It’s a Wrap

July 8th, 2011 @ 2:34 pm by Mrs. Ladyfingers

Our invites are all done and designed, thanks to our good friend Designer Mama—yayyy!—and scheduled to be addressed next month. We’ll be sending out the first wave in late August to out-of-towners since we didn’t do save the dates. It’s a fairly simple suite, with just an invite and an RSVP postcard, since we didn’t want a ton of paper in there. But still, I was a little challenged on how to communicate directions, accommodations, and other information to help our guests navigate our wedding weekend. Since DM was so generous in helping us, I didn’t want to burden her with millions of tasks, so I started thinking of ways I could gather the pieces while including everything the recipients would need.

I decided I would print a simple tag displaying our wedding website and the password and username, indicating that they should go there to find out where to stay, what to do, how to get there, etc. Whether this would be a small label or a card in and of itself was up for debate, but it certainly didn’t need to be designed like the invitation—it should just match closely in font and color, so simple enough.

Some inspiration I gathered from around the ‘net used a variety of methods for corralling all the pieces together:

So here we have four approaches: The cards-n-pockets invitation, the belly band, the twine-wrapped package (a personal favorite), and this EXTREMELY clever custom design with a grommet and a tag and everything.

The pocket invite was out for me right away, just because I didn’t want to have to spend more money than necessary on invites that we had already saved so much on by using a talented friendor. The belly band is a classic, but if I was going to do it I wanted to put our own twist on it. Like I said, the twine-wrapped package with an attached tag was always a prime contender—it was like wrapping everything up in a little package, so adorbs—but I don’t think I could deal with the little pockmark the twine knot would make or the bulkiness. Man, I am so anal. And while the custom approach was divine, I thought maybe it would be taking things a bit too far for my skill set.

So, belly band it was—but I didn’t want a paper one. Initially, I thought lace. But I wanted to do gray lace (you’ll see why later on), and that proved to be super hard to find! I trotted down to our local fabric and craft emporium, and instead found some lovely wide satin pewter ribbon—perfect!

Now, I hate to leave you hanging, but I’m gonna hold out on showing you the finished invitation project until the first batch goes out to our guests. OK…as long as I can, or until the first batch goes out, whichever comes first. But for now, I want to know: How did you organize your invitation suite? Did you have several inserts? How did you put them together? Lemme see them!

Why is grey lace so hard to find? I looked for it too and could never find the bulk amount I needed for cheap, it was such a bummer. The ribbon sounds lovely though, can’t wait to see the invites!

@Mrs. Ostrich: Sorrryyyyyy! Soon enough, though! Mostly just because they’re not 100% done yet :)

@Miss Pony: I know, right? To me it seems like it would be the prettiest kind of lace. Anyway, I can’t wait to show them to you all!

We also had a tough time finding lace suitable for a belly band (why is that?), and ended up using satin ribbon. :) Lovely inspiration photos!

@latentsmile: Thanks for sharing - those look great!

@Mrs. Tartlet: I don’t know! Maybe it’s because so much of it is more like trim or hem lace, so it ends up being flat on one side… I’m also just very picky so the right color was hard to find. Once I found it in ribbon, the idea morphed!

I haven’t even begun to think about our invitations. With the self-induced issues designing our STDs and engagement party invites, I want nothing to do with this step of the invitation process. I have a friend of a friend who’s a graphic designer and I can only hope that she’ll agree to design something unique for our invites that actually matches what I painstakingly slaved over for our first invites.
