The DIY Marathon Continues

July 11th, 2011 @ 9:15 am by Mrs. Balloons

I’ve always loved the look of birch candle holders. As usual, after browsing numerous sites I decided that I wasn’t willing to pay that much for something that I could attempt to do myself. I knew that the exact look of the wood wouldn’t be the same since we have no actual birch trees nearby, but I was OK with that. It was just the overall woodsy, rustic look that I wanted.

Save On Crafts

If you remember, we had several trees that had to be cut down during the process of clearing area for our reception building. I had Mr. B cut various sizes of stumps from those trees. Then he took his biggest drill bit size that he had in his tool set to drill into the center of each of them.

Then just throw a candle in…pretty simple really!

Most of them I’ll put candles into, but I’m going to have Mr. B cut some larger holes into some of them and I’ll put flowers in those.

I’d also like to use some stumps just to set around and have pillar candles sitting on top.

I’m jealous! I want this look too- but we don’t have any trees over here in the sand dunes! Can’t wait to see it all come together!

This looks great! We are thinking about using wood grain paper for our invites. Love the look of it but we’ll see! Can’t wait to see the finished product.

We had wood stumps all over our wedding. We used one as our card box.

Love it! My BIL (sister’s husband) made a ton of birch bark candleholders/vases for their wedding last year and it looked fabulous! Just don’t get too attached - apparently the guests agreed, so much so that a number of them decided the candleholders were favors and took them home!! :) Also - with the really wide cuts (like 8″ and above) that were too wide for tapers or pillar candles, he cut three votive-sized holes and plopped those metal-sided votives in - in case you have some wide logs!

These look fabulous B! What a great way to reuse the wood you had to cut down!

great solution to the lack of birch trees! I love being able to use the tea lights rather than larger candles.

That last photo–gorgeous! High five for giving new life to the trees you had to cut down. :)

I am incorporating one small birch stump also, in the middle of the tables (I have 23 tables) and then surround them with more candles in glass. I am also incorporating branches etc …. I have let go of one of my “major projects” - tho. My plan was to have 50 glittered & “snowy” trees lining my aisle (after ceremony to be used around the reception hall) I have no where to store all of these once they are in their pots, cemented =( so I gave up that quest. I am only have 4- 7 foot trees, cemented into decorated pots at the front of the aisle and then these will be placed in the corner of the dance floor….I still think it will be great but I am a wee bit disappointed that that task was not achievable. Your day will be gorgeous - looking forward to pictures later on =)

Those look great! I’m so jealous of people who live around birch trees! We’ve just got pine trees, and good luck getting one of these puppies that’s less than a couple of feet around… wouldn’t make the best candleholder. (Cake plate base, maybe, but I have my eye on that dresser-pull Martha Stewart project for that.)

Oooo, love it, Balloons! I love the stump vase, very pretty! :)

We are using wood slices under our centerpieces, with flowers and candles. Also a wood slab for our cake. We are getting married under a tree (fingers crossed :) and have a lovely tree on our paper goods. I loved the birch candles as well but also not willing to pay the $$ for em. Yay trees!
