Honeymoon: Sense and Sensibility

July 13th, 2011 @ 1:14 pm by Mrs. Pony

When I left off, we were seriously considering Greece for our honeymoon (Ponymoon? Too much?).  We bought a book, researched prices, and I started dreaming about all the online shipping I was going to do for new outfits (OK, I still do that).

And then Mr. Pony got offered a job. And Greece had to be put on hold while we worked through what Mr. Pony’s new job would mean for our wedding and honeymoon plans.

One night before Mr. Pony moved we started discussing our honeymoon options. Although he hadn’t talked to his employer yet about the situation, we were pretty certain he wouldn’t get more than a week of vacation considering he will only be working for this company for three months at the time of our wedding. We knew Greece couldn’t be done in a week (or four days once you factor in flights and travel time). Even if Mr. Pony was allowed more time off, we were both resistant to him taking two+ weeks off after only working for a few months so that we could gallivant around Greece.

I admit, this was not an easy or fun realization for me to come to.

There were tears (a lot of them) on my end (although much of them came from the stress and frustration of the many life changes happening to us in a very short amount of time, but they were still real).

After mourning the loss of our dream honeymoon, we had to start thinking about places that were a little more practical given our time restrictions. We were set on leaving right after the wedding (to cut down on travel and time off), but a dear friend is getting married six days after us, and I’m determined to go to their wedding. This left us with at most six days to say farewell to our wedding guests, travel, honeymoon, and get ourselves back to Chicago for our friends’ wedding. Realistically, our first and last days will be consumed by travel and/or exhaustion, so we’ll have four full days in which to ’moon.

In order to maximize our honeymoon time, we decided the sensible thing to do was go somewhere stateside (sensibility is not my strong suit, so this was a tough pill for me to swallow).

I’d like to say that we had a rational discussion about our options and picked a place that we both loved, but that would be a lie. Still in hysterics from realizing Greece (and any foreign country) was no longer an option, I declared (between sobs) that the only place in the continental US I would even consider going for our honeymoon is Walt Disney World. And only if we also went to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. And only if Mr. Pony promised to take me to Greece within a year. Yes, I was acting like a petulant child. It was not my proudest moment.

And, because he is amazing, Mr. Pony agreed. To Disney, to Harry Potter, and to Greece within a year (I’m holding him to it too!).

This past week, Mr. P spent a long time finalizing our plans; finding accommodations, making dinner reservations, mapping out a tentative schedule, and researching some non-kiddie activities to partake in. So, in a handful of weeks we will be down in sunny Florida taking a spin on a ride or two:

It’s a far cry from our dream honeymoon, but at least I can get my (Epcot) passport stamped:

…and spend time with my favorite person on Earth in the happiest place on Earth (I think I’m getting infinitely sappier as we get closer to the wedding, sorry).

Anyone else going/went to Disney for your honeymoon? Did you take in all the attractions or take it easy?

Given the current situation in Greece, I think you are better off not traveling there at the moment. Hopefully things will improve before your next trip though!

Harry Potter land is amaaazing (we went two days before our wedding)! It may not be Greece but you are going to love it! Plus, you get to wear the “Just Married” pin around Disney.

Oddly, we’re planning to go to Greece for our Honeymoon, but I’m a little jealous of your plans to go to Disney! FI and I went to DW for our first vacation and it was Ah.Maz.Ing. I still reminisce about it! We thought about going back for our honeymoon cause you get all kinds of perks (free stuff!), but our first trip was only 3 years ago so it seems a little soon to go back. But I made him promise we’ll go for our 1 year anniversary so we can go to Harry Potter world (so excited!!).

OMG, the fiance and I went to HP World a year ago this week, and it is SO FLIPPING AMAZING!!! We can’t wait to go back and also go to Disney together. I’m sorry your trip to Greece didn’t work out at this time, but you’ll have a lifetime to travel with him! :-)
(We’re also kind of in the same boat with the out of country honeymoon. We’ll be waiting about six months after the wedding to go on ours!)

Me and the fh were just talking about a WDW honeymoon. We have a cruise booked but due to recent events involving a broken foot, we aren’t sure if he will be able to enjoy it. So, we are looking into Disney in case his foot isn’t completely healed. Not only is it one of my absolute favorite places to vacation, but it is also wheelchair accessible so he can have fun without having to walk! Oh, and there is the added bonus of Minnie bride ears…Needless to say, I’ll be happy with either outcome!

oh - would LOVE to see HP world! we had a similar situation (only it’s me with the new job and limited time off) so we decided to mini-moon right after the wedding and do our 2+ week “big honeymoon” to Italy next year. you reached a good compromise, I think!

Wow, this is so similar to our situation and we’ll be hitting up Disney/Wizarding World too! I was dreaming of the Greek Isles, but we weren’t sure we’d be able to afford/schedule a honeymoon right away. Luckily a family friend generously offered to let us use his time share in the Animal Kingdom. I think we’re going to try to squeeze some beach time (Clearwater, perhaps?) and some baseball spring training in as well. I will be anxiously awaiting your recaps as it appears we’re honeymoon twins!

My FI proposed in Feb at Wishes at WDW. Needless to say, we loved it there! I am sure you will have a fantastic time. Harry Potter land is cool. I liked the butterbeer drinks. Tasted like butterscotch cream soda.

So funny because when we first started talking honeymoons, we too wanted to go to Greece. We changed too because we couldn’t get more than a week off from our jobs and are now doing a cruise. However, actually are also set to go to Disney within 1 year of us getting married for a long weekend and are super excited about it! Small world!

just a tip from someone who lives about 10 minutes from Disney in Orlando. Bring about 5 changes of clothes per day because it is beyond hot in central florida this time of year.

Miss Pony, I absolutely demand that you refer to it as the “Ponymoon” from here on out! :) You’ll have a ball…

Oh me me me! We’re staying at the Grand Floridian for 5 days and then going on the Disney Dream for a cruise. We got engaged on the cruise and everyone just made SUCH a big deal about us (photos with the ship’s captain, champagne delivered to our room, “just engaged” buttons which made every single cast member congratulate us, free desserts, etc) on the rest of the trip. I figure I love Disney, and where else am I going to be made such a big deal of for being a newlywed hehe :)
