About Mrs. Cannon

The Taming of the Boobs

July 19th, 2011 @ 8:40 am by Mrs. Cannon

I’ve posted a few pictures of myself here, so you may have noticed something about me. In case you haven’t, I will post this um, over-exposed picture from Mother’s Day to make it clear what I’m talking about:

The Taming of the Boobs : wedding toledo undergarments 0271

I am, to use the medical term, emboobulated in the chestal region. As this picture illustrates, if my bra is not doing its job properly, and I have made the ill-advised decision to wear a low-cut shirt, it gets, as scientists say, totes ridonkulous. Of course Mr. Cannon just decided to take this completely over the top (ha, see what I did there?) picture without warning me about my problem. Men! *eye roll*

This is highly relevant to my wedding because I have to maintain a tasteful level of mammary exposure during the event known as “church cleavage.”

I do not want to be one of those brides who looks like they dressed for the wedding night during the ceremony. You know the pictures I’m thinking of. And that episode of Say Yes to the Dress. But I’m too nice to post any direct references to those ladies, so let’s just all give each other a knowing nod, okay? Okay.

Now I’ve yet to expose you all to my final dress, but my pictures of the work-in-progress have shown you that it’s a halter dress. I think this is a beautiful look. I’m happy with the halter top—except that a lady in my condition has a heck of a time trying to find a bra that fits period, let alone a strapless bra. But I did it! And I want to share my adventures with you all because it wasn’t easy and fun, and if I can help even one other large-chested lady, I will be thrilled.

First, because I’m sure some of you will be curious, I will tell you I am a 34J. I began buying all my bras online about four years ago. My usual bra shopping hang-out is barenecessities.com. Through them, I have found bras in my size that are actually pretty. They also helped me find maternity and nursing bras in my size when I went through all that fun with Cherry Bomb. And after we were finally done nursing, I found my tried and true favorite everyday bras on their website. But, when I started searching for a strapless, I wasn’t able to find anything I liked or that would possibly fit there.

After some browsing around, I found herroom.com. I was very pleased with what I found, but it took several tries to find what I needed. First, I sent for the Goddess Marilyn Strapless Bra Style 6120 in 36H. I know what you’re thinking- “Didn’t she just say she’s a 34J?” Yes, but I was doing some magical thinking, and really hoping that the bra would work. H was the biggest size they had, so I kind of shrugged my shoulders and crossed my fingers. In surprise to no one, least of all me, this bra did not fit. At all. It was comical how small this bra appeared. Mr. Cannon had a good laugh at my pathetic attempts to make it work, and so I packed it up and sent it back to exchange it for an elomi Molded Underwire Foam Molded Strapless Bra in 36GG. It said it was in UK sizing, so I used the handy converter chart and figured my 34J would probably work out as a 34GG. I went to a 36GG because strapless bras are usually pretty tight and I thought the 34 might crush my ribs a bit too much.

Then I waited and waited for my exchange to come in. And it was taking forever. So I ordered a different bra to see if it would work in the meantime. I ordered a Va Bien Ultra Lift Convertible Bra 1506 in 34I. It came in a few days later. I tried it on, and it kind of worked. It wasn’t a perfect fit, but it would work. I was kind of OK  with the imperfect fit, because I really didn’t think I was going to do any better. A few days after that, I got a call from HerRoom telling me they had received my exchange and were requesting permission to charge my card for the difference between the bra I returned and the bra I requested. I thought for a moment about not getting the bra I had originally exchanged since I had my kind of fitting Va Bien, but then I thought better of it and authorized the charge.

Today, the elomi came in and IT FIT! It’s not a dream perfect fit, but it’s a good fit. Far better than I had ever imagined. I am thrilled with this bra! I have never seen a strapless this large work this well. It’s truly a great bra, and I am so happy that I won’t have to worry about my undergarments on my wedding day.

I highly recommend HerRoom to those of you out there looking for quality items in a larger size. I was really starting to believe I wouldn’t find anything to wear with my dress, and since going bra-less is not an option at my size, I was freaking out a bit. Although it took quite awhile for my exchange to go through, my original orders were always filled promptly at HerRoom, and I really appreciate that they called to get authorization to charge my card for the exchange. I know it seems obvious that they would do that, but many places don’t.

All in all, I had a positive experience and highly recommend all the bras I mentioned in this post, depending on your cup size. They were all supportive and well-made, and even though they didn’t all work for my situation, they might work for you. And over all, if you’re looking for a large cup size, give HerRoom a shot. I had a mostly happy experience aside from the long exchange time.

Did any of you have a long adventure in undergarment searching? Any lingerie shops for the “gifted” that I should know about? I still need to pick up some honeymoon lingerie, so if you have any good suggestions, don’t keep them to yourself!

While mine are hardly as big, I did have some trouble! Im a 34 D or a 32 DD and after having my daughter…they’ve lost their shape…like completely:( so strapless bra hunting was a depressing experience….until I went to a specialty shop here where I live and the woman completely understood and fit me for a bustier and I was so grateful, I wanted to hug her. Soooo my advice? Look in your area to see if there are any bra specialty shops! The one in north DE is called Bare Essentials and honestly I couldnt recommend them more, and no I dont work for them, they are just great at what they do.

Yum, Handel’s! (I’m from the Toledo area too)

If you want to look somewhere where you can see the bras in real life, Renee’s Survivor Shop on Secor carries an extensive selection (all the way up to 40M, I think). They mainly do cancer-related sales and items, but they also do a lot of sales in hard to find bra sizes. You’ll get fitted by a professional (much better than a department store fitter!) who can check to see who different things are fitting you and will work to find the bet fit and style.

I couldn’t help but notice that in your picture you are sitting on a HANDEL’S bench eating HANDEL’S ICECREAM! As a southern transplant, that is a sight (and a taste!) I miss… best icecream ever! I got so excited about it that I had to comment :)

I hardly stack up to you (jk) but fall outside of normally available sizes; thanks for sharing.

I just watched the video on the Her Room website, do you have the “Get the Ring” bra?

I too have issues fitting the girls properly. I went in for a fitting at an Intimacy boutique and now that I know my size (in UK sizing) I order all of mine from figleaves.com. It’s so nice to have them fit properly!

This was so helpful for me. I have a big cup and small back 32-34 H-JJ depending on where I shop but I have never been able to find a decent strapless bra.

I’m tempted to order the va bien because that comes in my size but not sure as I’m trying to lose weight and what if I go down a size???

I’m waffling now lol, thanks for the tip!

Completely and totally understand the pain. Birth Control took me from a 30-32 F to a 30-32 H-GG. Neither are terribly easy to find (I can’t imagine how hard it would be for a J). For a perfect fit bra I’ve taken to driving 2 hours from my parent’s house (which is 24 hours from my apartment) to Baltimore and going to place with an in house seamstress.
But Bravissimo in the UK has a great online selection, not as much as figleaves or herroom but nice. They also have a clothing line designed for different levels of “fullness”

THANK YOU!!!
I’m 34H and I completely understand the struggle to find a good fitted bra. I just went onto HerRoom and I am blown away by the amount and styles of bras. So again thank you for introducing to this site.

THANK YOU SO. SOooo very much!

My 17-year-old daughter is 5′, and a 34DDD and we struggle to find anything to fit her. (she calls them her, “Blessings”) Much appreciated; we will check out that site!

I’m a 34D, but a largeish D. That might not be my real size, but it works most of the time. I like to refer to my boob issues as “rich people problems”.

Glad it worked out for you and the girls. Haha.

While I haven’t began the undergarment search yet, I’m totally loving your scientific terms and love that you used totes ridonkulous, awesome! And yay for finding undergarments that work for you!!

Congrats on finding a strapless that works! This small-chested person just wanted to pop in and say that I bought a strapless bar (didn’t end up needing it for the wedding) and I wore it the other day under a t-shirt with a really wide neckline, and it spent most of the day around my belly button. I’M A 34A. What gives, Victoria’s Secret? This bra was recommended to me for my wedding! So glad I didn’t end up needing it.

I have the world’s tiniest ribcage so I’m not wearing one at all. The dress shop is fitting my gown with cups and it actually holds me up quite well. I’m a 27 inch ribcage and a 28D/28DD but even if you’re a DD at 28 inches, the actual boobs aren’t that large (just in relation!) so they’re fine for sewn in support. So glad you found one that supports the “ladies!”

Haha this is a wondeful post! I’m not exactly a 34J but I feel the pain of the large chested brethren. True story: I was a 36C, then I lost weight and now I’m a 34D. How? I don’t know. The bra shop lady explained it to me – something about how when you lose a band size you typically go up a cup size because of your posture or something, but all I know is Cs no longer fit, and Ds do. *shrug*

Anyway, I’m having cups sewn into my dress, which has a corset to begin with – but I just wanted to say that I totally also cannot find pretty bras that come in my size. What’s up with that?

THANK YOU! As a 32F I am super concerned about the church cleavage. Also, I fell in love with my dress and bought it rather hastily and figured I would just get the ladies under control somehow. Thanks for two new stores to check out. I was hesitant to buy online, but with little to no specialty bra shops in my city, I may just venture into the online shopping world. Thanks for sharing your success story. Gives me confidence to try!
