About Mrs. Funnel Cake

My Deep Dark Hair Secret

July 13th, 2011 @ 9:18 am by Mrs. Funnel Cake

I am not one of those women who is great at doing their own hair. You know Joan Holloway on Mad Men who always arrives with perfect locks? I’m constantly questioning the show’s plausibility for a working woman in the 1960s being able to do her own hair in this quality every day. It’s just too good.

While I don’t have a team of stylists putting together my hair for every scene like Joan/Christina Hendricks does, I’m still hoping I can scrounge up some nice tresses for the big day. I would really like if someone else could just make my hair look amaaazing. (By snapping their fingers or something convenient like that.)

But as I’m in Switzerland at the moment, it makes it a bit difficult to search for local hair dressers in Columbus, Ohio.

I mean, I’m certainly not flying in a stylist from Zürich. To be honest, I’ve actually never been to a hair dresser in Switzerland… ever. To be even more honest, I haven’t been to a hair dresser in over 10 years, so it’s not like I have a beloved gal back in Ohio who’s pining away to trim my locks.

Why have I been avoiding hair salons for a decade? Well… when I was 13 or so, I dyed my hair pink. And it didn’t turn out so well…

The stylist scolded me as she dyed my hair brown again and told me never to do this to my hair again. (I didn’t listen.)

Yep, that’s as big as that image is getting for ya.

Instead, I dyed my hair every colour under the sun, except green, and when my tresses were fried I covered the whole mess up with black and grew my hair out slow and painfully.

Commence hat-wearing for one year! (Even in summer!)

That is actually the reason why I have long hair right now… not because I’m planning a wedding. I just wanted to see how long I could grow it out after I destroyed my hair with bleach and dye and Mr. Funnel Cake happened to propose before I chopped it off.

As a result of my hair escapades, I have been cutting and dying my own hair and I haven’t looked back because the price is FREE. I have a bit of a hard time convincing myself to pay $120+ in Zürich for a haircut. ($250+ if I want colour…) I mean, free is free! You try arguing with that.

Four years of dedicated hair growing after the black took two years to grow out.

For the wedding though, I admit I cannot style my hair elegantly enough to make it look fabulous for a whole day and Mr. Funnel Cake thinks I deserve to have someone do my hair and makeup for me on the big day. So I’m searching for stylists willing to get me pretty for my 9 AM sharp church date.

Do you have trouble finding a stylist when you’re used to doing things yourself? What’s the wildest thing you’ve done to your hair? And does anybody know a good reliable Columbus stylist?

I have a couple great stylists here! What part of Columbus are you getting married at?
Mariah at Charles Penzones Grand Salon is great!
http://www.charlespenzone.com/

She is in the Dublin salon, but may be willing to travel, all of their girls are great though!

I hate hair stylists. They can never figure out my hair and always cut it in a way that makes it look awful. Good luck.

OH Miss FC I so wanted to see some of those colored hair shots a little bigger. Lol. I think you deserve to pamper yourself for the wedding especially since you have been so good about not dyeing it all this time…

I wish you luck but I know you will look amazing!

But why not green? :)

I’ve never been to a stylist (my aunt cuts my hair), so I’m very nervous about my hair trial (next week!). Hopefully you’ll get some good suggestions on here!

I have gotten myself into some serious trouble trying to color my own hair - i swear i looked like a caveman for a good 6 months after going black to blonde (don’t ever try it ladies!) it would stretch and break, it was just gross - dreads would have looked better. I still color my own hair but have learned my lesson, i stay away from bleach and stick to darker brown.

I went to OSU and relied on Penzone’s for all my normal hairdressing & highlighting as well as special styling & makeup for sorority and frat formals. LOVE them!! Mario Tricoci (I always mess up their spelling) is also great, but Penzone’s whole heartedly recommend.

I had Paula Suey at Salon Lofts on Henderson in Upper Arlington - she was awesome! She did both my hair and my sister’s and they looked great. Pretty affordable too :-). One of my bridesmaids went to her stylist at Kenneth’s and it looked great too, though I don’t remember who it is.

Is that a Domokun hat I spy? Your hair recovered beautifully–even putting highlights in mine fries it so badly that I’ve given up on adding color to my hair!

I think I know Joan’s secret….

My grandma told me that when she and her daughters were younger (back in the 50’s and 60’s, in the years of impossible beehive’s and other complicated do’s) you would go to the hair salon once a week and have it done.

Then you would sleep with a sleep cap every night, spray the crap out of it, and try not to move in your sleep…. because that hairdo had to last all week :)

Haha, my hair was also every color of the rainbow except green, then black. I am growing it out now, kind of amazed how by long it’s getting. But I wish it was as long as yours!

I’m kind of jealous of your hair rainbow. I never dyed my hair any funky colors, and now that I’m working office jobs, I think I missed my chance! I always wanted pink hair!

I never in a million-zillion years woulda figured you for a blueorpinkoranythingnonstandard hair kinda gal! Good for you!! Fun stuff!

I’m a big ole scaredypants when it comes to hair. Mostly because I’m just not good at doing it myself so it ends up either in a messy bun or pony or its normal, long frizzy but not quite curly down do.

My oldest daughter currently has a deep electric purple color and I think its neat. I use stylist/s everytime I need my hair did for whatever event because I’m all thumbs!

I am so pissed that I didn’t think of Joan Holloway for my hair inspiration!! I would have loved something like that!! My trial was for another idea, though - and given that my wedding is also not near where I live, I can’t really go back and forth to my stylist to try out 19 different looks. :-/ I was able to make one trial happen, though, and I really liked the way the style she did came out, so I guess I will just stick with that because I’m too scared to totally change my look for the big day with no trial run beforehand. :-) Anyway, good luck finding the right stylist, Miss FC!

Since you’re in the Grandview area, I would suggest Salon Lofts off of 5th Ave. You can go to their website and look up each of the stylists.

or if you want to save money, Aveda Institute. That is where I had my hair done for the wedding. They have a free trial.

@Miss Mitzie: Thanks! I’ve heard great things about Penzone, so I will see if they can travel to Grandview or Upper Arlington for the wedding prep.

@Miss Pony: haha, I don’t know, I always figured green wouldn’t look good with my skin tone so I never got around to doing it.

@shushu1208: Thanks! I’ll look them up. :-)

@Mrs. Tartlet: Hehe, that def is a domokun hat you spy. Was on my head for a good part of the growing out years!

@tinylittlebird: Wow, I can’t believe they’d not wash their hair for a week and sleep on it. Somehow I feel like we’re better off now. :P

@Mrs. Hyena: Yeah, I wish I could dye my hair red again but it’s kind of a “no” when you have to see clients and work in an office. :-(

@Silveramos: will do! I would definitely like someone close because the ceremony will start at 9, so I need to get up at the buttcrack of dawn to get ready. :P

I would also recommend Nurtur on Lane… the receptionists are usually pretty good at recommending the right stylist for what you want and the Aveda products always smell so good.

I would highly recommend Laura from The Laura Gregory Salon in Grandview on Goodale!
She is amazing! She worked wonders on my hair color, cut and style. Quality work, laid back atmosphere, affordable. Here’s their facebook site: https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/The-Laura-Gregory-Salon/377156558009

PS I have loved reading all your posts!
