiful weddings?

And something else dawned on me! Weren’t we already featured on the BEST wedding website in the world (ahem, Weddingbee)? Not only that, but like so many of the other bees have declared…our day was not about the details, music, food, decor, or even pictures (believe it or not)! It was about love, family, friends, and fun, which were all abundant in the Brooch wedding!

I’ve decided to coin my recaps “Brooches Become One” in honor of this small revelation. That way, I read and remember the true meaning of our day before seeing any photos, and keep in mind that our wedding was, and still is,  about us become one. Nothing more, nothing less.

So let’s get this show on the road!

Did anything disappoint you after the wedding? Did you get over it? How?

SO happy to hear you’re loving your photos now! You’re absolutely right about how easily we can become disillusioned with a wedding, especially when exposed to so many staged photo shoots on certain wedding blogs.
I love your wall collage, by the way! And if I hadn’t already designed and printed our thank you cards, I would’ve had to make a collage of details and photos for ours as well. Great idea!

I was so afraid of hating my wedding photos - definitely due to the ‘pressure’ from the blog world. I’m so happy you’ve come to love yours! And I think your thank you cards look amazing - I especially love the tag line ‘you made our day’. It’s so true! Now I’m wondering if I expressed that clearly enough in our cards… hmm….

I was super disappointed in my DJ. I pictured it as a huge dance party and b/c my dj didnt play the type of music I requested, I didnt have the big dance party that I was expecting - although alot of people did dance, just not the whole crowd as I was expecting. I thought since everybody wasn’t dancing it meant they weren’t having fun (even though they told me they were)…Now almost a year later, I got over it by going to another wedding where they didnt have a big dance party either, but the wedding was still ALOT of fun.

First of all I love what you did with the B&W pics! I might steal your idea XD

Second, I did have a bit disappointment about our wedding. The thing is that I started wishing I had done some things differently and stuff like that. I was like “I should’ve invited these people”, “I should’ve used this kind of things in the reception”… thing like that. But in the end, as you said it’s all about two people becoming one and how much you love each other. In the end it’s about the marriage and not so much about the wedding XD

Oh my gosh… I really afraid of being let down by my wedding after having spent years viewing the most amazing weddings on the internet. I am so very happy to hear you have recovered from that sort of disillusionment. I think your wedding pictures are GORGEOUS and I totally think you look like a model bride. I can’t wait to see more!

I really understand this… even with my engagement photos, I was so critical over them at first, and then later realized, hey, these are awesome. Wedding photo blogs are a curse, honestly! Don’t give in to it!

I had a few pangs after the wedding about pics that were missing or details that weren’t perfect, then I remembered how I felt at the end of our reception. Just ridiculously happy. The truth is my wedding day was amazing, its only the time I spend scrutinizing it that makes me think otherwise.

I love that you worked a chivari chair into your thank yous!

I feel like I’ll be the same way with pictures. I think when you are so invested in something, planning down to the nitty-gritty, and seeing things come together {every day} it is hard to step back and see the big picture. When trolling wedding blogs of people you don’t know (usually) there is more of a WOW factor and a “ooooooooo good idea” lightbulb. Honestly your pictures look great from what you’ve shown. And if it’s the website we all think (know) you’re talking about they definitely get TONS of submissions. Nothing personal, I mean just look, you got chosen to be a Bee!
