Mrs. Ladyfingers's Picture
Mrs. Ladyfingers, Saint Petersburg, FL Age and Occupation: 30, Marketing Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Sports Writer Engagement Date: December 24, 2010 Wedding Date: November 2011 Venue: Palma Sola Botanical Park About Me: I hail from Oklahoma, he was born and raised in Long Island. Fate brought us together, and now we live in a cute little rental house with our nutty dog, and our aloof cat. We both love to read, watch movies, explore our town, and laugh like hyenas. When I’m not obsessively wedding crafting, I enjoy stalking style and decorating blogs, making collages and painting, napping, thrifting, rearranging our bookshelves, and being a total weirdo with my friends. Hi!
About Mrs. Ladyfingers

I have a problem.

I really really really REAAAAAAAAALLY really like sweaters. Cardigans, to be more precise. And I live in Florida.

*hangs head*

This obsession has been met with everything from admonishment—“STOP BUYING THRIFT-STORE CARDIGANS IN THE DEAD OF SUMMER.”—to adoration: “I saw a cardigan you’d love!”

I was especially enamored of Mrs. Cardigan’s approach to wedding-day cover up and, emboldened by my on-the-fencedness when it comes to my strapless dress, I’ve been stalking photos of brides in cardigans for months now.

Uh, did I mention we live in Florida?

Still, I can’t get over this look. I use cardigans to dress up and dress down a number of outfits. I recently started to participate in Kendi’s 30-for-30 remix and seriously, guys, four of my 30 items are cardigans. And it’s almost July. It’s not even cold in my office. In fact, it’s hot. This is obscene.

But. Want more convincing that I should indeed rock a cardigan on the day of? I thought you’d never ask:

So, this is the perfect one. Perfect length, perfect sleeves, perfect beading. This is what I want. / Photo via Ruffled / Photo by Kate Harrison

But what about something like this pretty print? Especially since it’s hot pink… / Image via The Bride’s Café / Photo by Shannon Nicole Smith

At first I thought my best shot would be a vintage number. On Etsy alone, you get more than 300 results when searching for cardigans in the vintage section. Like, f’rinstance, this number.

But seeing as how vintage cardigans can so often fit funky—not a slim enough silhouette, too long weird sleeves, too hot acrylic with lining—I’d either have to scour vintage stores around here or shop new. Summer’s probably not the best time to be looking, but…

This is adorable, along the lines of the short-sleeved one up top, and it comes in a cute-as-a-button color. But I’m not sure it’s fancy enough for a ceremony. / Image via Nordstrom

Love Me, Love Me, Say That You Love Me... : wedding accessories saint petersburg Lady7 lady7

This. Is. Perfect. But Kate, why must you taunt me with your lovely garb and your exceedingly high price tags? I thought we were friends, but $300 for a cardigan—that, I cannot abide. / Image via Nordstrom

This is charming and looks quite breathable, but I’m not a fan of the light pink color for our wedding. / Image via Nordstrom

At first I thought I wouldn’t wear the cardigan for the ceremony, but given that I can get slightly fancier options, I do like that idea. Cardigans are *me*. It’s my look. I’d really love to bring a little of that into the wedding day, while keeping it classy.

I realize a few things. One, I may be sweating like a pig that day. Two, it may be a little warm still in November in Florida. Three, how do I try on cardigans to find the perfect one that works with my dress? It’s not like I can take the dress to the department store and try it on with the cover ups. I also don’t love the idea of buying cardigans with the possibility of returning them because, again, it means I’d need to continue slipping in and out of my dress, which I’m terrified to do. And four, will a cardigan obstruct the lovely corset back?

What do you think? Do you love the cardigan look? Hate it? How would I try it on to find the perfect one? Am I weird? It’s OK, you can say so.

I always thought wedding cardigans were super-cute, especially when they’re of the yellow variety. You definitely want to be comfortable on your wedding day, though. If you happen to hate being sweaty or are really worried about covering up the back, maybe you could just wear it during photos and have it off for the ceremony itself?

I, too, love the cardigan look!! Love it. We are marrying in January in Colorado, however, so cardigans are almost a necessity :) As for trying them on, it sounds like the most practical would be stock up on multiples and that way you only have to put your dress on a couple times…with your dress being strapless, do you actually need to have it on when trying on cardigans?
Anyway good luck, can’t wait to see what you decide :)

Love the cardigan look (as I sit here wearing one at work.) I’m rocking a shrug for our ceremony and reception, and a cardigan for our day-after shoot.

I LOVE THIS. I am getting married in December in CT and we are all wearing cropped cardigans. I am wearing a light gray one because my dress has silver beading and the girls are wearing black ones like this: http://www.thelimited.com/detail/banded-bolero/5845979

We will not wear them in the ceremony, only for some pictures outside and then whenever we want because we are cold :)

I’m kind of not a fan of the cardigan for weddings. The fun of your wedding is you get to play dress up and not wear things you’d wear in every day life. I wear cardigans to work weekly, I wouldn’t want to do that at my wedding!

Worst case scenario with cardigans that don’t work out? You keep them. :) I think you’ve already established that wouldn’t be bad at all!

Why not take it off for the reception or rock it during the reception (since it will be later)? Also think Bunting’s idea of just in photos works! The short sleeved ones would help with the “hot” too. If the corset back was important to me, I’d showcase it during the ceremony. Are you game for embroidering beads?

I am pro-cardigan, but in Florida, I’d suggest you go maybe for something crocheted–the big gaps will be a lot less suffocating than a full-on sweater. Etsy has a lot of options.

Hmmmm depending on when in November your wedding day is, you’re right: it might be hot here still! However, you could always buy a cardigan and wear it for pictures if it would be too hot to wear the rest of the day. I brought a pashmina with me to the ceremony/reception venue for our wedding, but I was so toasty from dancing and having a good time that I never needed it (although, our wedding was in May)!

@MissMusic: Hey…that icon picture of yours looks familiar… ;)

They’re super nice. When I was searching for cover ups, this option crossed my mind. Lengths and such were tricky.
Ever consider semi-constructing yours? (That’s if you have craftiness about you) Or..

I’ve seen lace backed cardi’s .. searching them may end indecision. They’re unbelievably cute and pose little to none on the being hot factor.

I love the cardigan look; mainly because it is such a statement about the personality of the bride. I like it looks sweet and relaxed and real. Maybe I’m just biased because I wore a cardigan at my wedding? ;)

I took a cardigan I owned that I liked with me when I tried on dresses and then used that as a guideline for picking out patterns for my wedding cardigan (a friend knitted one for me!) Do you have any more fittings? Bring a “sample” with you and you can see if you want shorter sleeves, longer waist length, etc.

As for being too hot, I can’t help out there. We married outdoors in October in the mountains, so I wore mine during the ceremony and for some pictures. I took it off at the reception - too hot with all that dancing - and then wore it again during the late-night after party. Maybe you can wear it for some pictures and then outdoors in the evening? Does it get breezy at all in Florida?

I love love love brides with cardigans. As for trying them on - you can’t bring your dress to the store, but maybe you can bring the cardigans to your dress and try them on at a fitting? I’d just worry that I’d be tempted to keep them all instead of returning the ones that didn’t work with the dress.

I’m not a fan since they turn a beautiful dress into something ordinary and too casual. They remind me of girls going to special dances or proms in high school and wearing winter jackets over them. A beautiful bolero I can appreciate, but not a longer styled cardigan.

I LOVE cardigans! I have since I was like 14. lol
I think I’m going to do the same thing, or at least get a fancy bolero or something.

Well I went poking around and I came across these short sleeve cardigan’s at Banana Republic
Perhaps you could dd some embellishment on on them or change out the buttons for a more glam look

I love the Lovefool reference:-) I adore the wedding dress/cardigan combo, but for me I didn’t think it worked for my dress - plus my wedding was in July in Texas!

Have you considered a shrug (a short backed cardigan)? Then you would still see all the beauty that is a lace-up back dress (as long as you find one that is short enough), still cover your shoulders/arms, and they’re cute, especially in a half-sleeve length.

The cardigan look is super cute. :) I bet you can find one in a light enough material to work for Florida, even if it’s warm!
