Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich's Picture
Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich, Washington, DC/Cape May, NJ Age and Occupation: 28, School Counselor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 40, Collegiate Athletics Engagement Date: March 27, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Congress Hall Hotel About Me: I am a school counselor who spends my day wrangling children and my nights attempting to be creative with wedding projects. My enthusiasm for each of these activities far surpasses my skill. Thank goodness Mr. Cucumber Sandwich is there to pick up the pieces and be the voice of reason about my DIY tries. I have an obsession with terrible romantic comedies (‘From Justin to Kelly’ anyone?, anyone?!?), competitive Scrabble play, and hot dogs. I could eat astronaut ice cream for every meal and can’t seem to resist buying more shoes. Our wedding is going to be a true hodge podge of semi-destination, tradition, Yuengling, New England charm, with just a dash of ‘Jersey Shore’ thrown in. It has been six years in the making and I can’t wait to marry my best friend.
About Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich

Mr. Cucumber Sammie and I made a quick trip to Cape May the other weekend to interview florists. I can’t wait to share the trip with you, but first I am waiting on my last quote. Two of the florists were good, but one was ah-mazing. Of course that is the one who hasn’t sent me a quote yet. It has been almost three weeks, so I finally broke down and called. I really didn’t want to be “that” bride, but I am starting to get a little nervous they would never get back to me. The florist said they were working on it and would send it today. I still haven’t gotten it yet, but my hopes are not yet crushed.

I am going to share my floral inspiration to hopefully send some good karma in the air and get them to send the quote. In my mind the minute I finish writing this post I will have an email from the florist. Yup, that is totally how it is going to work.

Mr. Cucumber Sammie shocked me the other day by glancing over my shoulder while I was looking at flowers and pointing to this picture. “I really like that,” he said, and I promptly fell out of my chair. I couldn’t/can’t believe he has an opinion about flowers. Since this is probably his one and only floral opinion, I am going to let the florist know we want gutter petals for our ceremony. (Couldn’t they come up with a better name? Gutter petals sounds so gross.)

I would love to do fruit in the glass for the cocktail hour. I am contemplating doing it myself, but I am sure that urge will pass.

Centerpiece inspiration! Big and fluffy is the name of the game. We will probably be using chalkboard table numbers, and stay tuned for when I attempt to DIY table runners.

We have seen this one already. I think I am in love. Yes, decided…in love.

This last one I made entirely from flowers by my favorite florist (the one who is slipping away), just so when we went to meet with her I could show her some examples of what I liked from her work. In almost all of the appointments we talked about doing my bouquet similar to the one on the bottom left. Except instead of purple it would be in our color, orange!

And there you have it…everything we showed the florists.

So what do you think—should I give up on my favorite florist even though I heart them? It has been about three weeks, which is not a crazy amount of time to wait, but it is still a little concerning if they are going to be our florist. Have you ever overlooked some possible vendor flaws because you adored the vendor’s work?

I’m not sure what an appropriate time is but that does seem a little long to me but idk. I’m a little impatient. Customer service is a HUGE flaw for me that I can’t over look. I gave up on one of my top choices for a venue because of it. They didnt keep appt, didnt call back, and even act like I was bothering them. So certain things I can’t over look.

I, unfortunately, have had to let a couple vendors pass by because of their inability to return emails/phone calls in a timely manner. In terms of quote, though, it never took any vendor longer than a week or two to get back to me with a quote after I discussed what I wanted with them. But maybe with a florist, its different? Maybe they’re searching for wholesalers who can give them the best prices on the flowers?

I really hope you didn’t give them your floral budget up front. I found when we did that, they magically made their quotes just a few dollars under it. :(

Our florist came back with a quote the same night we met with him, I was so impressed I knew we had to book him. I usually take late emails as a sign and don’t book the person. They should be working to get your money, you should not have to work to get a quote. I hope this florist came back with a quote quickly after this post!

i interviewed several florists as well. i was a little grumpy with how long one of them took (3-4 weeks) to get back to me, but her purposal was so detailed and so spot-on, i had to choose her. i’ve planned everything with her thru email and it usually takes her about 3 weeks to get back to me. but every time she does, she impresses me. (and she has a ton of experience and stellar ratings on weddingwire.com.) the slow responses have been worth it for me. so remember to judge a florist by their flowers. if a florist is so not busy they can get back to you in less than 24 hours, you have to ask yourself, where’s the rest of their business? it might be a bad sign.

For me personally, I would move on to someone else. I hate when vendors take forever to respond, especially when you haven’t even booked them yet and they should be trying to woo you! And you don’t want to stress about their slacking when it’s actually close to your wedding date and you need something from them and don’t get an answer. My florist gave me a quote during our consultation, right on the spot, and I was pretty impressed. There’s so many great florists out there, I’d find someone else. Sorry!

Poor communication is usually a red flag for me, too. :( I hope that you’ve heard back from your florist!

Yeah … we had to let some go because of poor communication as well. Your business is clearly not that important to them if they can’t respond to a freaking e-mail. Argh.

I love gutter petals (apparently… I didn’t know that’s what they were called!) but I haven’t gotten to the point where I’m willing to add on the cost. Give me about 5 more pictures like these, and you can bet I will. ;)

I also hate it when vendors refuse to communicate. Luckily, we haven’t had that happen - the only vendor who sort of dropped the ball was hair and makeup, after I booked her, and she had actually responded to my emails but for some reason I hadn’t gotten it.

Anyway, I’m about to read your next florist post, so I can get the second half!
