After we said the “Ja” word, we gathered to take a few pictures outside the Verwaltungszentrum Werd and I had an inkling that something suspicious was up…

Little did we know, we were being watched!
The only witnesses of our sneaky intimate Zivilstand.
Mr. Funnel Cake and I were basking in the warm glow of our legal union when confetti cannons boomed and several men in green swarmed in as the heart-shaped confetti rained down.
What’s happening??
It was Mr. Funnel Cake’s army troop!!
Normally the guys will actually parachute to weddings and land with champagne and roses for the couple, but because they didn’t have time to plan a jump (especially in the middle of the city) they surprised us with an army trunk full of fresh fruit, champagne and Swiss army chocolate!
The surprise was incredibly sweet and Mr. Funnel Cake couldn’t stop beaming!
So instead of heading to lunch, we stopped to have a little unplanned cocktail hour, known as an “apero” in Switzerland.
Getting married in the troop is actually a pretty big thing. That’s why Mr. Funnel Cake wanted to get married on the 17th—it’s the number of his army troop. Popular day for these guys!
…and have you noticed the pink helmets yet? My parents had…
Mr. Funnel Cake had to explain to my parents the tradition behind the pink helmet. Whenever someone in the troop gets married, the pink helmets are passed down to the groom. One is a trophy to display proudly at home (honestly!?) and the other is worn by the last man married when the troop parachutes to the next wedding. I think the previous groom got away with his pink helmet jump because there was no parachuting to our wedding, but you can bet Mr. Funnel Cake would be wearing this on his next wedding jump! Both the helmets have the dates and names of everyone in the troop who’s been married.
Wearing his “trophy” helmet with gold script lettering, I love him anyhow.
Papa and Mama Funnel Cake, me and Mr. FC’s mother
My parents were very impressed by the display of the guys and even more so by the sudden realisation that they now have a son-in-law in the army. Pretty new to them since no one in our family is in the army!
When we’d eaten all the fruit and drunk our fill, it was time to bid goodbye to the guys and head to lunch.
Did you have any big surprises on your special day?
