Mrs. Balloons's Picture
Mrs. Balloons, Aspen, CO Age and Occupation: 24, Mass Communications graduate, Web Design student, & winery worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Engineer Engagement Date: July 10, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: The Sundeck at The Little Nell About Me: I'm a small-town Midwest girl planning an intimate mountaintop destination wedding complete with a huge DIY at-home reception. As an honors graduate fallen victim to the worst job market in history in my area, we're doing everything we can to still have the wedding of our dreams on a tighter budget. I currently enjoy working at a winery, but I'm lonnng overdue for a day job! I am: a big-time daydreamer, one of the pickiest eaters you'll ever meet, and a lover of pretty paper and awesome fonts. I'm a girly girl who loves to get dolled up, but also a country girl who loves to get muddy and go 4-wheeler riding. I also enjoy singing in the car, boating, going to concerts, the History Channel, carnival food, and going to watch St. Louis Cardinals baseball with my handsome engineer.

Stalking Craig

Craigs list, that is. Thanks to images like the ones below, I had my heart set on having some sort of antique- or vintage-looking desk or dresser at our reception.

Swoooon! I love furniture outside at weddings!

We don’t have any nifty vintage rental companies near where we live so I thought I’d try to find a cheap one at a garage sale or on Craigslist. I work every weekend which is when all the garage sales are, so that option was out. I scoured Craigslist for months, and let me tell you, vintage dressers and desks do not come cheap. I found countless gorgeous pieces that would have worked wonderfully, but Mr. B was not having it with the hefty price tags. I thought all hope was lost…or that I was just going to have to go buy one and pretend it cost much less than it did. :) My persistent stalking of Craigslist finally paid off, however, when I found a posting for a French desk that just said “make offer.” After going back and forth on negotiating price, we finally landed on an agreeable amount of $50.

It is an antique-ish white color & had accents of gold trimming. I liked the gold trim, but I wanted something more colorful like my original inspiration pictures. The picture above is after I painted the knobs a Tiffany blue color. I decided that I didn’t really care for the blue knobs, though so I decided to try something different.

Instead, I repainted the knobs pink & made the trimming blue; I liked the look of it much better so I continued with it…

And Tada! The final product:

I love, love, love it! I’m going to use it for our guest book table and  put cute vases of flowers in the hutch. I’d also love to have flowers coming out of a few drawers.

Anyone else find any wedding steals on Craigslist?

AWESOME!!!! You’ve done a great job painting it, too!!!
I actually have a desk REALLY similar to yours!!! Except mine doesn’t have the divided shelf & the “rail” is on the bottom shelf! Other than that, it could be my desk’s twin!!!

Love, love, love. Great job balloons. I love vintage looking furniture. I just painted an ugly floral table Tiffany blue! I painted it a gold/copper color first, then the blue. Then I took a fine grit sand paper and “sanded” the edges, and random parts, looks fab! :)

It looks great!! We fell in love with some engagement pics that had the couple posed on a vintage piano. We scoured craigslist for weeks until we found one for FREE! So we borrowed a friends truck and are the proud owners of a piano! Congrats - it looks lovely!
