Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!

A Cry for Musical Help

July 11th, 2011 @ 3:12 pm by Mrs. Snow Cone

I feel like I have most parts of this wedding under control, with one glaring exception—the music. We booked our DJ eons ago and then I promptly put “deal with wedding music” in the furthest recesses of my brain. Now that I can count the number of weeks until the big day on one hand, I figure I should probably resurrect my focus on the wedding music.

Don’t get me wrong—I am a relatively big music fan, and I really enjoy a well-constructed playlist. However, my music fandom is pretty passive. If whatever’s playing on the radio is decent, I’ll keep it on. If it’s stinky, I’ll change stations. Rarely am I so impressed by an artist, album, or song to go out of my way to make an iTunes purchase. My personal music library is mostly comprised of musical and movie soundtracks and Top 40, so I don’t necessarily think that’s the ideal soundtrack to a wedding reception. As a result, my library of “songs to be played at the wedding” is pretty tiny, mostly because I’ve never taken the time to compile a list of any form. Unfortunately, my inactivity over the past months has segued into sheer anxiety; I feel like a reception’s music can make or break the evening, and I definitely feel like the pressure’s on to pick some sweet booty-shaking tunes. I want the dance floor to be active, but I don’t feel like I’m necessarily up to the task to get people out there in the first place.

So, to sum up, this is what I don’t want:

And this is what I do want:

A Cry for Musical Help : wedding music pittsburgh Fun Wed fun-wed

I figured that I would confront my own musical shortcomings by turning this task over to the online community, which leads me to my most pressing of questions: What song would get you on the dance floor at a wedding reception? Fast or slow, new or old… I just want to hear any and all suggestions you’ve got up your sleeves!

“I Gotta Feeling” - Black Eyed Peas!!! Fun, a lot of people like it, probably over played, but I still love it! I’m a music freak, I already have my “must play” list done, and I’m not even engaged. Bahaha! :)

Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson (and the Jackson 5), Sly and the Family Stone. These guys make up 75% of the playlists I’ve made for band breaks.

Anything by Black Eyed Peas!

And really, if you want a song to motivate people, you can never go wrong with songs like the Cha Cha Slide, Cupid Shuffle, Shout and Hand Jive.

Most of our crowd got on the dance floor to Michael Jackson, the Cupid Shuffle, Shout and more of the 70s/80s music. Good luck with the list!

I’m glad to know I’m not the only one! My wedding is five weeks away, and I just got a letter from the DJ about how I need to figure all the music out in the next two weeks. Yikes!

The twist, MJ, some bee gees, and pretty much all of the group dances (electric slide, cupid shuffle, cha cha slide etc) They might be cheesy, but they are super popular for a reason.

The advice our DJ had was that regardless of what music was playing, if the bride and groom were dancing and having a good time-most of the crowd would follow. So break out your dancing shoes! :)

Livin’ On a Prayer and Don’t Stop Believin’ are totally 2 80s classics that MUST make an appearance for us, but we’re also 30 and old :) I have to believe Journey has made enough of a resurgence that it should get people out there! Rockin’ singalongs are also awesome, like Bohemian Rhapsody. Shout, definitely. YMCA even!

Honestly, I would dance to Katy Perry (esp. “Firework”) or Pink (”Raise a Glass”) or Rihanna (”Pon de Replay”? Is that the title?).

I am queer and a huge feminist, I kind of want to strangle Katy Perry for “Ur So Gay,” but… I would still totally dance to her. Also Lady Gaga.

Journey! And I think Thriller is a multi-generational pleaser.

I think to start the wedding off, you need to go with classic party anthems that will make EVERYONE get on the floor, not just those who love top 40. Once you get people out there, I think it’s easier to get them to stay whether they like Ke$ha or not…
My suggestions:
Don’t stop believing, Shout, Dancin’ in the streets, Sweet Caroline, Brown Eyed Girl, Like a Prayer, The Way You Make Me Feel… now I really want to go dancing

Lady Gaga & Michael Jackson are always the top two for me…I’m also a lover of (usually banned) typical group dances like Cupid Shuffle :) Good luck!

The advice I give every ND bride: just use your Backer playlist! (you know you have one on your ipod, and if you don’t, one of my BMs must!). Our original plan was actually to hire DJ Drew, but it didn’t work out :( But our Backer playlist was a huge hit! My mom actually made a comment–”Did you just pick all of these 80s songs to make the old people happy?”–and I had to explain to her that they were songs that all of the young people liked too :)

Usher - Yeah and DJ’s Got Us Falling In Love Tonight

I’m also old and totally agree with Bon Jovi and Journey. MJ, Stevie Wonder, and some other classics like Some Kind of Wonderful, Respect, Celebrate, September.

I can’t wait to see what everyone else posts too as I meet with my DJ in a week!

Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO is pretty popular right now and definitely has a good dance beat. Taio Cruz and Usher have a lot of popularity with younger folks. Don’t forget to throw in some classic mid-90’s stuff too like “This Is How We Do It”.

Michael Jackson, Madonna and Journey are always crowd pleasers, and Beyonce’s Single Ladies was easily the favorite at my cousin’s wedding
