Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich's Picture
Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich, Washington, DC/Cape May, NJ Age and Occupation: 28, School Counselor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 40, Collegiate Athletics Engagement Date: March 27, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Congress Hall Hotel About Me: I am a school counselor who spends my day wrangling children and my nights attempting to be creative with wedding projects. My enthusiasm for each of these activities far surpasses my skill. Thank goodness Mr. Cucumber Sandwich is there to pick up the pieces and be the voice of reason about my DIY tries. I have an obsession with terrible romantic comedies (‘From Justin to Kelly’ anyone?, anyone?!?), competitive Scrabble play, and hot dogs. I could eat astronaut ice cream for every meal and can’t seem to resist buying more shoes. Our wedding is going to be a true hodge podge of semi-destination, tradition, Yuengling, New England charm, with just a dash of ‘Jersey Shore’ thrown in. It has been six years in the making and I can’t wait to marry my best friend.
About Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich

The “cookie letters” are in the mail! What are the “cookie letters,” you might ask? Excellent question. Like many brides before me, I am planning on having a cookie bar. In Pittsburgh (and the surrounding area) it is a wedding tradition for important women in the life of the bride and groom to bake homemade cookies to be served to the guests as favors.

It took me all weekend, but I finally wrote the letters to the Sammie aunts and friends asking them if they would be willing to help me with this tradition. Hopefully they will say yes! I read somewhere that on average we need four to six cookies per person. That is a whopping 625 cookies! Ahhh so many. I have a feeling I might be doing some baking as well.

I am so excited to have a cookie table, but I am at a complete loss about how to set it up. The perfectionist in me is not wild about the platters and platters of cookies. Something about a sea of cookies rubs me the wrong way. (Though I am sure there are ways to make it gorgeous.)

And then Martha came along and rocked my world. Oh, Martha.

Now I know why people bow down and worship you. So classy and elegant. You make mounds of cookies dainty and aesthetically pleasing. Only Martha. I was sold. Cookies in jars it is!

My research on those jars has been amateur hour, and I can only find them at Crate and Barrel for $12 each. When I think about the amount of jars I will probably need, $12 is too much. I can probably purchase the jars with the intent of reselling them and make a small portion of the money back, but that does not seem appealing.

Anyone know where to find jars big enough for cookies? Any tips on carting cookies to Cape May?

Places like TJ Maxx and Marshall’s often have these, as well as Michael’s (make sure you have a coupon!!) and Hobby Lobby (if you have one nearby). Michael’s & Hobby Lobby always have coupons and regularly do 40% of 50% off all glassware, vases, jars, etc.

I think Hobby Lobby is having a 50% of glassware sale right now actually.

Just bought some 1 and 2 gallon SizEd apothecary jars at walmart for $5.97 and $8.97. In the kitchen section, mine had them on bottom shelf by the baking canisters

Look at Home Goods! We bought the jars for our smores bar at Home Goods :)

And as a girl from Pittsburgh living near DC, it saddens me when I attend a wedding and there are no cookies - so yay for the cookies table!

Jars are great for cookie bars/tables. The one thing you have to worry about with jars vs plates/platters is the size of the cookies. If the cookies are too large they might look odd. Smaller cookies are better in the jars because they take up more space. To get cookies like chocolate chip/oatmeal raisin, etc use a scooper to get them consistent sizes.

One major suggestion that will help you a lot- you say you need like 600+ cookies, yes?

Were you planning to have them all on the table at the same time?

If the answer to that question is yes, then you are going to end up buying WAY too many jars.

Plan on one jar per type of cookie only, then assign a person (or people) to replenish the jars as the cookies start to dwindle.

This will keep your table looking dainty, and you won’t need tons of jars.

(Oh, and for jars, I second T.J.Maxx. That’s where I got most of my jars for my candy buffet)

You should purchase a jar for each of the ladies baking cookies…they can fill them at home and bring them, then keep them as a thank-you for baking. Just a thought!

I’ve definitely seen these at Marshalls, and more recently at Target (though I can’t recall the price). My wedding brain hasn’t quite turned off, yet, and I feel an overwhelming pull towards cute containers like these. ;)

Search for Old Time Pottery in your area. If you have one nearby (or within reasonable driving distance) they have a massive selection of decorating pieces, including various sizes and shapes of jars and vases. That’s where I got all of my apothecary jars for my candy bar at really good prices.

I love the jar look! I’ve seen lots at Hobby Lobby for good prices, but I’m a garage sale lover myself :)

I got mine at TJMaxx for $5 a piece! All different shapes and sizes too - which is nice! I think the prices ranged from $4 to $7!
