About Mrs. Cinnamon Bun

There’s so many options out there! I have so many conflicting thoughts about what I think I want too, which doesn’t help.

My current camera:

Camera Options…and Options…and Options : wedding calgary photography 593624001 sonyh3_3q-001

The Sony DSC H3 (image from dpreview)

It’s a little larger than your average point-and-click. Sometimes I have felt hampered in that I can’t quite put it in the pocket of my jeans, or into a small purse. I have in the past considered buying a camera like this one:

The Sony HX7V (Image from Future Shop)

That way I could have something tiny, that could fit into small pockets and purses. That always seemed like a waste of money though, when I had a perfectly good camera that is really only marginally bigger.

This makes it sound easy, right? Buy the wee one that has now progressed to be better than your current one. Deal done. Sadly, my brain does not make it that easy. I have also wanted to get more in to photography, to learn about aperture and f stops and bokeh and just be able to take better pictures, and understand how to control the camera more. I have no aspirations of becoming a pro, so a giant DSLR is just not worth it for me. But…companies are starting to come out with cameras that look like this:

Camera Options…and Options…and Options : wedding calgary photography 593624002 ZNEX5WLENSES-S

The Sony NEX 5 (image from Imaging Resource)

Wee digital bodies barely bigger than the blue camera above, but you have interchangeable lenses, and more ability to control the camera manually! This one in particular, the NEX 5 has me really entranced. I tried one out in a store, and I loved the feel of being able to manually focus, the sensor is one like you find in ‘proper’ DSLRs, interchangeable lenses! The thing with this one though is that when the camera has the ‘pancake’ lens attached (the one on the camera in the photo) it’s about the size of my current camera. The on that I sometimes wondered about being too big. You put any other lens on it, and it is bigger even than that. Would I take it places?

I was feeling really conflicted about what I wanted to do, so I was talking about it with Cinnamon Buns, complaining that I really liked the NEX, but it can get so big, I’d probably carry a smaller one more often, wah wah wah… Then he said pointed out that if I’m concerned about wanting a really convenient camera for crazy stuff that comes up when you’re just out shopping or walking to work, what about taking the cell phone camera into consideration? And that little comment slowly but surely changed my thinking on the matter. I found specs for the next iPhone, reportedly coming out this fall, and it is (apparently, I don’t know how reliable these rumours are) going to have an 8MP camera! My current contract is up this winter.

I’m starting to think that the NEX 5 will satisfy my urge to learn more about photography, take great pictures on vacations, of meals I cook, of places I go, things I make, etc. It wouldn’t live in permanently in my purse like a wee point-and-shoot might, but if I ran into a “OMG THAT’S MICK JAGGER” moment (or whatevs. You know.) I would always have my iPhone on me for that type of thing.

So that’s my thinking at this moment. Leaning towards the NEX 5, but still not read to pull the trigger on the purchase. Also helpful was Weddingbee user ritsi_bitsi’s comment on my last post telling me to check out the NEX! It’s like she was in my mind (or at least my browser history). Is it some sort of sign?!

Price, of course, does come in to this equation. The wee blue camera is listed at $349, and the NEX 5 is listed at $799 on the Sony website. Shopping around, I’ve seen the blue one for $200+, and the NEX 5 + one lens for $600. Neither is a $1000+ DSLR, but $600 is not a small chunk of change, especially after a wedding! (And, I realise that there are some DSLRs at the $600 mark—but they’re too big. This one is on the edge of my comfort zone for ‘too big’).

Has anyone tried out the Sony NEX 5? Do you like it? Do I really need another hobby?!

I absolutely recommend looking into Micro Four Thirds cameras. I own one (A Panasonic Lumix G10) and really like it. I think the size is nice and portable. Also, the ability to swap out lenses is a big plus, but I would encourage you to look at the price of adapters because sometimes they can be quite steep, which is discouraging. Amazon Warehouse Deals is a great site to check out if you are willing to buy used. Also B&H Photo has a wide selection of used cameras, including lots and lots of Micro Four Thirds. I did a lot of research before buying mine and I do believe that they can be on par with lower-mid model DSLRs. The lens is the really important part, so if you feel like you’re not getting the shots you want, you might want to upgrade the lens! I think photography is a great hobby to have and I suspect that you will be quite pleased with any camera that you might choose. After all, it really is about the person behind the camera, not the device itself :)

My FI has one similar to the NEX5, the Panasonic GF1. He really likes it, and it takes great pics. But it is definitely not the kind of camera you can just put in your pocket.

He has the pancake lens and a larger lens with zoom. The pancake is great for size and under certain lighting/distance conditions, but it has no zoom. So unless you’re absolutely certain what you’re going to be photographing won’t need a zoom, you have to go out with a camera bag and the bigger lens.

My parents have the NEX5 and we took it on our honeymoon along with our Canon G11. They only had the basic ‘pancake’ lens, and although it took some beautiful shots, we were constantly wanting for more zoom. Great for panoramic shots, fantastic quality video (although not compatible with the iPad), and quality reaction time. Mr. Tartlet would prefer that we have one of those, but the G11 is still a little easier for me to point-and-shoot. Let me know if you’d like to see some pictures comparing the two cameras!

I wanted to mention the NEX5 on your last post but I forgot the name. We just bought this for my DH’s dad and i got to try it out for a weekend in San Francisco. First, you should know the lens that comes with it (at least from Best Buy) is not the small one but the silver one to the right in your photo. To buy the small one and essentially shoot without zoom involves an extra purchase which I think runs around $250 (it was an online only option and the store didn’t list the price). We spent a lot of time looking at this and the NEX3. If you are worried about the cost, consider the NEX3, at $100 less it has basically all the same features except the body is plastic and I think it shoots one speed slower than the 5. We wanted to buy the 3 after talking to the saleswoman about both but it was not in stock and we were under time pressure. Anyway, I took the camera around for 2 days and was pleasantly surprised. I normally use a point and shoot but have borrowed DSLRs from friends before and didn’t quite get the idea of not getting an actual DSLR before playing with this camera. It’s actually way lighter than I imagined and I had no problem wearing it on my neck all day although the lense is rather long so I felt like I needed to hold it. The camera has a really quick shutter speed and truly shoots like a SLR (you can hear it). It is also a lot easier to use than a SLR in that is gives you tips on screen and explains the features well. The zoom is great, completely hand controlled so you will need two hands but it’s such a nice feature. Also, I imagine it has imigae stabilization as I took several photos while moving and they came out great. I shot mostly outdoors in day to dusk and never used the flash but it comes with an external flash. I also took some close ups of DH as well as flowers and played around with the manual focus and was quite happy with the how sharp the photos came out. Overall, I would receommend this camera if you’re considering a SLR but are not sure you want to commit to learning the features as this didn’t sacrafice quality and was so easy to use I could take it out of a box and go. You will need a case to carry this as it does not fit in your pocket and I don’t think it’s compact enough to feel safe in a purse but I just packed the camera case into my tote and tucked it away when I was done. PM me if you have specific questions and maybe I can answer, we still have the camera.

I registered for the NEX 5 on amazon.com and I really hope we get it. We did a lot of research and know it’s the camera for us. Look on amazon.com as there are some great packages that will hook you up with the camera and lenses and a bag for a really good price.

We just bought a Canon Power Shot SC210 IS this past Christmas. We wanted a small camera with the best zoom we could find. It has 14x optical zoom & 14.1 megapixels. I don’t remember how much we paid for it. We’re happy with it, but it’s no NEX. That camera looks amazing!
