Hi!
About Mrs. Ladyfingers

All in the name of fitting into a wedding dress while feeling good about myself, I started exercising almost immediately after Mr. Ladyfingers put a ring on it. I’d never been much of an exerciser, nor a dieter. I’ve been lucky to have never struggled with body image, unlike so many of my friends, but for about a year before the engagement, I’d really been letting myself go. When my clothes stopped fitting me, when I started eating a candy bar and a bag of chips every day, when I grabbed fast food on my way from one place to another four out of seven days a week, when I bought Ben and Jerry’s by the twos and sometimes even ate two dinners in one night—one at around 5 PM and another at 10 when I got home…well, it made me feel super crappy about myself.

I’d promised various things over the years and never followed through on any of them. I walked for about three days back in ’05 and stopped because it rained on the fourth day. I accompanied a couple of different friends over the years on free gym passes and quit because gyms freak me out. I vowed to start taking yoga classes but could never find the money or the time. But now, I was willing.

One late night, when were in Wal-Mart buying the latest version of Trivial Pursuit, I made an impulse buy: Two Jillian Michaels DVDs, a yoga DVD, and some five-pound weights.

After six-ish months of working out sorta regularly, I’m here to share with you what’s worked, what hasn’t, and how I feel about my pre-wedding-day fitness extravaganza.

Disclaimer: I’m not a trainer, or a doctor, or even mildly knowledgable about fitness or the human body, so this post isn’t intended to serve as workout advice. You’ve been warned!

Jillian Michaels’s 30-Day Shred

The 30-Day Shred is based on circuit training (I think). You do one round of exercises, repeat it, and move on to the next round. The 30-Day Shred is split into three phases; the intention is you take about 10 days to “master” each phase before moving on to the next. Each workout is only about 20 minutes, but it’s a super-intense 20 minutes. I never thought I could sweat so much in my entire life—and I drove a black car with no AC in Florida for three years, so that’s some serious sweating. She alternates cardio and core work with weights, which supposedly helps you burn fat a lot faster.

I seriously started seeing results RIGHT away. As in, within a couple of days. I’m not claiming this is typical! But because I’d been sedentary for, um, 30 years, it didn’t take much to make small inroads on my hip padding and that roll developing at the back of my natural waist.

Soon, though, I grew bored. I didn’t exactly master phases one or two—I was still doing modified versions of each of the exercises—but I decided to move on to Jillian’s Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism.

Jillian Michaels’s Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism

This absolutely took things up a notch. This workout is roughly 40 minutes, not including warm up and cool down, and again uses circuit training to keep blood flowing constantly to different parts of your body. There’s no weights in this one, with the exercises using your body’s own resistance to build strength and muscles. You don’t move from phase to phase, either, although the DVD has options for only doing certain circuits.

There are six circuits in this one—kickboxing, plyometrics (or jump training), calisthenics (running in place, jumping jacks), core work, and then kickboxing/plyo/calisthenics again. It took me many days before I could get through the entire 40 minutes, much less without taking breaks. But I REALLY loved this one—I always felt super proud of myself when I finished it, and each move doesn’t really last that long, so it was easy for me to push myself because I knew it was almost over.

The Jillian combo package

Eventually, I started alternating the 30-Day Shred and BFBM…and then I hit a snag. I hurt my ankle one night and kept working out the following night. I ended up with a swollen, useless, pathetic limb and couldn’t work out for about two weeks. But in that two weeks, I *missed* working out. Woo-hoo! I’d officially rewired my brain chemistry.

P90X

Let’s Get Physical, Physical : wedding health saint petersburg Lady4 lady4

Once my ankle recovered, I decided to move to the next level of intensity: P90X. Mr. Ladyfingers had lost about 30 pounds in six months on these DVDs, and I liked that each day has a different focus so you don’t strain yourself. It helps that there’s a few days’ break between the upper-body DVDs, for example, because my little twig arms cannot do pushups for too many days in a row.

I started with the Lean routine, which is designed to build lean muscle rather than bulk. Here’s what I love about home-based workouts (aside from not having to display my clumsiness to anyone outside Mr. Ladyfingers, our cat, and our dog): there’s a rotating cast of quirky characters on every DVD, and it’s endlessly entertaining. I’d find myself saying things to Mr. Ladyfingers like, “I just noticed last time I did Core that Dreya totally tries to hug Adam, and he kinda blows her off and then goes to give Pam a hug,” or, “Did you notice that Dreya totally starts wiping her brow during the VERY FIRST move in Legs and Back?” or, “Dreya seems so effing proud of herself every time Tony talks to her in Shoulders and Arms. I hate her.”

Notice a pattern? I’m not a big Dreya fan.

I “sort of” finished Lean (Did I often skip workout days? Yes. Yes, I did.), and now I’m in the middle of P90X Classic. I’m also doing Jillian’s Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism on the P90X Plyo, Cardio, and Kenpo days because P90X cardio leaves me shuddering in a corner for hours.

Results? I’ve lost 15 pounds in the past six months and feel leaps and bounds better about myself. My skin looks better, and I feel healthier. I don’t eat junk food (much). I miss working out if I skip it for too many days in a row. I always feel better when I do it, and worse when I don’t.

What’s your pre-wedding fitness routine? Do you have a hard time getting motivated? If this was a new endeavor for you, as it was for me, what have you tried that works and doesn’t?

I’ve done the P90X videos and found myself talking to the people in them.

“NO TONY! I don’t want to superman/bananna”
“Dreya, Could you please were a full length shirt for once, your abs make me hate myself!”

I also learned the words to all of the video’s in the Lean program. I would recite them as I did the videos…I annoyed myself while doing P90X.

That’s pretty amazing with the 15lbs weight loss! Keep up the good work

Incredible! I’m in the middle of Jillian’s Ripped in 30. This one has four workouts, and I’ve finished the first two which totally kicked my booty and I definitely recommend it if you’re looking to add something else to the mix.

I’ve tried P90X but I got bored with it really quickly. Not that it’s not challenging, but I have fitness ADD…Pretty much the only thing I like to do over and over is jog on the treadmill. My favorite DVD though is from The Firm. I like Interval training with it’s 3 minutes of high intensity cardio and then 1 minute of weight training. That’s the only way I do weights anymore, otherwise the ADD kicks in high gear.

Oh, P90X– I can still never get over being outdone by a guy with one leg. It makes me feel like a workout failure if I need to take a break and the guy with 1 leg is still going strong.

@Petunia123: Haha! This made me laugh so hard. I also frequently say: “SHUT.UPPP.” while trying to do the side arm balance in yoga as he yaks his face off… and Mr. and I do a lot of the funnies right before they happen, like… “German potato soup!” and
“Ab Ripper X: I hate it… but I love it.” ;)

@Toralina: If there’s a will, there’s a way! Find something you love - Netflix has a ton of “watch instantly” options. I can highly recommend the Ellen Barrett videos :) (also, why do I still call them videos even though nobody makes videos anymore?)

@EJeets10: Sweet, thanks for the recommendation!

@ms_nickie: I also got bored with P90 over time and have just recently started mixing it up a bit more. I’ll probably follow this up at a later post with some of my newest discoveries, but one of the things I like about Jillian over Tony is that her moves never last that long. I particularly hate the P90 videos where you repeat moves. Ugh!

@MsTerrapin: I KNOW! I couldn’t ever get through more than 10 minutes of plyo, so I didn’t have to suffer the silent shame much, but I know it’s there. Also, did you know that guy is in Super Troopers?

Great job, Ladyfingers! I, too, have been doing a pre-wedding (and pre-dress fitting) workout routine. I like the Shred, but I found it was better for toning than overall weight loss. Once I added cardio, some of those pesky pounds started coming off, and you could finally see the muscles I built up doing the Shred.

Classic! I also am not a Dreya fan, I love Pam the Blam! And my favorite Tony line is “Tip of the day… DON’T SMASH YOUR FACE!” I love P90X for the same reasons you do, and I love that it’s a relatively fun and not too intense routine that is great for life in general, not just fitting into a wedding gown. Whenever I do it, I just notice that I’m more toned and can get out of bed easier and feel just a bit better about myself! Keep up the good work! Congrats on 15 pounds!!

Totally inspired! Did you start out doing the 30-Day shread every day or every other day?
Your post inspired me to try it and after one go-round my glutes are aching so badly I’m not sure I could do it again tomorrow (much less get out of this desk chair).

Awesome job!

Like a lot of folks, I get bored easily and tend to get nit-picky with the workout hosts over time. Just this past week, though, I’ve worked out 6 of the 7 days (Friday night is a planned break, not a slack) and did something different each time which kept it fun.

30 Day Shred is my Wednesday work-out (there’s no way I’m doing it every day for a month) because it leaves me absolutely wiped–mentally and physically–and Wednesdays are mostly veg nights anyway. I’m loving all the dance cardio via Netflix, though, if nothing else that will keep things interesting!

I’m a big fan of the gym, but I have to have the time for it, and I started working/doing night classes last fall for regular 15-hour days. So I couldn’t squeeze it in anymore. Despite not being in classes this summer I’m still not going, because I really only enjoy the gym if I’m there with my fiance, and right now he’s doing a summer internship and commuting for 4 hours a day on top of an 8-hour workday.

Come fall, I’ll be in class again, though he won’t be commuting anymore, so it’ll still just be him (and he doesn’t go by himself, either).

So I tried a few things. So far, the best luck I’ve had is with this funky little home elliptical trainer from Amazon.com, that has a tiny footprint so it fits in our apartment and cost about 100 bucks. (I can’t remember what’s it’s called, but if you look up “elliptical trainer” on Amazon it’s one of the first hits.) I love it. My fiance loves it. Why? Because WE CAN WATCH STREAMING NETFLIX on it. It’s quiet enough that we can hear the programming, and there’s nothing like jogging to The X-Men tv show. I ordered a second one so we can do it together. I think that will really improve our actually-doing-it rate, which is already pretty good.

It’s no replacement for the gym–I’m a big fan of weight training, but I injure myself way too easily if I don’t have the machines to work with–but I figure it’ll keep me sane until I can stop taking night classes (about another year) and start dragging my fiance back to the gym near our house.

Note: I hate running. Elliptical trainers never give me knee injuries or ankle injuries or busted wrists from falling or shin splints or exhaust-fume-lungs. People are always telling me that running is free, but you have to get good shoes, and then I always, always end up reinjuring my knees or my old foot fracture. NO GOOD.

I should note that we can watch streaming Netflix on our TV from it. It doesn’t… it doesn’t come with Netflix.

Although that would be a hell of a selling point.

Go Ladyfingers, go! I use MyFitnessPal, it really helps track calories! It’s super easy to use, and the support there is wonderful. You can also track exercise, check it out!

Are all those things things that you can do without equipment? Because the 30 day shred sounds really great but I can’t afford equipment or fit it in our tiny tiny flat.

@Miss Parasol: I totally agree - I saw some results right off the bat simply because I was burning NO calories with my disgustingly sedentary lifestyle. But yes, things really started moving and shaking once I started… uh… moving and shaking ;)

@Miss Kid: I love Pam, too. Did you know that Tony and Shawna are living together? Gross.

@bri: I started out doing 30DS every day just because I had no other options. I got sick of this quickly and also felt likeI was working out the same areas over and over, so I switched after about 2 weeks to 30DS one day, Banish Fat the next day, etc. Then I moved onto P90X after huring my ankle, because you work a different area every day and I didn’t have to think about it - it’s all laid out for you.

@thirdtimebride: I love the dance stuff on Netflix! I feel so silly doing Fat Blasting Dance Mix but… I feel like dying afterward so I know it must be working lol

@kristophine: Awesome tips! Side note, I see a lot of research that the better your running shoes, the more you get injured - something about your body learning to rely on your shoe rather than its natural tendencies, and being more likely to twist your ankle by over pronating, etc. Just an interesting thing I’ve heard!

@MissMoscato: Thank you for mentioning this! I used MyFitnessPal for a while too. It was really great to show me that I WAS doing good, and I also bought a heart rate monitor so I could SEE that I was burning calories and that I shouldn’t give up ;)

@MsRobyn: Yes!!! All I bought was 5-pound weights for 30DS, which were like $7 at Walmart. I eventually bought 3-pounders too just for travel purposes and for moves where 5-pounds tired me out too much. I have used both of those weights consistently through P90X and now with some new videos I’m trying out, so they’re worth it.

I haven’t had to buy anything else - for P90X, the mister got a yoga mat (but we have carpet and honestly my hands slip so much on the yoga mat that I never use it) and 10 and 15-pound dumbbells, but I can barely do anything with 10 pounds anyway. Also, P90X comes with a pull-up bar, but we couldn’t install it in our rental house (not our house, plaster walls) so we modified those exercises by sitting down and leaning forward and pulling the weights down, parallel to our bodies… works the same muscles the same ways. It also comes with bands that you can use to modify certain exercises and get a bigger workout.

Anyway, that was a long answer to a short question - my financial outlay for 30DS was the cost of the DVD and a set of 5-pound weights :)
