Mrs. Ladyfingers, Saint Petersburg, FL Age and Occupation: 30, Marketing Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Sports Writer Engagement Date: December 24, 2010 Wedding Date: November 2011 Venue: Palma Sola Botanical Park About Me: I hail from Oklahoma, he was born and raised in Long Island. Fate brought us together, and now we live in a cute little rental house with our nutty dog, and our aloof cat. We both love to read, watch movies, explore our town, and laugh like hyenas. When I’m not obsessively wedding crafting, I enjoy stalking style and decorating blogs, making collages and painting, napping, thrifting, rearranging our bookshelves, and being a total weirdo with my friends. Hi!
About Mrs. Ladyfingers

For all my indoor accessorizing, I have been rather stuck on how to adorn the outdoor portion of our venue. We’ll be having the ceremony on the back lawn, and there’s a pretty large wooden deck with stairs leading down to that lawn. You go up the stairs, and you’re on an open deck, then a covered deck. That’s where our guests will have their cocktail hour before moving inside to sit and eat, then back outside to dance the night away on the covered deck.

See the deck rails in the back? That’s the area of decoration in question. Sorry it’s tiny. / Image via Palma Sola Botanical Park

While we’re marrying in a botanical park, I do want some decoration out there, even if it’s only lighting for those who might wish to take a romantic stroll onto the back lawn after dark. There are very bright Christmas lights already strung up by the venue on the covered deck, but once you go down onto the lawn, it’s awfully pitch black.

Initially, I was stuck on making string balls after stumbling upon a tutorial that made it look oh so easy with adorable results.

But then I started thinking about me, sitting in our hot-as-you-know-what garage, dipping string into glue paste, and becoming generally irritated. As cute as these are, there has to be a non- or semi-DIY alternative, right? I’m getting lazy here, folks.

So my mind immediately went to paper lanterns. Fun! Colorful! I could get them in different sizes and shapes in hot pink, yellow, and white and string them all around the back of the deck.

Thing is, number one, these suckers aren’t really cheap if you’re buying a bunch of them. I found ones I loved for $4.99 each (!?!) on one website, and then others for like 10 for $11. We would also have to buy LED lights, though, and I wasn’t quite sure how they’d look “hanging” since they wouldn’t hang straight down, if that makes sense. We could string them up to the railing, but they’d be lying against the slats.

But there is a happy medium—paper-lantern string lights! But still…not as inexpensive as I’d like and would require an outlet to plug them in.

So maybe the lights thing isn’t the best idea. Or maybe we could get some Christmas lights and string them around the back deck, assuming we could find an outlet to end them in. But I could still inject some color into the situation. What about bunting? I used to think it was a little casual for our wedding, but it’s all in the fabric choices and general execution, and it’s awfully charming—AND easy, AND cheap!

So to recap (because I know that was all super complicated, and also because I <3 pro and con lists):

String balls

Pros: Fun, unique, cheap, ability to make varied sizes for an eclectic look

Cons: Don’t light up, potentially messy, requires me to do crafts in my garage, high likelihood of stressing me out, might not hang well

Paper lanterns

Pros: Provides light to back lawn with addition of LED lights, can vary colors for as much of a pop as we want, can vary sizes

Cons: Expensivo, might not hang well, limited to the colors offered at the most affordable sources

Paper-lantern string lights

Pros: Provides light to back lawn, requires less of a financial outlay since there are many mini-lanterns per string, comes with lights so reduces cost of having to buy LEDs, colorful

Cons: Would require an accessible outlet, difficult to get the precise color combinations we want, still kinda pricey

Christmas lights

Pros: Provides light to back lawn

Cons: Limited to white lights so no color, requires accessible outlet, kinda boring and repetitive with the lights they already have strung up

Bunting

Pros: Colorful, fun, quirky, cheap, can get the exact color scheme and patterns I want, can do the project in front of my TV

Cons: Doesn’t light up

Well, I think we have a winner: Bunting it is! Now comes the shopping.

Do you agree? What kinds of decorations did you go with for your outdoor adornment? Did you find it difficult to make a decision? Were you happy with your choice?

I made a flag bunting for my outdoor wedding ceremony. I cut rectangles of fabric with different but complimentary patterns and used stitch witchery to adhere them to long lengths of brown twine. It made a big impact and looks great in pictures.

Here’s a pic of my bunting.

I’m doing the lighted lanterns. I actually bought a bunch of them from the dollar tree for $1 a piece. It was hard for me because I just wanted the green ones. But now I seen they have just plain white ones with the led lights in them. You could probably color them with a paint brush and some watered food coloring.

Hi there

For my Mums birthday I wanted to have paper lanterns to light our backyard and was very budgetconciuos, so I would propose the following to you:

- buy paper lanterns in all the colors and sizes you want here: http://www.asianimportstore.com/nylonlanterns.html

- light them with so called “throwies”. These are LEDs powered by batteries and you assemble them yourself (buy in bulk from ebay, 100 LEDs about 15$ and 100 batteries 10$, if you want to know which ones I bought, send me an email.)

- how to make throwies: http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/06/17/lighting-lanterns-with-led-throwies/ refer to Mrs Tiramisu (this is how I found weddingbee, searching for tutorials for throwies for the birthdayparty)

I prefer this option to the bunting one, as you mentioned the idea of the decoration is to provide lightning in the yard! I mean if xou have bunting, it looks beautiful during the day, but you can’t see it when its dark!

Cheers, Natalja

Whoohoo! I am here to assure you that you made the right choice.

Then again, I may be a bit biased.

If you go the paper lantern route….be careful which LEDs you purchase. I bought tons of ivory lanterns with LED lights and they had a blueish tint to them. Which, in turn, made the lanterns look purple. Long story short, I didn’t even use them :/

I’m with Miss Pony- I also heart pros and cons lists…especially on post-its. I also agree that bunting is a fabulous choice! I can’t wait to see the type of bunting that you choose to do!

I’m lazier than you: I would’ve left it up to my FI with a list of what each would cost! (What? it’s his wedding, too!!!)
LOVE the idea of the bunting!!!!! Can’t wait to see how it turns out!!!! :D

Oh my gosh this has been one of my hardest decisions!! I went back and forth just like you…and my decision was the yarn/string balls! I’ve had a successful first run and looking forward to the second. Excited to see your bunting, I heart bunting!

@Hänni: It looks great - good to know it worked out for you!

@s2bBradsWifey: That’s a great idea - or watercolor paint!

@Miss Bunting: Just a tad, but rightfully so ;)

@MrsCopeland: Oooh… good advice!

@tocarat: I love the string balls so, but I thought they might frustrate me - I loooove the way they look, though!

I got 100 battery operated paper lanterns at dollar tree. They only carry white in the late summer. Would solve the electricity issue.

You must not be a Christmas lover, lady! Christmas lights come in every color imaginable. And this time of year, they’re super cheap.

Hop on Google or Amazon and find some lights. If you have an outlet to plug them into, twinkle lights are a much simpler option than bunting. It doesn’t matter if the line is twisted or anything. Just keep extra bulbs on hand and you’re home free.

@Miss Hearty: Actually, Christmas if my favorite holiday! Christmas lights down here aren’t easy to find unless they’re multicolored or plain white. I wanted to incorporate grey into the scheme, and that wasn’t an option with Christmas lights. And I ultimately didn’t like the look and feel of Christmas lights for our event versus bunting. But for others considering Christmas lights, this is very good advice :) Thanks!

I feel kind of cool because you linked to me :)

I love those lantern things. We just did another one with them and I think they’re very atmospheric: http://www.kylehepp.com/2011/07/matrimonio-casas-del-bosque-maria-y-luis/
