Camera Conundrum

July 14th, 2011 @ 4:34 pm by Mrs. Cinnamon Bun

So as you may or may not know, it is Stampede time here in “Cow-town.” Everyone turns into cowboys and people are drunk at all hours of the day. But, there are redeeming things too, like deep-fried Oreos:

Vintage tractors:

Certain visiting royal persons:

And the Stampede Parade:

I took all the pictures above myself, which leads me to my latest problem. Parade day was hella windy, and super dusty. There were cowboy hats flying everywhere, along with lots of lovely sand still on the road from the winter. And, as I was taking pictures at said parade (I had to get one of the pancake girls to prove I wasn’t hallucinating, but I missed the one dressed as a taco) grit inevitably got into my camera. Now, it’s no fancy DSLR, but it is my camera! I like it! It’s a Sony DSC H-3, and I bought it about four years ago. One of the reasons I bought that one was the 10x zoom—it was the biggest zoom I could find and it seemed useful. And, I use the zoom a lot. You think I was that close to the Duke and Duchess? Nope, that’s 10x optical zoom for you! It also has 8 megapixels, which at the time, was impressive. Now that’s what you find in cellphones!

Camera Conundrum : wedding calgary photography 5936240 sonyh3_3q-001

(source of photo, ’cause I can’t take a photo of my own camera!)

Only now when I zoom, there’s a nasty little grinding noise, and once so far it has actually been briefly stuck all the way out. I went to a local camera store, and they don’t do camera repair there, so it would be $40 to send it out, plus whatever the repair cost would be. When I told the guy it just made a noise, and only one time out of 10 would actually stick/hinder picture-taking, he said to save my $40. If they send it out and the repair guys can’t make the sticking happen, then it’ll just come back the same as it was and I’ll be $40 out. Camera guy said to keep using it until it was sticky all the time. Now that kinda sounds like the type of advice that will just lead to me buying a new camera…which is a little exciting. Four years is old in current technology terms, right? I could have a new toy! There’s just so much choice these days, and I keep waffling on what I want, what I think I should want, or whether I should just keep using Sony McGrindy until it gets perma-stuck. I’ll tell you the problem with that last option right now: mini-honeymoons this summer. I’ll want a working camera for that.

If I do get a new camera, what do I go for? That’s the biggest conundrum right now. I feel like I need to sit down and write down all my options and the pros and cons of each.

Are you considering a new camera in honor of your wedding/honeymoon? What did you choose and why?

well… considering my camera just officially bit the dust on our minimoon- new camera, here I come! =) I want to get a really really nice DSLR, but for now I will probably settle with a higher end lower cost point-and-shoot variety.

After years of renting DSLR cameras, we just bought a Canon EOS 60D and love love it. I have a photography degree and I shoot weddings, so having a DSLR was a must for me. FI is a novice photographer, but he loves the camera and it’s easy for him to use!

I recommend a DSLR just for the versatility that it provides, and I prefer Canon over Nikon.

I have no idea what camera to get, but I’d love to know how to use a DSLR. For our honeymoon, we got a waterproof point and click. It’s awesome.

If you don’t want to upgrade all the way to a DSLR, look into the Canon G12. It can shoot manual, but it’s small and you don’t need to cart around additional lenses.

I just bought a new camera and love it! I used it for the first time yesterday. Had a 10 megapix before…this one is 14 with 18x optical zoom - it’s great and not very expensive…
Fujifilm FinePix S2800HD - here’s its info:

Sporting a 14-megapixel 1/2.3″ CCD, a powerful Fujinon 18x wide-angle optical zoom and an extra large 3.0″ high-contrast LCD and electronic viewfinder, the FinePix S2800HD is perfect for advanced amateur photographers who want an affordable, step-up digital camera that will still fit in the palm of their hand.To provide perfectly exposed and focused portrait shots, the FinePix S2800HD is fitted with Fujifilm’s Face Detection technology which is able to track up to 10 faces simultaneously, at almost any angle to the camera. The system instantly corrects red-eye and then saves both the original and the corrected image file automatically.

Our latest camera purchase was the Canon S95. Being photography nerds (we also own 2 SLRs - Canon 5D MkII), we also wanted a point and shoot that will also shoot in RAW for maximum flexibility in post-processing. We brought one SLR and the point and shoot with us on our honeymoon and used one or both depending on where we were.

Another camera we may consider in the future is the Sony NEX. DH thinks it’s so fantastic that it may even replace our SLRs in the future. Basically, it does everything an SLR can, but it’s more compact because the shutter mechanism doesn’t use a mirror. We know pro photographers who have one and they also think it takes amazing photos and swear by it when they travel.

If you want somethign for honeymoon fun, I would look intot he Fuji XD waterproof edition. I got DH one as a wedding present and it was a lot of fun on our honeymoon. It’s not fancy but takes great photos and is sand, water and cold proof making it a great little put it in your pocket and do everything camera. It went snorkeling and hung out in the pool a lot on our honeymoon. We recently took it on some day hiking and once again were super happy with its performance. It is not a substitute for your current camera but a nice addition and I think the price has even gone down to $150 making it an affordable second camera and great back up option in case yours stops working.

This SAME thing happened to my camera while on vacation in Hawaii. I guess sand is sand, no matter where you are! Well, I never sent it to be fixed… and that was in the summer of 2008. It still works! Other than the obnoxious noise. This summer I did decide to upgrade to a DSLR, but I still use my little point and shoot, too. Hopefully yours will be ok.

I’m thinking about purchasing a Leica digital camera.

I just sold my canon 5d since I won’t be shooting anymore events and so far I’ve read fantastic things about the leica.

Gah, I need a new camera too. Mine got moisture inside and ruined the auto-focus sensor (lazy & nearsighted = me) a month before our wedding.

We got a new DSLR as a bit of a splurge around the time of the wedding. I wanted one for a while and Mr. E said what better time to get one then to capture pictures during the wedding weekend. :)

We bought a Canon G11 last summer while on vacation because our old camera just wasn’t cutting it anymore (terrible in low light and with motion). I’m nowhere near a camera expert, but it’s been reliable and takes great pictures under many different conditions!

@ritsi_bitsi: How funny you should mention the Nex, that’s the one I want! If I don’t go for a tiny, slim point & shoot. argh, decisions are so hard!
@NC Girl: Good to know that your camera is still going! It give me hope for mine, but now I’ve got this ‘new camera’ bug in my head…

We upgraded from a point&shoot to a DSLR just last month. We agreed that we were going to get a nicer camera for our Hawaiian honeymoon- those pictures need to last forever! I bought the Nikon D3100 and it is FANTASTIC! Its an entry-level DSLR and I’m so glad we made the switch!

My camera has a 10X zoom too and I love the way I can get close to things without trying. My only compliant my FH broke the lens cap so I fear I will have the same problem very soon.
