Honeymoon: Great Expectations

July 11th, 2011 @ 5:54 pm by Mrs. Pony

I had exactly two requirements for our honeymoon:

  1. It had to be somewhere that I could get a stamp on my passport (do they still stamp it anymore? Mr. P said they don’t and that made me sad).
  2. It had to be somewhere that neither of us had been before. I don’t want any “Oh, remember when we did this last time we were here?” followed by a “That wasn’t me, dear.” Avoiding awkwardness is high on my list of honeymoon priorities.

With this criteria, we had a whole slew of options available to us. So, I started dreaming about all the wonderful places we could relax and relish in our newly married status, including:

As you can see, I like to dream big. But, after a little discussion, we tentatively set our sights on Greece:

I want to go to there. Right now (barring any political uprising, of course).

Greece fit my criteria perfectly; it requires passport stamping and neither Mr. Pony or I have been there before. Plus, it’s absolutely gorgeous, and has a great mix of beach, history, and adventure to please any and all of our desires.

We knew it would be expensive, but we really wanted to go all out for and just enjoy our honeymoon since it’s an excuse that can seldom be used more than once (or twice. or three times.) in a lifetime. But, if you can’t tell, our Grecian honeymoon was not meant to be.

To be continued…

What is your dream honeymoon location? Were you lucky enough to go there?

They do stamp passports! We had ours stamped in italy, croatia, england, france, and the dominican republic (and when we came back to the u.s., there was an entry stamp)

My brother was in Greece in the height of the political unrest, and he said just avoid the protests and you’re good. The biggest problem is that the transportation would go on strike occasionally, but you can usually plan around that. :)

We got our stamp in London but not in Paris… the one place I WANTED a stamp from the most! It was our dream honeymoon but we did it for our 1 year.

You know, the train from Germany to Paris is pretty cheap and quick… just something to think about :)

We have just booked our tickets to my (oops, our!) dream honeymoon in Bali.

I’ve heard mixed reviews on Greece as a honeymoon spot if that makes you feel better. One loved it and the other couple felt they were unwelcome by the locals the entire time. Snide comments, etc. This put a big damper on their otherwise beautiful trip.

Greece is still there for an anniversary for you:)

Every place I go to I ask them to stamp my passports, just in case they weren’t going to!

:( Greece looks awesome and I’ve always wanted to go there. I’m sure you’ll find an awesome place to go!

Sorry Greece didn’t work out :(. We got stamps in our passports for Mexico for our honeymoon a couple months back, so I’m sure they (or at least some countries) still stamp.

Most places do stamp passports… but you do have to request them in some spots. I can’t wait to see where you ended up deciding!

@MissSealsMOH: Yes, typically you can ask for a stamp and they’ll give you one. I even get stamps when I go to Canada.

I’m sorry that Greece didn’t work out. :( That’s a place on our “must visit” list as well. Looking forward to seeing what location you did choose!

Bummer about Greece…can’t wait to see where you’ve decided to honeymoon. Our dream vacation is Maldives and we plan to go for a future anniversary. Instead, we’ll go somewhere familiar and comfortable for us - Cabo :) We’ve been there before so we won’t feel obligated to take in all the sights!

Aw, Greece would have been fun!!!! I’ve spent a decent amount of time in Europe, and when you first land from the US they’ve always stamped my passport, but then if you travel around once you’re already there, you don’t get any more stamps :( It saddens me, because now you look at my passport and it looks like I’ve hardly traveled anywhere!!!

I get sad about passport stamps because they don’t do it in the EU anymore and that’s where I mostly travel :(

Still, I have some cool ones from Morocco and Egypt. I was really sad when I had to renew my passport and stop using the one with the ubercool Russian visa.

We started off in Ireland and that was the only country that stamped us. It seemed going between EU nobody stamped. And we went to 6 countries!
I can’t speak for the atypical honeymoon spots such as Mykonos, Santorini, etc but Athens and neighboring small island leave little to be desired minus the Greek monuments.

i’ve had to get extra pages in my passport TWICE because i’ve run out of room. yes, they absolutely stamp passports.

the places they might not are generally within the EU. you’ll get stamped upon entering and exiting the EU, but not necessarily in any countries you travel to within it.
