Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich's Picture
Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich, Washington, DC/Cape May, NJ Age and Occupation: 28, School Counselor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 40, Collegiate Athletics Engagement Date: March 27, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Congress Hall Hotel About Me: I am a school counselor who spends my day wrangling children and my nights attempting to be creative with wedding projects. My enthusiasm for each of these activities far surpasses my skill. Thank goodness Mr. Cucumber Sandwich is there to pick up the pieces and be the voice of reason about my DIY tries. I have an obsession with terrible romantic comedies (‘From Justin to Kelly’ anyone?, anyone?!?), competitive Scrabble play, and hot dogs. I could eat astronaut ice cream for every meal and can’t seem to resist buying more shoes. Our wedding is going to be a true hodge podge of semi-destination, tradition, Yuengling, New England charm, with just a dash of ‘Jersey Shore’ thrown in. It has been six years in the making and I can’t wait to marry my best friend.
About Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich

Mr. Cucumber Sammie and I stopped at registration station!  We have two bridal registries and are debating adding a third. Our first registry was at Crate&Barrel.

We attended one of those “invitation only” registry events. We were newly engaged and attending a registry event made us feel shiny and special. It was still almost a year before the wedding, so the helpful saleslady told us we basically couldn’t register for anything because by the time our wedding rolled around it might be discontinued. Still beaming with excitement, we decided we didn’t care. I gave Mr. Cucumber Sammie the scanner and off we went. Here are just a couple of my favorite things.

We waited until a weekend just a couple months from our wedding to create our second registry. We didn’t want to run the risk of having a whole list of “no longer in stock” items. So on Sunday, bright and early, we found ourselves headed to Bed Bath & Beyond. We went right when the store opened so it would be the least crowded. It was a good thing we had the place to ourselves because we might have registered for the whole store. The guy at the store told us it was just easier to register for everything we “think” we could want because taking off was simpler than adding on. Boy, did we ever abide by the “just put it on there” rule. We had to do a lot of editing when we got home. Sadly, Redskins throw blankets did not make the cut.

Clearly having fun

Mr. Cucumber Sammie and I have lived together for a little while, so there aren’t a lot of things we need.  Our strategy for the registry was to upgrade! Better pots, knives, and sheets were high on the list. We recently moved into our first house, which has two bedrooms, so we could use extra sets of sheets and comforters. We also tried to register for things we would never buy for ourselves. Bathroom floor mats…I can buy those myself. Nice sheets…I probably would go for the cheapest, so on the registry they went. We attempted not to register for things we would only use once or twice. I have been brainwashed to believe I need the KitchenAid stand mixer, but I am not a baker so I don’t know when I would honestly use it. Here are some of my favorites from our Bed Bath & Beyond registry.

After tons of editing, I think we have too few items. Mr. Cucumber Sammie thinks it is just right, so I may have to add some things while he is not looking.  Any suggestions?

Did you regret not registering for something?

Cast iron skillets are seriously the best. That is all.

notabene

I would actually marry my cast iron skillet. Best. Thing. Ever.

Also recommended: Cast iron dutch oven. Le sigh. Magical in the wintertime for stews, roasts, etc.

Also: keep a close eye on the recommended cleaning & care instructions, but…even if it gets super beat up, there’s almost nothing that a lot of drying out and rubbing with oil won’t fix. My parents are actually still using my great aunt’s, which has made it through something like 12 aspiring cooks abuses by now.

Haha! I went to one of those invite only things at Crate and Barrel and it was late 2009, so they didn’t even have 2011 dates in their store system. We had to update the date at home. Love the wine fridge! We added one and were so surprised when we got it. Can’t wait to fill it up!

Joining the club of excited people to have a cast iron skillet. ;) Best thing. ever. And, I’m lusting after those melon and teal accent towels! What a perfect color combo!

I registered for the same duvet cover, but in the white/sea green! I doubt that it will hide puppy prints as well as the blue one!

It never hurts to have more items than you need. But yeah! We went to Bed, Bath, & Beyond, and after just registering in the kitchen section, I was ready to go! There were SO. MANY. THINGS.

I worry about things being discontinued so we are 5.5 months out and haven’t registered yet. Our first shower is still 3 months away so we have a little time but probably wouldn’t hurt to push this to the top of the list! BB&B is definitely one place we’ll be hitting up - along w/ that cast iron skillet!

If nobody ends up getting you the wine fridge, check Craigslist. My fiance found a 24-bottle wine fridge for $50, and we love it.

I just logged into my BBB registry and added the cast iron skillet. I was torn before reading this. I took my sister (he just doesn’t understand the need to match the shower curtain to the bathroom rugs so it was better to do this one without him) and she was scanning things when I wasn’t looking. I got home to edit and realized I had registered for a porcelain cow, I feel like she is going to be purchasing it for me after the phone call we had.

Registering for gifts has been on our to do list since we got engaged. We’re down to the wire since my FMIL wants us registered by our engagement party, in less than 3 weeks. Yikes! But I hope our experience (when we find time) will be as fun as yours seemed.

@Miss Hearty: Registering was very fun! And being able to add things from the comfort of my couch is even more fun!
