I thought flower girls’ dresses were going to be much, much easier than bridesmaids’ dresses. After all, it’s just two little girls, right? Wrong.
The first little girl is my stepsister J. I was 21 and J was four when my parents got married. My stepdad and his first wife got divorced when J was one, so her first memories are really of my mom and her dad together and of us being her older siblings. She told me the first time Mr. D and I got engaged that she was going to be a flower girl and that she wanted a poufy dress and a tiara. And if I didn’t provide these things, she wasn’t going to do it. She is very, very precocious. Now that she is almost nine, she said she will still be a flower girl, even if she doesn’t get all of the other stuff.

My other flower girl is BM C’s daughter, Little A. She is currently three and is also quite a handful. It’s hard to say no to her sparkly eyes and little curls.
Isn’t she precious? (Personal photo)
It’s quite an age difference between the girls, which also means quite a size difference. Especially when you take into consideration that J is very tall for her age. She is taller than her 10-year-old brother, no joke. I thought it would be easy to just plunk them both into a cute blue dress, but sizing is becoming a slight problem. I chose blue because a) A is very little and therefore still messy, and I know it would be easy to get it dirty before the ceremony started, and b) J is also very messy and I know her reputation with white clothing. Not to mention chartreuse is just way too bright a color to put both girls in. The problem with a lot of flower girls’ dresses is that many of them only go up to a size 14. If J goes through another growth spurt before the wedding, there is a chance she will be too big for a 14. That would mean that we would have to put her in a junior bridesmaids’ dress, which would then double the price.
It would also mean that the girls would be in different dresses, since junior bridesmaids’ dresses do not go down to a 4T size. I’m hoping that no drastic growth spurts occur so I can have one of these two dresses:
I think it’s cute and young! A little more formal, but still so cute! (Image via Amazon)
A little more formal with an adorable bubble skirt and more sequins! (Image via Girls Dress Line)
If it does happen, then we will have to search for a new dress and try to find a similar style in a flower girl size and a junior bridesmaid size. I told little J that we will cross that bridge when we come to it. She told me as long as she can twirl in it, we’re cool.
Did any of you have any problems fitting your flower girls?
