Mrs. Seal's Picture
Mrs. Seal, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 25, Personal Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Sales and Support Specialist Engagement Date: December 12, 2009 Wedding Date: November 2011 Venue: Sts Peter and Paul Church/The Bently Reserve About Me: I am a goofy, wannabe crafty, well-intentioned Renaissance Woman (OK, perhaps "aimless wanderer" is a more aptly suited term for me, but hopefully you get the point)—basically I dabble in just about everything and pride myself in such. Without warning, I occasionally breakout into soulful improvised songs and interpretive dances and there's just no stopping me! As so many others before me, planning our wedding has unearthed a deep, intense passion for all things bridal and I secretly fear the day it will come to an end. Mr. Seal and I are quite the pair and life with him by my side is extremely rewarding—I am so thankful to have found him. Together we are planning a black-tie San Francisco affair for 250—light on the stuffiness and with lots of extra Seal-y flair.
About Mrs. Seal

…and no, I don’t mean wax versions of these Seals:

I mean these wax seals:

I gave you a all a sneak peek of our invites a few weeks back, and though I still can’t reveal the final product, I can tell you about the seals we’ve made for them.

We’re going the pocket-fold route and I long toyed with how we would keep that flailing little flap at bay. I truly and honestly don’t know where the wax seal inspiration stemmed from, I just recall waking up one morning firm in the decision that seals were the way to go. (This may or may not have been subconsciously influenced by my bee moniker.)

Despite my confidence, however, I found the thought of pouring hot wax onto our (not so cheap) invites extremely unnerving. So, I did as any savvy kid would do and logged onto the ’bee for some guidance-and guidance I found! Thanks to Mrs. Sewing’s awesome DIY tutorial post, I was introduced to the ingenuity of hot glue gun faux wax.

Going with faux wax had a few perks: 1) no mess on my invites, 2) I could make these bad boys far in advance and 3) I am super prone to burns and the further I stay away from open flames…the better. Seeing as how I couldn’t think of a single downside (perhaps other than to its minimal associated cost?) to using faux wax, I ordered some wax sticks and a monogrammed stamp from Nostalgic Impressions.

I invited FSIL Tracy over for a crafting date and we got to work.

Our tools of destruction!

I have to make mention (for any of you thinking of attempting this project) that using a glass casserole dish as your wax surface, as Mrs. Sewing did in the aforementioned tutorial, is totally the route to go. We first attempted using wax paper but this had some disastrous and frustrating results and lots of ripping was involved.

FSIL Tracy’s steady hand at work atop the casserole dish!

I’d say we spent a total of maybe an hour stamping these little guys and I now have a hearty stash just waiting to be adhered to our invites.

They, quite literally, look like gold!

Are you using seal stamps on your invites? Did you use traditional or faux wax?

They look great! How many seals did you make out of one glue stick?

this looks awesome! You have inspired me to maybe do the same…where did you get the supplies from? The M stamp will be perfect for me as well.

@spotdoe445: I’d say about 10 seals to each stick!

@guess26grl: I got everything (save the glue gun) from Nostalgic Impressions, I totally recommend them—I had a great experience!

Wow! My FI is really pushing for us to do this (in gold, even!) but I was a bit wary of how it would look. Can’t wait to see the finished product, but even this is convincing me of the classiness!

Be forewarned: they will likely add additional postage to your invites. We used wax seals, they weren’t nearly as thick as yours (minimal overdrip on the monogram), and we had to pay the .20 non machineable charge because it made the envelopes too thick.

Yours look great, and now I wish we’d gone faux instead of real!

We’re using traditional wax seals for the outter envelope. We’re planning on using gold wax with the fleur de lis stamp. Yours look amazing!!!! Hopefully ours come out as well.

We manufacture wax seals* in a variety of colours and emboss the seal with your logo. The basic is a synthetic wax that we have developed. It looks like traditional wax, but dues not crack and is flexible. Every wax seal is unique, the seals differs from others with its individual imprint.

I copied the Sewings’ genius strategy when making our wax seals too! I’m convinced there’s no better way to do it! Yours turned out perfect and I can’t wait to see the final invitations!

Yay for wax seals! I have to say I’m surprised though… Mr. FC had no intention of reading Mrs. Sewing’s tutorial (though I told him about it!) and he made all 200 of our wax seals on…. wax paper! Maybe they make it differently in Switzerland?? Anyway, still looking forward to seeing the invites lady! :)

We used real wax and they ended up being pretty fast and easy once we got the hang of it. I love wax seals!

Gorgeous! How much weight do they add to your invite suite? I’m feeling another project coming on…thanks for sharing :)

Thanks everyone! I’m really pleased with how they came out—and surprised by how easy they were :D

@latentsmile: I just weighed one of the seals on my kitchen scale and the weight didn’t even register—so, less than a gram. However, as @pink.sequins mentioned—you will possibly be charged a non-machineable charge due to the thickness (we have square invites so I was already going to be charged the fee anyhow). Hope this helps ;)

These turned out so well! I never would have thought about them adding additional postage. Something to keep in mind!
