Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich's Picture
Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich, Washington, DC/Cape May, NJ Age and Occupation: 28, School Counselor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 40, Collegiate Athletics Engagement Date: March 27, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Congress Hall Hotel About Me: I am a school counselor who spends my day wrangling children and my nights attempting to be creative with wedding projects. My enthusiasm for each of these activities far surpasses my skill. Thank goodness Mr. Cucumber Sandwich is there to pick up the pieces and be the voice of reason about my DIY tries. I have an obsession with terrible romantic comedies (‘From Justin to Kelly’ anyone?, anyone?!?), competitive Scrabble play, and hot dogs. I could eat astronaut ice cream for every meal and can’t seem to resist buying more shoes. Our wedding is going to be a true hodge podge of semi-destination, tradition, Yuengling, New England charm, with just a dash of ‘Jersey Shore’ thrown in. It has been six years in the making and I can’t wait to marry my best friend.
About Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich

I accidentally left my USB with all my pictures at work today, so you are going to have to suffer through a pictureless post. I guess this is a perfect time to talk about something that doesn’t really need pictures…taking on my new last name.

I have never been keen on changing my name. I have a beautiful and ethnic last name, if I do say so myself. I have met very few people (besides my family members, of course) who share my last name. Sadly, I have all sisters, and there is only one cousin who will carry on the name. For a while I convinced myself that I could get Mr. Cucumber Sammie to change to my last name. Not going to happen.

Mr. Cucumber Sammie has the last-name equivalent of Jones or Smith. I want us to be a family and share a last name, but going from Beautiful Betty to Plain Jane in the name department is not appealing. A compromise must be reached!

So changing to my last name is out, as is keeping separate last names. After months of hemming and hawing over what to do, I came up with a brilliant idea. Mr. Cucumber Sammie’s last name is his father’s name, who was never really in the picture. His family’s last name (his mom’s maiden name) is a name that I wouldn’t necessarily be as heartbroken to take on as my last name. So it was settled (according to me)! When the time comes, Mr. Cucumber Sammie and I will both change our last name to his mom’s maiden name.

Hopefully nobody decides to buy us monogrammed towels with his current last name for the wedding! And because I couldn’t resist one picture…

My last name is going from unique to common as well. I’m an only child and only grandchild, so my last name is officially going “poof” in a few months when I get married. It really bothered me at first, but once I found other people (thanks Facebook) with the same last name as my current one, I knew the name would live on.

I am also going from a slightly more uncommon name to a pretty common one, but Mr. D is the only male in his family, so there was negotiation on his part. I haven’t 100% decided what I am going to do yet!. My cousin and her husband did the same thing as you and Mr. CS. They took his mother’s maiden name (which was Love, how perfect is that!?) I’m glad you guys found something you could both live with :)

Haha, I’d love to be taking on a simple name like Smith or Jones. I’m going from a complicated sounding Russian name that everyone spells incorrectly with an i instead of a y, to a complicated Italian name. I would have loved to be able to stop having to spell my name for everyone.

I completely understand how you feel. I’m going from the Norwegian equivalent of Smith (but rather rare in the US) to a close American equivalent of Smith (might be more common even). There has been no one at my school district growing up (except for my brother, and my mom who taught there) or at all in my university. In just this year there will be 5 emails for girls with the same combination of my first and FH’s last name. In my small field there are several of the same combination.
Solution? Professionally go by My Maiden and Married names.

I like your compromise though!

I love that Mr. CS is willing to change names too, what a great compromise for both of you!

I don’t want to lose my last name either. Whilst, it is not as common as Jones or Smith; it is a normal name.

So, the conclusion I came to was that I am going to move it over as my middle name.

Your pictureless posts are always the best because they involve your dog. And your dog is just about the cutest thing ever.

I don’t want to change my last name either, and the BF is content with his name. And since we don’t want kiddos, we are planning on keeping separate names.

But if we get things that say THE HISLASTNAMES, I’ll jump around giddily (because I like presents).

DH didn’t have a relationship with his dad (his dad also had a first wife and family that was left in another country before his parents came to the US and had DH, the left DH’s mother, blah blah), he never felt connected to the last name he had and wanted to change it to his mother’s maiden name. Which also happens to be the same as my last name - crazy coincidence.. it was meant to be!. :)

I feel the same way…. I really love my last name! BUT, I have an excellent solution, which is obvious to me since my parents sortof started it when I was born. Instead of having some random middle name, I was given my mothers maiden name, that way I had both of my parents names as a part of mine. I hated it as a child (my moms MN is not exactly pretty, or easy to spell!), but as an adult I cherish it. SO, when it comes time to change my name I will simply switch my current last name to my middle name, and take his somewhat ordinary last name… therefor I am still me + him. :)

My last name went away when I changed mine as well. No boys in the family to carry it on! But… I love how my new last name flows with my first name. And… how cool is it that you both are changing names?!

I face a similar dilemma that we have yet to solve. My name isn’t so much unique…as it’s culturally perfect (first middle and last). His is quite plain and would make me feel sort of blah about my name if i took it.

I’ve tried convincing him to just add the Mc from my name onto his, but so far, he’s not going for it!

I am going from a unique italian last name with lots of vowels to a common name - Gerber… the worst part is, everyone ALWAYS says “like the baby food?” It drives me crazy and it’s not even my name yet!

I think it’s neat that you guys are both changing your names. I love seeing couples talk through and come up with a mutually satisfying resolution to the name change issue, whatever that solution ends up being.

I’m going from a pretty standard, easy to spell last name to a somewhat complicated Italian one that always has to be spelled out and is always mis-pronounced.

However, I’ve always had to spell my first name because no one ever gets it right…. so now I’m going to have to spell out first AND last. /sigh

The only plus is I’ll be moving up in the alphabet from an S to a B (so at least our kids won’t have to wait in line forever like I did! lol).
