Rehearsal Dinner Dilemma

July 8th, 2011 @ 11:46 am by Mrs. Cannon

So, the rehearsal dinner was a part of the wedding that I kind of forgot about completely at first. If you go back to my budget post, you’ll see I didn’t budget for it. Oops. Oh, well, I’m not planning anything too fancy so it shouldn’t cost too much, and Mr. Cannon’s parents have graciously offered to cover the cost, so my booty got saved there. Now we’re trying to decide where to hold this special occasion.

Mr. Cannon and I agree that we should have pizza. We were thiiiiis close to going with pizza for the reception because, quite frankly, we really like pizza. So, it was a total no brainer to go for pizza at the rehearsal dinner. Somewhat recently, Toledo was blessed with a branch of a Detroit based deep dish pizza place called Pizzapapalis. It’s downtown near the ball park, and Mr. Cannon and I really like the pizza. They have a banquet space and offer pizza buffets for a reasonable fee. It seemed to be the perfect solution. We were pumped, and I asked Mr. Cannon to call them and get information about renting the space and setting up the dinner.

Here is where things started getting iffy.

Mr. Cannon called and they didn’t give him any information. They told him to print a banquet request from their website and fax it in. It seemed odd to me that they couldn’t just talk to him about it, but whatever. We printed out the request and filled it out and gave it to FMIL Cannon to fax for us. After not hearing about it for a couple of weeks, I bugged Mr. Cannon to make sure his mom had faxed it in for us. She assured us that she had sent it in the very day we gave it to her. So Mr. Cannon called Pizzapapalis to verify they had received the request. The woman he talked to on the phone said it was in their events folder, and they would get everything set up closer to the date of the event. This made me very uncomfortable. I mean, why wouldn’t they have called us to let us know if the date we requested was available? And can’t we get the event written up and a deposit paid so that we can be confident in our event plan? Doesn’t it just seem odd that they wouldn’t even let us know that they received our request? It was all very shady and not the kind of uncertainty I need when I’m already stressed about the wedding. I was very disappointed, and thought we should look elsewhere.

Not long after that we had our engagement pictures taken. After the photo shoot, Mr. Cannon and I went to get dinner, and since we were already downtown, we went to Maumee Bay Brew Pub. We got one of their specialty pizzas and it was really good. We started thinking about doing the rehearsal dinner there. Mr. Cannon emailed a request and they responded promptly, giving him all the details. They explained that we had to come up with a limited menu of their offerings for our guests. Mr. Cannon and I thought that offering a menu featuring a few pizzas and salads would satisfy that requirement and work with our desire for a pizza-centric rehearsal dinner. Plus, given our love of brew pubs, it seemed like a natural fit. (We travel to brew pubs all over and I collect a t-shirt at each brewery we go to. I plan to make a quilt out of the t-shirts when we have 49 of them. We’re currently about halfway there.)

After the non-existent customer service at Pizzapapalis, I’m inclined to go with Maumee Bay. They’re similarly priced, and pretty similarly located. Both can indulge our desire for a pizza dinner. But I think Mr. Cannon really wants to have it at Pizzapapalis, which I was totally in support of until they pretty much blew us off. It’s time to make a choice and I get the feeling Mr. Cannon and I do not agree. I know he will go along with whatever I choose, because he is sweet that way and wants me to be happy, but I feel like I’ve dominated so much of the wedding planning that I kind of want to give him this. But I’m completely freaked out by the way things have been going with Pizzapapalis.

So, I’m asking you, hive, what do you think we should do?

I would be very hesitant to wait until “closer to the date” to get everything finalized. Also the fact that they won’t even tell you if they are available is a red flag- sounds to me like they are waiting to see if they get a bigger party request for the same date so that they can bump you. I’d go with the brew pub.

I say go with the brewery. You do not need the added stress from always wondering if the rehearsal dinner at Pizzapapalis is going to fall through. There is enough stress with weddings as is and I would go with the place that will confirm it. Even if Mr. Cannon likes Pizzapapalis better, it is better to reduce your stress.

Let him know that you want him to be pleased with the location, but that you also need to make sure that you’ll actually get a dinner out of it! Maybe set a timeline, like “if we dont get things ironed out in two weeks, the pub is our back up plan”. Also call the restuarant and tell them that you’re thinking about going with the pub because they’ve been so responsive. If they don’t seem to care, that’s a really bad sign!!

I think you should go with the Maumee place. In my experience booking vendors, I have only booked vendors that responded promptly via email or phone. My fiance put it perfectly….We’re trying to give them money so they should be catering to us!

As a Detroit girl I had the privilege of going to school right down the street from Pizzapapalis in high school luckily I was active in dance because we spent alot of after school hours there… Honestly as good as the pizza is your piece of mind is much greater and if the brewery makes you more comfortable I say take to Mr. Cannon and see if he would mind switching. Plus you get a great t-shirt to remind you of your rehearsal dinner.

I would call the first place and tell them what’s up. Just say you aren’t comfortable waiting until closer to the date and that you want to go over some details and put a deposit down. If they aren’t willing to do what you want then they are doing good business. Like you said, you shouldn’t have to worry over something like the rehearsal dinner when you have a whole wedding to stress over!

Brew pub all the way! Buy Mr. Cannon a Pizzapapalis pizza with a note saying “This is for you since our rehearsal will be at Maumee Bay”. You don’t want to show up to Pizzapapalis with them unprepared and possibly handing your future in-laws a huge bill that was never discussed beforehand. Or worse, getting bumped too close to the date to find an alternative, like @legallyengaged suggested.

The Maumee brew pub being so responsive says they want your business and they want to make you happy.

I’d discuss it more with Mr. Cannon, but the brew pub does seem more excited and willing to work with you. I think Melissa’s way of telling Mr. Cannon about your decision with the pizza is HILARIOUS!

To settle your mind on another matter, I’ve always been told that it is customary for the groom’s parents to pay for the rehearsal dinner– so you shouldn’t feel bad about not including it in your own budget. ;)

Go with your gut! From what you’ve written, it seems like bad form all around at Pizzapapalis. I’d hesitate to entrust them with such an event, too.

brewpub–the other place has already given you a preview of the experience they will offer to your guests, and that is not something you want to thank your wedding party with. plus, BEER. NUF SAID.

Definitely the Brewery! While Pizzapapalis sounds amazing (I want pizza now!), their lack of communication and any sort of contract is a huge red flag to me. Plus, think of the beer :)

Brew Pub. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt but if there’s already a significant lack of interest or attention this early on cut your losses and go with someone that’s giving you the service you expect.

I would probably go with the brewery mainly due to the lack of communication.

Suggest to Mr Cannon that you give Pizzapapalis one more chance. Call them up, speak to the manager, and explain to them that if they can’t book you in now, you’ll make your reservation elsewhere. If necessary, offer to go in and meet them. But agree with the Mr that if they still can’t accommodate you, then go with the Brew Pub. (And giving him a Pizzapapalis pizza as a consolation is a great idea.)

If you have your heart set on Pizzapapalis, go IN PERSON to speak to someone. That way you can be assured you have their full attention. If their customer service is still lacking at that point, go with Option B. It’s not worth your peace of mind!

I am definitely on board with the brewery—I am all about peace of mind and customer service and it appears they have yet to give you either of those things (plus brew pubs hold a special meaning for you as a couple)! Buuuut, as @Pastachica mentioned—it wouldn’t hurt (if Mr. C *really* has his heart set on Pizzapapalis) to go in person, explain the situation and see if they rectify it and put your mind at ease! Good luck, lady!

I’m sorry since I know it sucks to feel like you’re disappointing Mr. C, but Pizzapapalis is clearly showing you now what it will be like to do business with them going forward, and I think you should go with the Brewpub. At least the red flags happened early enough that you can still do something about it and avoid the aggro!

There must be something else about the wedding that Mr. C is excited about and can have his way on, right? And it’s not like you’re being unreasonable with this request, it’s clear you wanted the same thing he did.

The vendor disappointed you both; you didn’t disappoint Mr. C.

I’m sure he has his reasons, but I don’t really know why Mr. C would still want to go with Pizzapapalis given their subpar customer service and that you agreed that the brew pub had good food, too. Maybe follow up one more time, but if they can’t provide you with good service if they know that not giving it to you will lose them your business, I wouldn’t trust them enough to not book the brew pub.

Nail down Pizzapapalis. Call up the manager and tell them you need to set this up and get confirmation ASAP or you will book elsewhere and leave them a bad review due to their lack of communication.

If that still doesn’t fly then go with the brew pub…

I’m also a Toledo bride (well, I was last summer) and we had our rehearsal dinner at Pizza Papalis. Everything worked out fine for us after my MIL called them to set up the menu…but definitely go with your gut on this one, because Maumee Bay is awesome, too. One thing that surprised us about Pizza Papalis: they have banquet space upstairs, but if your party doesn’t fill the room, they will schedule other events for the same time. When we were having our rehearsal dinner, another family was celebrating a birthday. Not too big of a deal, but it was surprising. I guess I just assumed we would have the space to ourselves. The food was great, though!
