Ace at the Market

July 15th, 2011 @ 4:05 pm by Mrs. High Wire

What would you guess I am doing this Saturday if my local forecast looked like this?

A. Swimming?

B. Enjoying Harry Potter 7.2 in the cool air conditioning?

C. How about heading to an outdoor flea market?

If you guessed C, you are correct (seeing HP7 on Sunday with the MOH). I’m grabbing my hat, swinging by the ATM, and heading to a local flea market a few towns over. It is going to be HOT, I know, but I’ve got to finish up picking up decor goodies for the wedding before it is too late! This flea market only pops up once a month, so my next shot at it is in mid-August. And it might be even HOTTER if I wait until then. Yuck.

To keep myself on target, I’m going to gather up all the decor we’ve collected so far and figure out what elements of the venue are still in the need of a sweet ceramic bird or a vintage horseshoe.

Thinking about heading to your local antique shop or flea market? Remember the following:

  1. Bring cash - many booths might have credit card machines, but it is better to be safe than sorry. You also might need to pay a few dollars for parking.
  2. Don’t be afraid to haggle - this is one if the prime places to get more bang for less buck
  3. Look past minor surface flaws - these are the best treasures to re-paint, re-finish, and make your own!
  4. 4. Wear comfortable clothes and if you are outside in triple degree temps, make sure to stay hydrated!!

Do you frequent local flea markets? What are your best tips?

Bring your own grocery bag! I hate having a million plastic ones, or someone doesn’t have any. Its so much easier to bring my own

I love the thrill of the hunt, but not in that heat! Only thing I’d be hunting for is the ice cream booth. ;)

Oh my gosh, you’re a trooper haha I could never handle that kind of heat @ a flea market! This is a great idea though, I may have to check out my local flea market to see if I can find any wedding things on the cheap, I never would have thought to check there :)

As much as I love flea markets and antiques, it just doesn’t appeal to me in that kind of temperatures. You are one brave lady! I hope you get some awesome finds!

I was on Craigslist one afternoon looking for a deal of my own, and a bride had posted a Wanted To Buy listing for milk glass… Three days later I just happened to make a spontaneous stop at a local flea market and found a whole box of beautiful pieces, must have come from an estate sale. The price marked was a pretty good deal, but then after a bit more dollar haggling I took it home. Shot her an email that night and two days later she picked them up. Don’t make me out to be a saint… I did turn quite a little profit — it’s all about supply and demand.
