Skincare Saviors

July 19th, 2011 @ 3:36 pm by Mrs. Macarons

My skin is generally clear, but when I’m stressed, which is exponentially more often now, acne likes to rear its ugly head. The last thing I want is a major breakout on our wedding day so it’s important to have it under control. I have fairly sensitive skin and have struggled to find products that work for me. They’re either too gentle and don’t help or they’re too strong and prevent me from using them on a regular basis. Up until a year ago I was caught in a vicious cycle of breakouts followed by sensitivity and peeling. I can finally say I have clear, healthy skin, and the following things have made a world of difference.

I know the Clarisonic gets rave reviews but it was a little too steep for my wallet.

I was also afraid it’d be a little too harsh for my sensitive skin. I opted for this Facial brush, and let me just say, I’ll never go back to washing my face without one. It’s gentle enough to use every day and does a great job exfoliating.

Mrs Buttons swore by Mario Badescu’s Drying lotion so last year I gave it a shot. I really have to thank her for introducing me to the Badescu product line because I don’t know what I’d do without it. Macs likes to tease me about my “polka dots” but it really helps dry things up without causing my skin to freak out and peel.

Blind zits are the worst. They’re painful take forever to go away. Messing with them is a BAD idea because it can lead to scaring and discoloration. Not to mention, if you’re aggressively squeezing and pushing you can damage the pore, making it even more prone to erupting again. I put a little buffering lotion on when I wake up and again in the evenings, but I top it off with their drying cream for some extra punch. In a matter of days, not weeks, they’re visibly smaller if not completely gone.

Any time my face is red and irritated, especially when I can’t stop messing with it, I bust out the healing cream. This is my hands down FAVORITE skincare product. I put it on before I go to sleep and the next morning any redness and irritation is gone. If you can’t resist the urge to pick at your skin, do yourself a favor and order this cream.

When my skin is cooperating I use this as a moisturizer. It’s absorbs beautifully and doesn’t leave my face feeling greasy. At $21, it’s a little on the expensive side, but it’s organic and a little goes a long way.

Last but not least, lots and lots of water. This might be a no brainer but I try and drink 2 liters every day, approximately four 16.9 oz bottles. I can always tell when I don’t drink enough because my foundation is more visible on my skin and my workouts are that much harder.

While I’d love to treat myself to a facial before the wedding I’m not sure it’s in the cards. So with the big day less than 2 months out (EESH!) I’ve made it a personal goal to be better about my routine.

Did you struggle getting your skin under control? What are your must-have products?

Thank you for this post! My skin drives me nuts and I have gotten to the point where I have my breakouts pretty much under control but I am freaking out about breaking out right before my wedding. I will definately try some of these products! And, I completely agree with about the water… my skin sucks if I am dehydrated. Thanks again!

@lmc183: If you have a favorite face wash just use that. I just wet the brush before giving it a little squirt cleanser.

Oooh I’ve never tried the buffering lotion - I really want to pick some of that up next time I’m at Nordy’s!

Excellent tips, Miss Mac. I have super sensitive skin but it was clear right up until the week before our engagement shoot. The stress of having nice skin totally affected me and I’ve been breaking out ever since. I’m totally going to check out that facial brush and perhaps even invest in the Mario Badescu line—I need some miracle work right now. Thanks again for the great skincare advice, lady ;)

My skin has been kind of awful lately, mostly due to lack of sleep and drinking more tea/soda than I should and not enough water. I’ve never heard of the Mario Badescu line, but I’m intrigued and might need to pick some up now!

@Miss Seal: Their products are more expensive than your drug store variety but they last for quite some time. If you’re curious I think you can fill out a skin questionnaire on their website and they’ll send you some free samples of what they recommend for your skin type.
@Miss Pony: I don’t mean to come across as a brand ambassador but I really really like all their stuff. Every time I place an order I choose 3 new free samples to try and almost every time I become hooked on something else.

I just went on and bought their starter kit. Thanks for the recommendation. I will give you one of my own: I bought Olay’s new version of the Clarisonic (Pro-X brush) and I love it! I don’t know how clarisonic is better but its worth saving the $170 to try this one instead :)

I am totally in love with LUSH products! I have never tried anything that lived up to it’s reputation better than their skincare/haircare/bodycare products! They use all organic ingredients and have totally fun names! They also send you free samples of new stuff! The best four or five dollars you can ever spend for your skin is the sugar baby sugar scrub!

The Mario Badescu healing cream intrigues me–I’m terrible at leaving my skin alone once it becomes irritated!

I have incredibly sensitive skin (like, mystery to doctors sensitive–I’ve been to docs about it on and off since I was 14 and nothing they did helped), and a few years ago I just stopped using anything on it. I get in the shower, I get my face wet, but other than that, I generally leave it alone, with the exception of Aveeno moisturizer with menthol (it helps the itchies from my eczema). No makeup (it all makes me itch, and I mean ALL, right up through “hypoallergenic” options and lines), no cleanser, no scrub, no nothin’.

My skin does better now than it’s ever done before. It would be even better if I didn’t touch my face compulsively, but that’s what being OCD does to me. I pick my face and I pull my hair out. It’s awesome.

The one thing that does make a big difference for me is taking my vitamins. My diet would make nutritionists cry, so I take a multivitamin on a fairly regular basis. I get the deep zits (on my neck, of all places) if I stop.

I love my Clarisonic. They have a sensitive skin brush head which I use, although my skin is too sensitive. It exfoliates my skin so well. When I first started using it, I did go through a phase of purging; so it will take a bit to get really clear skin.
